Fractional and unquantized dc voltage generation in THz-driven semiconductor superlattices
We consider the spontaneous creation of a dc voltage across a strongly
coupled semiconductor superlattice subjected to THz radiation. We show that the
dc voltage may be approximately proportional either to an integer or to a half-
integer multiple of the frequency of the applied ac field, depending on the
ratio of the characteristic scattering rates of conducting electrons. For the
case of an ac field frequency less than the characteristic scattering rates, we
demonstrate the generation of an unquantized dc voltage.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, RevTEX, EPSF. Revised version v3: corrected typo
Time-dependent angularly averaged inverse transport
This paper concerns the reconstruction of the absorption and scattering
parameters in a time-dependent linear transport equation from knowledge of
angularly averaged measurements performed at the boundary of a domain of
interest. We show that the absorption coefficient and the spatial component of
the scattering coefficient are uniquely determined by such measurements. We
obtain stability results on the reconstruction of the absorption and scattering
parameters with respect to the measured albedo operator. The stability results
are obtained by a precise decomposition of the measurements into components
with different singular behavior in the time domain
Disentangling genetic and environmental effects on the proteotypes of individuals
Proteotypes, like genotypes, have been found to vary between individuals in several studies, but consistent molecular functional traits across studies remain to be quantified. In a meta-analysis of 11 proteomics datasets from humans and mice, we use co-variation of proteins in known functional modules across datasets and individuals to obtain a consensus landscape of proteotype variation. We find that individuals differ considerably in both protein complex abundances and stoichiometry. We disentangle genetic and environmental factors impacting these metrics, with genetic sex and specific diets together explaining 13.5% and 11.6% of the observed variation of complex abundance and stoichiometry, respectively. Sex-specific differences, for example, include various proteins and complexes, where the respective genes are not located on sex-specific chromosomes. Diet-specific differences, added to the individual genetic backgrounds, might become a starting point for personalized proteotype modulation toward desired features
Singlet Ground State and Magnetization Plateaus in BaMnO
Magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization process have been measured in
\green polycrystal. In this compound, the magnetic manganese ion exists as
Mn in a tetrahedral environment, and thus the magnetic interaction can
be described by an S=1 Heisenberg model. The ground state was found to be a
spin singlet with an excitation gap K. Magnetization
plateaus were observed at zero and at half of the saturation magnetization.
These results indicate that the present system can be represented by a coupled
antiferromagnetic dimer model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, jpsj styl
Luminescent properties of Bi-doped polycrystalline KAlCl4
We observed an intensive near-infrared luminescence in Bi-doped KAlCl4
polycrystalline material. Luminescence dependence on the excitation wavelength
and temperature of the sample was studied. Our experimental results allow
asserting that the luminescence peaked near 1 um belongs solely to Bi+ ion
which isomorphically substitutes potassium in the crystal. It was also
demonstrated that Bi+ luminescence features strongly depend on the local ion
surroundings
Phase-space structures in quantum-plasma wave turbulence
The quasilinear theory of the Wigner-Poisson system in one spatial dimension
is examined. Conservation laws and properties of the stationary solutions are
determined. Quantum effects are shown to manifest themselves in transient
periodic oscillations of the averaged Wigner function in velocity space. The
quantum quasilinear theory is checked against numerical simulations of the
bump-on-tail and the two-stream instabilities. The predicted wavelength of the
oscillations in velocity space agrees well with the numerical results
Thermodynamic theory of epitaxial ferroelectric thin films with dense domain structures
A Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire-type nonlinear phenomenological theory is
presented, which enables the thermodynamic description of dense laminar
polydomain states in epitaxial ferroelectric thin films. The theory explicitly
takes into account the mechanical substrate effect on the polarizations and
lattice strains in dissimilar elastic domains (twins). Numerical calculations
are performed for PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 films grown on (001)-oriented cubic
substrates. The "misfit strain-temperature" phase diagrams are developed for
these films, showing stability ranges of various possible polydomain and
single-domain states. Three types of polarization instabilities are revealed
for polydomain epitaxial ferroelectric films, which may lead to the formation
of new polydomain states forbidden in bulk crystals. The total dielectric and
piezoelectric small-signal responses of polydomain films are calculated,
resulting from both the volume and domain-wall contributions. For BaTiO3 films,
strong dielectric anomalies are predicted at room temperature near special
values of the misfit strain.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
