    Summary of Discussion Question 4: Energy Expandability of a Linear Collider

    We report on Discussion Question 4, in Sub-group 1 (`TeV-class') of the Snowmass Working Group E3: `Experimental Approaches: Linear Colliders', which addresses the energy expandability of a linear collider. We first synthesize discussions of the energy reach of the hardware of the 500 GeV designs for TESLA and NLC/JLC. Next, we review plans for increasing the energy to 800-1000 GeV. We then look at options for expanding the energies to 1500 GeV and sketch the two-beam accelerator approach to achieving multi-TeV energies.Comment: Presented at Snowmass 2001 (6 pages, 2 figures

    Spin Polaron Effective Magnetic Model for La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3

    The conventional paradigm of charge order for La_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 for x=0.5 has been challenged recently by a Zener polaron picture emerging from experiments and theoretical calculations. The effective low energy Hamiltonian for the magnetic degrees of freedom has been found to be a cubic Heisenberg model, with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and frustrating antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor interactions in the planes, and antiferromagnetic interaction between planes. With linear spin wave theory and diagonalization of small clusters up to 27 sites we find that the behavior of the model interpolates between the A and CE-type magnetic structures when a frustrating intraplanar interaction is tuned. The values of the interactions calculated by ab initio methods indicate a possible non-bipartite picture of polaron ordering differing from the conventional one.Comment: 21 pages and 8 figures (included), Late

The definitive version was published in Biological Bulletin 210 (2006): 18-24.Given the current trends, it seems inevitable that all biological documents will eventually exist in a digital format and be distributed across the internet. New network services and tools need to be developed to increase retrieval rates for documents and to refine data recovery. Biological data have traditionally been well managed using taxonomic principles. As part of a larger initiative to build an array of names-based network services that emulate taxonomic principles for managing biological information, we undertook the digitization of a major taxonomic reference text, Nomenclator Zoologicus. The process involved replicating the text to a high level of fidelity, parsing the content for inclusion within a database, developing tools to enable expert input into the product, and integrating the metadata and factual content within taxonomic network services. The result is a high-quality and freely available web application (http://uio.mbl.edu/NomenclatorZoologicus/) capable of being exploited in an array of biological informatics services.This work was supported with funding from the Andrew W.     Using binary stars to bound the mass of the graviton

    Interacting white dwarf binary star systems, including helium cataclysmic variable (HeCV) systems, are expected to be strong sources of gravitational radiation, and should be detectable by proposed space-based laser interferometer gravitational wave observatories such as LISA. Several HeCV star systems are presently known and can be studied optically, which will allow electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations to be correlated. Comparisons of the phases of a gravitational wave signal and the orbital light curve from an interacting binary white dwarf star system can be used to bound the mass of the graviton. Observations of typical HeCV systems by LISA could potentially yield an upper bound on the inverse mass of the graviton as strong as h/mg=λg>1×1015h/m_{g} = \lambda_{g} > 1 \times 10^{15} km (mg<1×1024m_{g} < 1 \times 10^{-24} eV), more than two orders of magnitude better than present solar system derived bounds.Comment: 21 pages plus 4 figures; ReVTe

    Dietary fat and carbohydrates differentially alter insulin sensitivity during caloric restriction

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We determined the effects of acute and chronic calorie restriction with either a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet or a low-carbohydrate diet on hepatic and skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity. METHODS: Twenty-two obese subjects (body-mass index, 36.5±0.8kg/m(2)) were randomized to a high-carbohydrate (>180g/d) or low-carbohydrate (<60g/d) energy-deficit diet. A euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic clamp, muscle biopsies, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to determine insulin action, cellular insulin signaling and intrahepatic triglyceride content before, after 48 h, and after ~11 wks (7% weight loss) of diet therapy. RESULTS: At 48 h, intrahepatic triglyceride content decreased more in the low-carbohydrate than the high-carbohydrate diet group (29.6±4.8% vs. 8.9±1.4%; P<0.05), but was similar in both groups after 7% weight loss (low-carbohydrate diet, 38.0±4.5% vs. high-carbohydrate diet, 44.5±13.5%). Basal glucose production rate decreased more in the low-carbohydrate than the high-carbohydrate diet group at 48 h (23.4±2.2% vs. 7.2±1.4%, P<0.05) and after 7% weight loss (20.0±2.4% vs. 7.9±1.2%, P<0.05). Insulin-mediated glucose uptake did not change at 48 h, but increased similarly in both groups after 7% weight loss (48.4±14.3%, P<0.05). In both groups, insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of Jun N-terminal kinase decreased by 29±13% and phosphorylation of Akt and insulin receptor substrate -1 increased by 35±9% and 36±9%, respectively, after 7% weight loss (all p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Moderate calorie restriction causes temporal changes in liver and skeletal muscle metabolism; 48 h of calorie restriction affects the liver (intrahepatic triglyceride content, hepatic insulin sensitivity, and glucose production), whereas moderate weight loss affects muscle (insulin-mediated glucose uptake and insulin signaling)

    ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND HUMAN INTERACTION: HOW TO KEEP THE HUMAN IN THE LOOP

    Army leaders are looking to procure and implement artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to solve a variety of problems and enhance existing capabilities across multiple portfolios. While there are benefits to implementing new technologies, including AI, there is often a major pitfall: the human factor as a user is consistently underrepresented. This disparity between how AI-enabled systems are being acquired and how they should be acquired is often related to a gap in the development of systems not aligning with Human Systems Integration (HSI) best practices. The design of systems that facilitate human-agent learning requires further guidance. We use data from the System for Award Management (SAM) along with discussions from subject-matter experts both in government and industry to capture how AI-enabled systems are currently being procured by the Army. The combined results of the team's methodology revealed that there are varying understandings across the Army of what an AI requirement is, and there are no obvious processes or specific AI acquisition guidelines that are universally followed when developing an AI requirement. It was also apparent that HSI was not always included in requirements as required by Army regulations.     Search for the electric dipole moment of the electron with thorium monoxide

    The electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM) is a signature of CP-violating physics beyond the Standard Model. We describe an ongoing experiment to measure or set improved limits to the eEDM, using a cold beam of thorium monoxide (ThO) molecules. The metastable H3Δ1H {}^3\Delta_1 state in ThO has important advantages for such an experiment. We argue that the statistical uncertainty of an eEDM measurement could be improved by as much as 3 orders of magnitude compared to the current experimental limit, in a first-generation apparatus using a cold ThO beam. We describe our measurements of the HH state lifetime and the production of ThO molecules in a beam, which provide crucial data for the eEDM sensitivity estimate. Springer, ChamSeveral proposals to improve the performance controlling a P300-based BCI speller have been studied using the standard row-column presentation (RCP) par-adigm. However, this paradigm could not be suitable for those patients with lack of gaze control. To solve that, the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) para-digm, which presents the stimuli located in the same position, has been proposed in previous studies. Thus, the aim of the present work is to assess if a stimuli set of pictures that improves the performance in RCP, could also improve the per-formance in a RSVP paradigm. Six participants have controlled four conditions in a calibration task: letters in RCP, pictures in RCP, letters in RSVP and pictures in RSVP. The results showed that pictures in RCP obtained the best accuracy and information transfer rate. The improvement effect given by pictures was greater in the RCP paradigm than in RSVP.
