ENIGMA and global neuroscience: A decade of large-scale studies of the brain in health and disease across more than 40 countries
This review summarizes the last decade of work by the ENIGMA (Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Consortium, a global alliance of over 1400 scientists across 43 countries, studying the human brain in health and disease. Building on large-scale genetic studies that discovered the first robustly replicated genetic loci associated with brain metrics, ENIGMA has diversified into over 50 working groups (WGs), pooling worldwide data and expertise to answer fundamental questions in neuroscience, psychiatry, neurology, and genetics. Most ENIGMA WGs focus on specific psychiatric and neurological conditions, other WGs study normal variation due to sex and gender differences, or development and aging; still other WGs develop methodological pipelines and tools to facilitate harmonized analyses of "big data" (i.e., genetic and epigenetic data, multimodal MRI, and electroencephalography data). These international efforts have yielded the largest neuroimaging studies to date in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. More recent ENIGMA WGs have formed to study anxiety disorders, suicidal thoughts and behavior, sleep and insomnia, eating disorders, irritability, brain injury, antisocial personality and conduct disorder, and dissociative identity disorder. Here, we summarize the first decade of ENIGMA's activities and ongoing projects, and describe the successes and challenges encountered along the way. We highlight the advantages of collaborative large-scale coordinated data analyses for testing reproducibility and robustness of findings, offering the opportunity to identify brain systems involved in clinical syndromes across diverse samples and associated genetic, environmental, demographic, cognitive, and psychosocial factors
Nonlinear stability of a delayed feedback controlled container crane
A simplified model of a container crane subject to a delayed feedback is investigated. The conditions for a Hopf bifurcation to stable/unstable limit-cycle solutions are determined. It is shown that a subcritical Hopf bifurcation to unstable oscillations cannot be ruled out and the undesired coexistence of stable large amplitude oscillations and a stable equilibrium endangers the robustness of time-delay control strategies. Identification of yeast population dynamics of spontaneous fermentation in Beijing wine region, China
The aim of this study was (i) to investigate changes occurring in the yeast population profile during spontaneous fermentation of grape juice; (ii) to assess the proliferation of commercial yeast starter culture strains in vineyards; and (iii) to identify indigenous wine strains for future development of starter strains that better reflect the yeast biodiversity of China’s grape-growing regions. To achieve this, yeasts were isolated at four different stages during fermentation of both hand-pressed and winery-sourced must samples of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Roussanne and Merlot. A total of 1600 yeast colonies were isolated and then grouped according to macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. A selection of 291 colonies from the different groups was subjected to species identification using the internal transcribed spacer regions of the 5.8S rRNA gene (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region) and the inter-delta () sequence of the 26S rRNA D1/D2 region. In addition, 104 Saccharomyces cerevisiae colonies were subjected to strain identification. Twelve species belonging to nine different genera were found amongst the isolates. During the early stages of fermentation, it was found that Hanseniaspora uvarum and Candida stellata numerically dominated the four to six yeast species present, including a region-specific yeast, Sporobolomyces beijingensis. Two S. cerevisiae strains were isolated from the final stage of fermentation. These two indigenous strains, which were found to be different from the nine commercial yeast strains previously used as starter cultures in this particular Beijing-based winery, might possess potentially important region-specific oenological characteristics. Antimicrobial resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii to imipenem in Iran: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Imipenem-resistant multi-drug resistant (IR-MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii has been emerged as a morbidity successful nosocomial pathogen throughout the world.To address imipenem being yet the most effective antimicrobial agent against A. baumannii to control outbreaks and treat patients, a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the prevalence of IR-MDR A. baumannii. We systematically searched Web of Science, PubMed, MEDLINE, Science Direct, EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and Iranian databases to identify studies addressing the antibiotic resistance of A. baumannii to imipenem and the frequency of MDR strains in Iran. Out of 58 articles and after a secondary screening using inclusion and exclusion criteria and on the basis of title and abstract evaluation, 51 studies were selected for analysis. The meta-analysis revealed that 55% [95% confidence interval (CI), 53.0–56.5] of A. baumannii were resistant to imipenem and 74% (95% CI, 61.3–83.9) were MDR. The MDR A. baumannii population in Iran is rapidly changing toward a growing resistance to imipenem. Our findings highlight the critical need for a comprehensive monitoring and infection control policy as well as a national susceptibility review program that evaluates IR-MDR A. baumannii isolates from various parts of Iran
