    Random local strain effects in homovalent-substituted relaxor ferroelectrics: a first-principles study of BaTi0.74Zr0.26O3

    We present first-principles supercell calculations on BaTi0.74Zr0.26O3, a prototype material for relaxors with a homovalent substitution. From a statistical analysis of relaxed structures, we give evidence for four types of Ti-atom polar displacements: along the , , or directions of the cubic unit cell, or almost cancelled. The type of a Ti displacement is entirely determined by the Ti/Zr distribution in the adjacent unit cells. The underlying mechanism involves local strain effects that ensue from the difference in size between the Ti4+ and Zr4+ cations. These results shed light on the structural mechanisms that lead to disordered Ti displacements in BaTi(1-x)Zr(x)O3 relaxors, and probably in other BaTiO3-based relaxors with homovalent substitution.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Acoustic characterization of atmospheric-pressure dielectric barrier discharge plasma jets

    In this work, we report the acoustic measurements performed on an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet (APPJ) ignited at various electrical conditions, and attempt to describe the origin of plasma-generated sound waves. The working principle of the APPJ source used for this investigation was based on a DC- pulsed dielectric barrier discharge in a helium flow. Our results indicated that the sound is generated in the plasma core in a glass tube between two cylindrical electrodes, rather than in the plasma jet that extends into the open atmosphere. We also explored the electrical conditions at which the sound level is below 85 dBA; that is, still within the safe level recommended by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Therefore, our findings can be used to advance our basic and applicable knowledge of APPJs

    Giant Electroresistance in Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions

    The interplay between the electron transport in metal/ferroelectric/metal junctions with ultrathin ferroelectric barriers and the polarization state of a barrier is investigated. Using a model which takes into account screening of polarization charges in metallic electrodes and direct quantum tunneling across a ferroelectric barrier we calculate the change in the tunneling conductance associated with the polarization switching. We find the conductance change of a few orders of magnitude for metallic electrodes with significantly different screening lengths. This giant electroresistance effect is the consequence of a different potential profile seen by transport electrons for the two opposite polarization orientations.Comment: 4 page

    Sparse Equalizers for OFDM Signals with Insufficient Cyclic Prefix

    The cyclic prefix (CP) is appended in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals to combat inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) induced by the communication channel, which limits its spectral efficiency. Therefore, inserting an insufficient CP and equalizing the resulting ICI and ISI is a method that has been circulating the literature for a while, aiming at increasing the efficiency of OFDM systems. In this paper, we propose a reduced-complexity sparse linear equalizer and a decision-feedback equalizer for OFDM signals with insufficient CP. A performance-complexity trade-off is highlighted, where we show that it is possible to equalize the received signal with a reduced complexity equalizer while having a limited performance loss. Our proposed equalizer designs are not only less complex to realize, but are shown to provide a higher data rate. The proposed equalizers are further evaluated in terms of the worst-case coherence, a metric determining the effectiveness of our used approach.     Characterization and Weathering of the Building Materials of Sanctuaries in the Archaeological Site of Dion, Greece

    The sanctuaries of Demeter and Asklepios are part of the Dion archaeological site that sits among the eastern foothills of Mount Olympus. The main building materials are limestones and conglomerates. Sandstones, marbles, and ceramic plinths were also used. The materials consist mainly of calcite and/or dolomite, whereas the deteriorated surfaces contain also secondary and recrystallized calcite and dolomite, gypsum, various inorganic compounds, fluoroapatite, microorganisms and other organic compounds. Cracks and holes were observed in various parts of the stones. The influence of specific weathering agents and factors to the behavior of the materials was examined. The particular environmental conditions in Dion combine increased moisture and rain fall, insolation and great temperature differences, abundance of intensive surface and underground water bodies in the surrounding area, an area full of plants and trees, therefore, they can cause extensive chemical, biological and mechanical decay of the monuments. The following physical characteristics of the building materials have been studied: bulk density, open porosity, pore size distribution, water absorption and desorption, capillary absorption and desorption. The chemical composition of bulk precipitation, surface and underground water was investigated. The salts presence and crystallization was examined. The influence of the water presence to the behavior of the materials was examined by in situ IR thermometer measurements. Temperature values increased from the lower to the upper parts of the building stones and they significantly depend on the orientation of the walls. The results indicate the existence of water in the bulk of the materials due to capillary penetration. The existence of water in the bulk of the materials due to capillary penetration, the cycles of wet-dry conditions, correlated with the intensive surface and underground water presence in the whole surrounding area, lead to partial dissolution-recrystallization of the carbonate material and loss of the structural cohesion and the surface stability

    Nurse-led interventions among older adults affected by cancer: an integrative review.

    Aging can introduce significant changes in health, cognition, function, social, and emotional status among older adults affected by cancer. Little is known about how existing nurse-led interventions address the needs of older adults. The objective was to identify existing nurse-led interventions among older adults to optimize recovery and survivorship needs. A integrative systematic review was reported conducted according to the PRISMA 2020 Guidelines. Electronic databases (APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases) were searched using key search terms. Articles were assessed for inclusion according to a pre-determined eligibility criterion. Data extraction and quality appraisal were conducted. Findings were integrated in a narrative synthesis. 21 studies were included and a total of 4,253 participants represented. There were a range of study designs: quantitative (n=10), randomised controlled trials (n=6), mixed methods studies (n=3), qualitative (n=1) and a non-randomised controlled study (n=1). Most participants had prostate cancer with some representation in colorectal, lung, head and neck, renal, oesophageal, and mixed cancer patient populations. This review shows a lack of evidence on the inclusion of geriatric assessments for older people with cancer within existing nurse-led interventions. Further research is needed to test nurse-led interventions with the inclusion of geriatric assessments, and their contribution in the multidisciplinary team across the cancer care continuum for various cancer patient populations

    Nanocapsules of ZnO Nanorods and Geraniol as a Novel Mean for the Effective Control of Botrytis cinerea in Tomato and Cucumber Plants

    Inorganic-based nanoparticle formulations of bioactive compounds are a promising nanoscale application that allow agrochemicals to be entrapped and/or encapsulated, enabling gradual and targeted delivery of their active ingredients. In this context, hydrophobic ZnO@OAm nanorods (NRs) were firstly synthesized and characterized via physicochemical techniques and then encapsulated within the biodegradable and biocompatible sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), either separately (ZnO NCs) or in combination with geraniol in the effective ratios of 1:1 (ZnOGer1 NCs), 1:2 (ZnOGer2 NCs), and 1:3 (ZnOGer2 NCs), respectively. The mean hydrodynamic size, polydispersity index (PDI), and ζ-potential of the nanocapsules were determined at different pH values. The efficiency of encapsulation (EE, %) and loading capacity (LC, %) of NCs were also determined. Pharmacokinetics of ZnOGer1 NCs and ZnOGer2 NCs showed a sustainable release profile of geraniol over 96 h and a higher stability at 25 ± 0.5 °C rather than at 35 ± 0.5 °C. ZnOGer1 NCs, ZnOGer2 NCs and ZnO NCs were evaluated in vitro against B. cinerea, and EC50 values were calculated at 176 μg/mL, 150 μg/mL, and > 500 μg/mL, respectively. Subsequently, ZnOGer1 NCs and ZnOGer2 NCs were tested by foliar application on B. cinerea-inoculated tomato and cucumber plants, showing a significant reduction of disease severity. The foliar application of both NCs resulted in more effective inhibition of the pathogen in the infected cucumber plants as compared to the treatment with the chemical fungicide Luna Sensation SC. In contrast, tomato plants treated with ZnOGer2 NCs demonstrated a better inhibition of the disease as compared to the treatment with ZnOGer1 NCs and Luna. None of the treatments caused phytotoxic effects. These results support the potential for the use of the specific NCs as plant protection agents against B. cinerea in agriculture as an effective alternative to synthetic fungicides

    Territorial Tactics: The Socio-spatial Significance of Private Policing Strategies in Cape Town

    This paper analyses the policing strategies of private security companies operating in urban space. An existing literature has considered the variety of ways that territory becomes of fundamental importance in the work of public police forces. However, this paper examines territory in the context of private security companies. Drawing on empirical research in Cape Town, it examines how demarcated territories become key subjects in private policing. Private security companies are responsible for a relatively small section of the city, while in contrast the public police ultimately have to see city space as a whole. Hence, private policing strategy becomes one of displacement, especially of so-called undesirables yielding a patchworked public space associated with private enclaves of consumption. The conclusions signal the historical resonances and comparative implications of these political-legal-security dynamics. © 2013 Urban Studies Journal Limited

    :This paper is developed to study the compression performance of video by using searching method of motion estimation OTS and SNR scalable coding to enhance the quality of video sample. The work evaluates set of suitable objectives fidelity measures, such as MSE, PSNR and CR. The model of video coding system is designed to treat the video signal as a CBR and implemented for different video samples rates. The two major components inter and intra frames compression is achieved as an optimal compensation for both quality and CBR. In the same time the basic structure of communication networks which is represented by the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) model is taken into consideration within the system BER control. The developed system is implemented using Visual Basic Language (ver 6.0) under Windows Xp operation system
