    Long-range beam-beam experiments in the relativistic heavy ion collider

    Long-range beam-beam effects are a potential limit to the LHC performance with the nominal design parameters, and certain upgrade scenarios under discussion. To mitigate long-range effects, current carrying wires parallel to the beam were proposed and space is reserved in the LHC for such wires. Two current carrying wires were installed in RHIC to study the effect of strong long-range beam-beam effects in a collider, as well as test the compensation of a single long-range interaction. The experimental data were used to benchmark simulations.     The N=1 triplet vertex operator superalgebras

    We introduce a new family of C_2-cofinite N=1 vertex operator superalgebras SW(m), m1m \geq 1, which are natural super analogs of the triplet vertex algebra family W(p), p2p \geq 2, important in logarithmic conformal field theory. We classify irreducible SW(m)-modules and discuss logarithmic modules. We also compute bosonic and fermionic formulas of irreducible SW(m) characters. Finally, we contemplate possible connections between the category of SW(m)-modules and the category of modules for the quantum group U^{small}_q(sl_2), q=e^{\frac{2 \pi i}{2m+1}}, by focusing primarily on properties of characters and the Zhu's algebra A(SW(m)).     Logarithmic intertwining operators and vertex operators

    This is the first in a series of papers where we study logarithmic intertwining operators for various vertex subalgebras of Heisenberg vertex operator algebras. In this paper we examine logarithmic intertwining operators associated with rank one Heisenberg vertex operator algebra M(1)aM(1)_a, of central charge 112a21-12a^2. We classify these operators in terms of {\em depth} and provide explicit constructions in all cases. Furthermore, for a=0a=0 we focus on the vertex operator subalgebra L(1,0) of M(1)0M(1)_0 and obtain logarithmic intertwining operators among indecomposable Virasoro algebra modules. In particular, we construct explicitly a family of {\em hidden} logarithmic intertwining operators, i.e., those that operate among two ordinary and one genuine logarithmic L(1,0)-module.Comment: 32 pages.     Soluble FAS and transforming growth factor beta 2 in infections with viral and bacterial zoonoses

    Određivali smo razine sFas (signalna receptor molekula koja biva otpuštena tijekom apoptoze u cirkulirajućem obliku) i TGF-β2 (multifunkcionalni citokin) u bolesnika s različitim zoonozama. Serumi su dobiveni od bolesnika hospitaliziranih u Klinici za infektivne bolesti »Dr. Fran Mihaljević«, Zagreb, Hrvatska, s dijagnozama: hemoragijska vrućica s bubrežnim sindromom – HVBS (n=20), leptospiroza (n=9), borelioza (n=7) ili krpeljni meningoencefalitis – KME (n=7). Za mjerenje razina sFas i TGF-β2 u serumima koristili smo ELISA kitove prema uputama proizvođača. Značajno povišena razina sFas je nađena u svih bolesnika. Ipak, bolesnici s KME ili boreliozom imali su značajno niže razine nego bolesnici s leptospirozom. Nasuprot tome, bolesnici s KME ili boreliozom su imali značajno više razine TGF-β2 nego zdrave kontrole. Naši preliminarni podaci ukazuju da bi povišene razine sFas i TGF-β2 mogle imati ulogu u imunopatogenezi ispitivanih virusnih i bakterijskih zoonoza.We determined levels of sFas (signal receptor molecule released during apoptosis in a soluble circulating form) and TGF-β2 (multifunctional cytokine) in patients with different zoonoses. Serum samples were obtained from patients hospitalized at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases, Zagreb, Croatia with diagnoses of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome – HFRS, (n=20), leptospirosis (n=9), Lyme borreliosis (n=7), or tick-borne encephalitis – TBE (n=7). In all sera samples the levels of sFAS or TGF-β2 levels were measured using ELISAkits according to the manufacturer\u27s protocol. Significant increase in the levels of sFas was found in all patients. However, the patients with TBE or Lyme borreliosis had significantly lower levels than patients with leptospirosis. In contrary, patients with TBE or Lyme borreliosis had significantly higher levels of TGF-β2 than healthy controls. Our preliminary data indicate that an increase of sFas and TGF-β2 levels may have a role in the immunopathogenesis of tested viral and bacterial zoonoses

    From boundary to bulk in logarithmic CFT

    The analogue of the charge-conjugation modular invariant for rational logarithmic conformal field theories is constructed. This is done by reconstructing the bulk spectrum from a simple boundary condition (the analogue of the Cardy `identity brane'). We apply the general method to the c_1,p triplet models and reproduce the previously known bulk theory for p=2 at c=-2. For general p we verify that the resulting partition functions are modular invariant. We also construct the complete set of 2p boundary states, and confirm that the identity brane from which we started indeed exists. As a by-product we obtain a logarithmic version of the Verlinde formula for the c_1,p triplet models.Comment: 35 pages, 2 figures; v2: minor corrections, version to appear in J.Phys.

    The boundary theory for the c=-2 triplet model is investigated in detail. In particular, we show that there are four different boundary conditions that preserve the triplet algebra, and check the consistency of the corresponding boundary operators by constructing their OPE coefficients explicitly.     A phase II study of radiation and Docetaxel and Cisplatin in the treatment of locally advanced pancreatic carcinoma. FNCLCC-ACCORD 09/0201 trial. Radiotherapy has to be interrupted in 7 pts. 30 pts experienced at least one episode of grade 3 or 4 toxicity (asthenia 12 pts, anorexia 11 pts, vomiting 10 pts, nausea 9 pts, abdominal pain 5 pts). No toxic death was observed. 6 pts underwent secondary pancreatic resection (4 compete resection and 1 pt with histological complete remission). The objective response rate (CR 5 pts, PR 3 pts), was 16% with a median duration of 7.6 months. At 6 months, 30 pts had progressed. Median progression free survival was 5.8 months. With a 21 months median follow up, median overall survival was 9.6 months and 18 months survival rate of 31%. Conclusion: The association docetaxel+cisplatin+radiotherapy has limited effect in patients with locally advanced pancreatic carcinoma but major objective responses have been observed allowing secondary resections.     BACKGROUND: It has been shown that free DNA circulates in serum plasma of patients with cancer and that at least part is present in the form of oligo- and monucleosomes, a marker of cell death. Preliminary data has shown a good correlation between decrease of nucleosomes with response and prognosis. Here, we performed pre- and post-chemotherapy determinations of serum nucleosomes with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method in a group of patients with cervical cancer receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy. METHODS: From December 2000 to June 2001, 41 patients with cervical cancer staged as FIGO stages IB2-IIIB received three 21-day courses of carboplatin and paclitaxel, both administered at day 1; then, patients underwent radical hysterectomy. Nucleosomes were measured the day before (baseline), at day seven of the first course and day seven of the third course of chemotherapy. Values of nucleosomes were analyzed with regard to pathologic response and to time to progression-free and overall survival. RESULTS: All patients completed chemotherapy, were evaluable for pathologic response, and had nucleosome levels determined. At a mean follow-up of 23 months (range, 7–26 months), projected progression time and overall survival were 80.3 and 80.4%, respectively. Mean differential values of nucleosomes were lower in the third course as compared with the first course (p >0.001). The decrease in the third course correlated with pathologic response (p = 0.041). Survival analysis showed a statistically significant, better progression-free and survival time in patients who showed lower levels at the third course (p = 0.0243 and p = 0.0260, respectively). Cox regression analysis demonstrated that nucleosome increase in the third course increased risk of death to 6.86 (95% confidence interval [CI 95%], 0.84–56.0). CONCLUSION: Serum nucleosomes may have a predictive role for response and prognostic significance in patients with cervical cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy

    Incidentalomas during imaging for primary hyperparathyroidism—incidence and clinical outcomes

    Background: Imaging for pre-operative localisation of parathyroid glands in primary hyperparathyroidism is now routine. This has led to the detection of incidental lesions (incidentalomas) in other organs, the nature of which is not well characterised. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence, characteristics and outcomes in patients who had incidental findings on parathyroid imaging. Methods: Records of patients who underwent imaging for primary hyperparathyroidism over 2 years were reviewed to identify incidental lesions detected on parathyroid imaging. Patients with persistent or renal hyperparathyroidism were excluded. Details on the management of detected incidentalomas were obtained from patient records. Results: Incidentalomas were identified in 17 of 170 patients (10 %) undergoing parathyroid imaging. Incidentalomas included thyroid (n = 11), breast (n = 3), lateral compartment of the neck (n = 1), lung (n = 1) and clavicle (n = 1). However, no disease of clinical significance needing treatment was detected on further investigation. Conclusions: Although a significant proportion of patients undergoing parathyroid imaging had incidental lesions detected, these seem to be of little clinical significance. The morbidity and cost of further interventions on these incidentalomas need to be weighed against the benefits of routine imaging in improving outcomes of first-time surgery in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.
