    Antibiotic resistant pattern of methicillin resistant and sensitive Staphylococcus aureus isolated from patients durining 2009-2010, Ahvaz, Iran.

    Abstract Background & aim: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important nosocomial infecting agents resistant to commonly used antibiotics. Nowadays, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is considered one of the main causes of nosocomial infections. The aim of this study was to identify the antibiotic resistance pattern of methicicllin- resistant and susceptible strains in Ahwaz, Iran. Methods: In the present cross - sectional study, a number of 255 clinically suspected cases of Staphylococcus aureus were collected during a 19 month period. The bacteria were investigated using standard biochemical tests such as catalase, mannitol fermentation, coagulase and Dnase. Sensitive strains were confirmed by disk diffusion method compared to commonly used antibiotics. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tests. Results: of 255 suspected cases, 180 were confirmed as S.aureus, a total of 59 strains of S. aureus (2/37 percent) were resistant to methicillin. Resistance to S. aureus strains resistant to methicillin included: chloramphenicol (3.38%), rifampin (45.76%), norfloxacin (89.83%), gentamicin (89.83%), ciprofloxacin, (91.52%), azithromycin, (88.13%), cotrimoxazole (86.44%) and all isolates strains were sensitive to vancomycin and nitrofurantoin. A total of 10 different patterns of antibiotic resistance in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains were identified. Conclusion: Expression of new resistance factor in nosocomial infection is one of the major challenges in treating these infections. This study showed a high prevalence of resistance against some class of antibiotics in MRSA isolated from Imam Khomeini and Golestan hospital of Ahwaz, Iran.     Proposed Pathway Linking Respiratory Infections with Depression

    Depression is one of the most important causes of disability and loss of useful life of people around the world. Acute respiratory infection caused a large number of severe illnesses and deaths of the world and most of these due to viral infections, which is estimated more than 80 of respiratory infections. Detection of viruses by immune pathogen recognition receptors activates the intracellular signaling cascade and eventually cause produces interferons. Inflammatory process begins with secretion of interferons and the expression of interferon-stimulated genes. One of the most important of these genes is indoleamine-pyrrole 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), which plays a major role in tryptophan catabolism. IDO is an intracellular monomeric enzyme that is also responsible for breaking down and consuming tryptophan in the Kynurenine pathway. Increased inflammation has been linked to decrease tryptophan concentrations and increase kynurenine levels.     Normal and dusty days comparison of culturable indoor airborne bacteria in Ahvaz, Iran

    Important sources of chemical and biological indoor pollutants include outdoor air, the human body and human activities, emission from materials, furnishings, appliances and use of commodities. The main purpose of this study was to identify culturable indoor airborne bacteria in normal and dust event days in indoor environments of a school, a hospital and a university in Ahvaz city, which individuals such as children, teenagers, adolescences and old people had activity there. Samples were collected using the biostage sampler, an Andersen-based method, with a flow rate of 28.3 l/min, from July 2010 to March 2011. Temperature and humidity were measured and registered in each time of sampling. The identification of bacteria was performed to genus level by using appropriate methods and standard biochemical tests. Gram-positive bacteria in both normal and dust event days with more than 90 had the highest concentration and frequency. Predominant bacteria in normal and dust event days were Staphylococcus spp. (72.9, 87.9 ), Streptomyces spp. (60.9, 62.1 ), Bacillus spp. (94, 89 ) and Micrococcus spp. (65.4, 71.2 ), respectively. The highest concentrations of bacteria in normal and dust event days were in winter. The range of bacteria in normal and dust event days were 0�4,800 and 210�10,000 cfu/m3, respectively. There was a significant difference between the concentration of bacteria in normal and dust event days (p = 0.001) and also a significant association was found between the concentration of total bacteria with temperature and humidity (p < 0.05). The concentration of bacteria in dust event days was 1.8 times higher than normal days. Consequently, the concentrations of bacteria in all three sampling sites were higher in dust event days than normal days indicating the impact of dust storms on increased bacterial concentration in indoor environment. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht

    Molecular characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from southwest of Iran using spa and SCCmec typing methods

    Staphylococcus aureus remains a major cause of nosocomial infection worldwide. Characterization of S. aureus isolates circulating in the southwest of Iran will contribute to understand and control the spread of the strains in this area. spa and SCCmec typing methods were used for genotyping of 125 S. aureus isolates obtained from two teaching hospitals in Ahvaz. Drug susceptibility testing was performed by using disk diffusion method. Frequency of the methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolates was 39 (n = 34) and 27 (n = 10) in Emam Khomeini and Golestan hospitals, respectively. Except for Erythromycin, MRSA strains showed high rate of resistance to antimicrobial agents including penicillin (100), norfloxacine (80), azitromycin (80), ciprofloxacin (80), gentamycin (77), cotrimoxazole (75), cephotaxime. All isolates were sensitive to vancomycin. Out of 44 MRSA strains, 39 (88.5) were SCCmec III, three (7) were IVc and two (4.5) of them were nontypeable. spa types t037 (26 isolates; 59), and t1149 (25 isolates; 31) were the most dominant types found in MRSA and methicillin sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) strains, respectively. We found SCCmec type III as the most prominent type indicating that most of the studied bacterial population had hospital origin. spa type t037, the most frequent genotype in this study were significantly (100) associated with MRSA. For the first time we are reporting spa types t692, t706 and t018 from Iran and t342, t704, t2622, t5598, t11270 and t2864 from Asia.     Molecular characterization of non-polio enteroviruses isolated from children with acute flaccid paralysis in IRAN, 2015�2018

    In addition to polioviruses, non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) are frequently isolated from patients with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) worldwide. In polio-free countries, there have been expectations that with disappearing wild poliovirus from the community, the rate of AFP would decrease, but the increasing number of AFP cases proved this notion to be wrong. There are speculations that NPEVs might be the cause of increasing AFP rate. The aim of this study was to investigate frequency, genetic diversity, circulation patterns of NPEVs isolated from AFP cases in Iran from 2015 to 2018. Fifty-three NPEVs were isolated from stool specimens of AFP cases during four years of AFP surveillance. Nested PCR and VP1 sequencing revealed 20 NPEV types in which Echovirus 3 (13.2), Echovirus 6 (13.2), Echovirus 7 (7.5), Echovirus 13 (7.5) and Echovirus 21 (7.5) were the most frequent. Coxsackie B viruses were isolated for the first time in AFP cases in Iran. The phylogenetic analysis of Echovirus 3 and Echovirus 6 revealed that Iranian echovirus strains belonged to the same cluster, indicating these viruses have been circulating in Iran for a long time. Compared to global Echovirus 3 and Echovirus 6 references, Echovirus 3 and Echovirus 6 strains detected in this study were closely related to Indian and Malaysia strains, respectively. The results of this study demonstrated a wide variety of NPEV types in Iranian patients, some of which had not been reported in previous studies.     High frequency of multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with SCCmec type III and Spa types t037 and t631 isolated from burn patients in southwest of Iran

    Methicilin resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are the major challenges in hospitals, especially in the burn units. The use of molecular typing methods is essential for tracking the spread of S. aureus infection and epidemiological investigations. The aim of this study was to find the profile of the spa types and also the prevalence of each SCCmec type of S. aureus strains in a central burn hospital in southwest of Iran. A total of 81 non-duplicate S. aureus were isolated from burn patients between April 2011 and February 2012. The susceptibility of the isolates against 13 different antibiotics was tested by disk agar diffusion (DAD) method. MRSA strains were identified by amplification of mecA gene. Multiplex-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was used to determine the SCCmec types of MRSA strains and all the S. aureus isolates were typed by spa typing method. Detection of mecA gene showed that 70 (86.4) of the isolates were MRSA. The highest rate of resistance was observed for penicillin (97.5) and erythromycin (77.8). None of the isolates were resistant to vancomycin. Sixty-seven of the 70 MRSA isolates harbored only SCCmec type III and three untypeable isolates. Five different spa types were detected. The most common spa types were t037 (42.5) and t631 (34.5) and were only found in MRSA isolates. Only SCCmec type III was found in burn patients which emphasizes the HA-MRSA origin of these strains. Only five different spa types identified in this study are in accordance with one SCCmec type which indicates that a limited number of bacterial colons are circulated in the burn unit in this hospital. © 2016 APMIS Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd
