    The adverse effects of albendazole and praziquantel in mass drug administration by trained schoolteachers

    Eastern and Southern Africa Centre of International Parasite Control (ESACIPAC) conducted stool examinations for soil transmitted helminthiases (STH) and Schistosoma mansoni, among school children in Mwea Division, Central Kenya where both infections are endemic. Mass drug administrations (MDAs) were then conducted in 2004 and 2005 using schoolteachers trained on how to administer treatment, physically and psychologically prepare the children to take the medication, have them eat before treatment, handle minor and refer serious side effects to local health facilities. Local health workers were on standby to help manage severe side effects. This study examined side effects of the drugs and the teachers’ preparedness to handle the children when such effects occurred. No serious side effects requiring referral to the health centre occurred and the minor ones observed were temporal. In 2005 children in Mwea schools were treated with albendazole 400mg and praziquantel 40mg/kg body weight while those of Ndia, a neighboring division treated with only albendazole 400mg since there was low S.mansoni prevalence. Monitoring of side effects was done in two schools of Ndia and in three of Mwea through a questionnaire distributed to grade three pupils a week after treatment. Of 73 pupils from Mwea, 49.7% reported incidences of stomachache, vomiting/nausea, headache and dizziness whereas 39.2% of 186 from Ndia experienced incidences of cough, stomachache and headache. This shows that more pupils from Mwea, (albendazole and praziquantel) than from Ndia (albendazole alone) experienced minor side effects. These results show that both drugs have temporary, minor side effects, which can be managed by trained schoolteachers by ensuring that the school children do not swallow the drugs on an empty stomach and rest immediately after swallowing the drugs but should be closely monitored by health personnel. In this study, one trained schoolteacher could administer treatment to three hundred children in one day, which makes the approach cost effective and should be adopted nationally.Keywords: albendazole, praziquantel, soil transmitted helminthiasis, schistosomiasi

    Trends in incidence and mortality of tuberculosis in Japan : a population-based study, 1997–2016

    Japan is still a medium-burden tuberculosis (TB) country. We aimed to examine trends in newly notified active TB incidence and TB-related mortality in the last two decades in Japan. This is a population-based study using Japanese Vital Statistics and Japan Tuberculosis Surveillance from 1997 to 2016. We determined active TB incidence and mortality rates (per 100 000 population) by sex, age and disease categories. Joinpoint regression was applied to calculate the annual percentage change (APC) in age-adjusted mortality rates and to identify the years showing significant trend changes. Crude and age-adjusted incidence rates reduced from 33.9 to 13.9 and 37.3 to 11.3 per 100 000 population, respectively. Also, crude and age-adjusted mortality rates reduced from 2.2 to 1.5 and 2.8 to 1.0 per 100 000 population, respectively. Average APC in the incidence and mortality rates showed significant decline both in men (−6.2% and −5.4%, respectively) and women (−5.7% and −4.6%, respectively). Age-specific analysis demonstrated decreases in incidence and mortality rates for every age category, except for the incidence trend in the younger population. Although trends in active TB incidence and mortality rates in Japan have favourably decreased, the rate of decline is far from achieving TB elimination by 2035

    Direct Imaging of Fine Structures in Giant Planet Forming Regions of the Protoplanetary Disk around AB Aurigae

    We report high-resolution 1.6 \micron polarized intensity (PIPI) images of the circumstellar disk around the Herbig Ae star AB Aur at a radial distance of 22 AU (0."150."15) up to 554 AU (3.""85), which have been obtained by the high-contrast instrument HiCIAO with the dual-beam polarimetry. We revealed complicated and asymmetrical structures in the inner part (≲\lesssim140 AU) of the disk, while confirming the previously reported outer (rr ≳\gtrsim200 AU) spiral structure. We have imaged a double ring structure at ∼\sim40 and ∼\sim100 AU and a ring-like gap between the two. We found a significant discrepancy of inclination angles between two rings, which may indicate that the disk of AB Aur is warped. Furthermore, we found seven dips (the typical size is ∼\sim45 AU or less) within two rings as well as three prominent PIPI peaks at ∼\sim40 AU. The observed structures, including a bumpy double ring, a ring-like gap, and a warped disk in the innermost regions, provide essential information for understanding the formation mechanism of recently detected wide-orbit (rr >>20 AU) planets.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    The DEAR experiment on DAΦNE

    DEAR is one of the first experiments at the new DAΦNE Ø-factory at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati dell'INFN. The objective of the DEAR experiment is to perform a precision measurement of the strong interaction shifts and widths of the K-series lines in kaonic hydrogen and the first observation of the same quantities in kaonic deuterium. The aim is to obtain a precise determination of the isospin-dependent kaon-nucleon scattering lengths which will represent a breakthrough in KN low-energy phenomenology and will allow us to determine the kaon-nucleon sigma terms. The sigma terms give a direct measurement of chiral symmetry breaking and are connected to the strangeness content of the proton. First results on background measurements with the DEAR NTP setup installed on DAΦNE are reported

    The Structure of Pre-transitional Protoplanetary Disks I: Radiative Transfer Modeling of the Disk+Cavity in the PDS 70 system

    Through detailed radiative transfer modeling, we present a disk+cavity model to simultaneously explain both the SED and Subaru H-band polarized light imaging for the pre-transitional protoplanetary disk PDS 70. Particularly, we are able to match not only the radial dependence, but also the absolute scale, of the surface brightness of the scattered light. Our disk model has a cavity 65 AU in radius, which is heavily depleted of sub-micron-sized dust grains, and a small residual inner disk which produces a weak but still optically thick NIR excess in the SED. To explain the contrast of the cavity edge in the Subaru image, a factor of ~1000 depletion for the sub-micron-sized dust inside the cavity is required. The total dust mass of the disk may be on the order of 1e-4 M_sun, only weakly constrained due to the lack of long wavelength observations and the uncertainties in the dust model. The scale height of the sub-micron-sized dust is ~6 AU at the cavity edge, and the cavity wall is optically thick in the vertical direction at H-band. PDS 70 is not a member of the class of (pre-)transitional disks identified by Dong et al. (2012), whose members only show evidence of the cavity in the millimeter-sized dust but not the sub-micron-sized dust in resolved images. The two classes of (pre-)transitional disks may form through different mechanisms, or they may just be at different evolution stages in the disk clearing process.Comment: 28 pages (single column), 7 figures, 1 table, ApJ accepte
