Symmetry reduction in multiband Hamiltonians for semiconductor quantum dots: The role of interfaces and higher energy bands
The role of interfaces and higher bands on the electronic structure of embedded semiconductor
quantum dots (QDs) was investigated. The term in the multiband kïżœp Hamiltonian that captures the
effect of interface band mixing was derived starting from the microscopic theory. It was shown,
analytically and numerically, that, with such a term included, the right symmetry of the QD system
can be captured. It leads to splitting of otherwise degenerate energy levels of the order of several
meV. The inclusion of additional higher bands beyond the ones from the standard eight-band model
also leads to the reduction of symmetry from an artificially high one to the true atomistic symmetry
of the system, however their quantitative effect is weaker. These results prove that the multiband
k.p Hamiltonians are fully capable of describing the correct symmetry of a QD
Western Balkan security and the European Union: taming securitization on the fringe of Europe
The paper investigates the patterns of securitization within and from the perspective of the Western Balkan countries, in the light of the external influences on the regional security. The ongoing migrant/refugee crisis, particularly at its peak during 2015 and 2016, is analyzed as an indicative case of the multilevel context for the dominant political discourse in the region. The countries most directly involved in the âBalkan routeâ provided responses that differed in the extent of (de)securitization. The governments were exposed to incentives and pressures from different levels. Within this analytical framework, the argument proceeds in three stages. First, security studies and the securitization theory are assessed in the light of their embeddedness in the Western context and applicability in different political and social environments. Second, the attempt is made to classify the specificities of the Western Balkan region with reference to the concept of securitization â cultural, (geo)political and economic context, as well as the underlying socio-political processes that carry the transformation of the regionâs societies. The third part brings the overview of the context in which the migrant/refugee crisis has reached its peak, in 2015 and 2016. The crisisâ uniqueness and historically unprecedented nature pushed the challenge beyond the traditionally expected regional threats, such as the inter-ethnic conflict, power projections, or imminent economic crises. This, in turn, opened new possibilities for the external impact. Accordingly, the key argument is that the Western Balkan governmentsâ discourse and the approach to security were convergent with the stances taken by the EU, which eventually provided crucial incentives for political cooperation. The article concludes by proposing four sets of research caveats for the securitization studies in the Western Balkans â pertaining respectively to the regionâs socio-political, geopolitical and the international-political characteristics
Linearization of multichannel amplifiers with the injection of second harmonics into the amplifier and predistortion circuit
A linearization technique that uses the injection of the fundamental signal second harmonics together with the fundamental signals at the amplifier input has been extended in this paper by introducing the injection the second harmonics into nonlinear microwave amplifier and so-called predistortion circuit. Predistortion circuit produces the third-order intermodulation signals that are injected at the amplifier input together with the second harmonics making the linearization procedure more independent on the phase variation of the second harmonics. In addition, a considerably better improvement is attained for the power of fundamental signals close to 1-dB compression point by applying the linearization technique proposed in this paper in comparison to the linearization with the injection of the second harmonics merely in the nonlinear amplifier
Dramatic Changes in the Electronic Structure Upon Transition to the Collapsed Tetragonal Phase in CaFe2As2
We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density
functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the electronic structure of
CaFeAs in previously unexplored collapsed tetragonal (CT) phase. This
unusual phase of the iron arsenic high temperature superconductors was hard to
measure as it exists only under pressure. By inducing internal strain, via the
post growth, thermal treatment of the single crystals, we were able to
stabilize the CT phase at ambient-pressure. We find significant differences in
the Fermi surface topology and band dispersion data from the more common
orthorhombic-antiferromagnetic or tetragonal-paramagnetic phases, consistent
with electronic structure calculations. The top of the hole bands sinks below
the Fermi level, which destroys the nesting present in parent phases. The
absence of nesting in this phase along with apparent loss of Fe magnetic
moment, are now clearly experimentally correlated with the lack of

SO(4) Theory of Competition between Triplet Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism in Bechgaard Salts
Motivated by recent experiments with Bechgaard salts, we investigate the
competition between antiferromagnetism and triplet superconductivity in quasi
one-dimensional electron systems. We unify the two orders in an SO(4) symmetric
framework, and demonstrate the existence of such symmetry in one-dimensional
Luttinger liquids. SO(4) symmetry, which strongly constrains the phase diagram,
can explain coexistence regions between antiferromagnetic, superconducting, and
normal phases, as observed in (TMTSF)PF. We predict a sharp neutron

Safety and Pharmacokinetics of a Four Monoclonal Antibody Combination Against Botulinum C and D Neurotoxins.
Botulism is caused by botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), the most poisonous substance known. BoNTs are also classified as Tier 1 biothreat agents due to their high potency and lethality. The existence of seven BoNT serotypes (A-G), which differ between 35% to 68% in amino acid sequence, necessitates the development of serotype specific countermeasures. We present results of a Phase 1 clinical study of an anti-toxin to BoNT serotypes C and D, NTM-1634, which consists of an equimolar mixture of four fully human IgG1 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), each binding to non-overlapping epitopes on BoNT serotypes C and D resulting in potent toxin neutralization in rodents. This first-in-human study evaluated the safety and pharmacokinetics of escalating doses of NTM-1634 administered intravenously to healthy adults (NCT03046550). Three cohorts of eight healthy subjects received a single intravenous dose of NTM-1634 or placebo at 0.33 mg/kg, 0.66 mg/kg or 1 mg/kg. Follow-up examinations and pharmacokinetic evaluations were continued up to 121 days post-infusion. Subjects were monitored using physical examinations, hematology and chemistry blood tests, and electrocardiograms. Pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated using noncompartmental methods. The results demonstrated that the materials were safe and well-tolerated with the expected half-lives for human mAbs and with minimal anti-drug antibodies detected over the dose ranges and duration of the study
Cultural relativism and the discourse of intercultural communication: aporias of praxis in the intercultural public sphere
The premise of much intercultural communication pedagogy and research is to educate people from different cultures towards open and transformative positions of mutual understanding and respect. This discourse in the instance of its articulation realises and sustains Intercultural Communication epistemologically â as an academic field of social enquiry, and judgementally â as one which locates itself on a moral terrain. By adopting an ethical stance towards difference, the discourse of intercultural communication finds itself caught in a series of aporias, or performative contradictions, where interculturalists are projected simultaneously into positions of cultural relativism on the one hand and ideological totalism on the other. Such aporias arise because the theoretical premises upon which the discourse relies are problematic. We trace these thematics to a politics of presence operating within the discourse of intercultural communication and links this to questions of judgement and truth in the intercultural public sphere. We propose that the politics of presence be set aside in favour of an intercultural praxis which is oriented to responsibility rather than to truth
Efficacy of λ-cyhalothrin, amitraz, and phoxim against the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae De Geer, 1778 (Mesostigmata: Dermanyssidae): an eight-year survey
Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778) is a major problem for the poultry industry worldwide, as it negatively affects virtually all kinds of rearing systems. Therefore, the control of infestation has become a routine process, and its economic cost is constantly increasing. Until now, most of the control strategies have relied on the use of synthetic chemical drugs, but their efficacy is often questioned by the emergence and diffusion of resistant mite populations. With this in mind, the efficacy of λ-cyhalothrin, amitraz, and phoxim has been verified by testing them against 86 mite populations collected from the same number of poultry farms in Italy from 2008 to 2015. Assays were performed according to the filter paper method using the recommended, half, quarter, double and quadruple doses. The results showed that phoxim and amitraz were the most effective acaricides (median efficacies 80.35% and 80.83%, respectively), but amitraz exhibited a sharp fall in its efficacy during 2011 and 2012, while phoxim maintained its high effectiveness up to 2015, when it dropped. The overall median efficacy of λ-cyhalothrin was 58.33%. The data also highlighted the importance of the use of the right concentration, as an increase in dosage was not always useful against resistant populations, while its reduction also diminished efficacy, simultaneously increasing the risk for the development of resistance

Negative response elements in keratin genes mediate transcriptional repression and the cross-talk among nuclear receptors
Very little is known about the mechanisms responsible for the findings that binding of nuclear receptors (NR) to some promoter elements leads to transcriptional activation, whereas binding to others leads to repression. Case in point is the group of epidermal keratin genes and their DNA sequences responsible for repression by NR. Keratin response elements (KREs) interact with receptors for retinoic acid, thyroid hormone, and glucocorticoids. KREs, by their structure and sequence, direct the binding of retinoic acid and thyroid hormone as homodimers and glucocorticoids as monomers. Such specific DNA-receptor interactions are crucial for the repression signal of transcription. In this paper we have analyzed the interactions between the KREs and NR that lead to such repression. We have found that KREs are promoter-independent. They not only provide a docking platform for the receptors, but also play a key role in directing the receptors to bind into particular configurations and coordinating the interactions among different receptors. Both an intact KRE and an intact receptor DNA-binding domain are necessary for the regulation to occur, which emphasizes the importance of interaction between the DNA and NR. for proper signaling. Furthermore, KREs allow simultaneous binding of multiple receptors, thus providing fine-tuning of transcriptional regulation. The DNA/DNA-binding domain interactions in keratin promoters exemplify tissue and gene specificity of hormone action
