A Conserved Bach Current
The Bach tensor and a vector which generates conformal symmetries allow a
conserved four-current to be defined. The Bach four-current gives rise to a
quasilocal two-surface expression for power per luminosity distance in the
Vaidya exterior of collapsing fluid interiors. This is interpreted in terms of
entropy generation.Comment: to appear in Class. Quantum Gra
Neurospora mating type symbol mt revised to mat
After discussion with members of the Neurospora genetics community, we propose to revise the symbol designating the mating type locus from mt to mat
Features of pulsed synchronization of a systems with a tree-dimensional phase space
Features of synchronization picture in the system with the limit cycle
embedded in a three-dimensional phase space are considered. By the example of
Ressler system and Dmitriev - Kislov generator under the action of a periodic
sequence of delta - function it is shown, that synchronization picture
significantly depends on the direction of pulse action. Features of
synchronization tons appeared in these models are observed.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure
Noise Effects on the Complex Patterns of Abnormal Heartbeats
Patients at high risk for sudden death often exhibit complex heart rhythms in
which abnormal heartbeats are interspersed with normal heartbeats. We analyze
such a complex rhythm in a single patient over a 12-hour period and show that
the rhythm can be described by a theoretical model consisting of two
interacting oscillators with stochastic elements. By varying the magnitude of
the noise, we show that for an intermediate level of noise, the model gives
best agreement with key statistical features of the dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, RevTe
Magnetovac Cylinder to Magnetovac Torus
A method for mapping known cylindrical magnetovac solutions to solutions in
torus coordinates is developed. Identification of the cylinder ends changes
topology from R1 x S1 to S1 x S1. An analytic Einstein-Maxwell solution for a
toroidal magnetic field in tori is presented. The toroidal interior is matched
to an asymptotically flat vacuum exterior, connected by an Israel boundary
layer.Comment: to appear in Class. Quant. Gra
Fractal Scales in a Schwarzschild Atmosphere
Recently, Glass and Krisch have extended the Vaidya radiating metric to
include both a radiation fluid and a string fluid [1999 Class. Quantum Grav.
vol 16, 1175]. Mass diffusion in the extended Schwarzschild atmosphere was
studied. The continuous solutions of classical diffusive transport are believed
to describe the envelope of underlying fractal behavior. In this work we
examine the classical picture at scales on which fractal behavior might be
evident.Comment: to appear in Class. Quantum Gra
CDKN1C/p57kip2 Is a Candidate Tumor Suppressor Gene in Human Breast Cancer
BACKGROUND. CDKN1C (also known as p57KIP2) is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor previously implicated in several types of human cancer. Its family members (CDKN1A/p21CIP1 and B/p27KIP1) have been implicated in breast cancer, but information about CDKN1C's role is limited. We hypothesized that decreased CDKN1C may be involved in human breast carcinogenesis in vivo. METHODS. We determined rates of allele imbalance or loss of heterozygosity (AI/LOH) in CDKN1C, using an intronic polymorphism, and in the surrounding 11p15.5 region in 82 breast cancers. We examined the CDKN1C mRNA level in 10 cancers using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), and the CDKN1C protein level in 20 cancers using immunohistochemistry (IHC). All samples were obtained using laser microdissection. Data were analyzed using standard statistical tests. RESULTS. AI/LOH at 11p15.5 occurred in 28/73 (38%) informative cancers, but CDKN1C itself underwent AI/LOH in only 3/16 (19%) cancers (p = ns). In contrast, CDKN1C mRNA levels were reduced in 9/10 (90%) cancers (p < 0.0001), ranging from 2–60% of paired normal epithelium. Similarly, CDKN1C protein staining was seen in 19/20 (95%) cases' normal epithelium but in only 7/14 (50%) cases' CIS (p < 0.004) and 5/18 (28%) cases' IC (p < 0.00003). The reduction appears primarily due to loss of CDKN1C expression from myoepithelial layer cells, which stained intensely in 17/20 (85%) normal lobules, but in 0/14 (0%) CIS (p < 0.00001). In contrast, luminal cells displayed less intense, focal staining fairly consistently across histologies. Decreased CDKN1C was not clearly associated with tumor grade, histology, ER, PR or HER2 status. CONCLUSION. CDKN1C is expressed in normal epithelium of most breast cancer cases, mainly in the myothepithelial layer. This expression decreases, at both the mRNA and protein level, in the large majority of breast cancers, and does not appear to be mediated by AI/LOH at the gene. Thus, CDKN1C may be a breast cancer tumor suppressor.Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (DAMD 17-99-1-9573); National Institutes of Health PHS (CA081078); LaPann Fun
Effect of periodic parametric excitation on an ensemble of force-coupled self-oscillators
We report the synchronization behavior in a one-dimensional chain of
identical limit cycle oscillators coupled to a mass-spring load via a force
relation. We consider the effect of periodic parametric modulation on the final
synchronization states of the system. Two types of external parametric
excitations are investigated numerically: periodic modulation of the stiffness
of the inertial oscillator and periodic excitation of the frequency of the
self-oscillatory element. We show that the synchronization scenarios are ruled
not only by the choice of parameters of the excitation force but depend on the
initial collective state in the ensemble. We give detailed analysis of
entrainment behavior for initially homogeneous and inhomogeneous states. Among
other results, we describe a regime of partial synchronization. This regime is
characterized by the frequency of collective oscillation being entrained to the
stimulation frequency but different from the average individual oscillators
frequency.Comment: Comments and suggestions are welcom
Dimension in a Radiative Stellar Atmosphere
Dimensional scales are examined in an extended 3+1 Vaidya atmosphere
surrounding a Schwarzschild source. At one scale, the Vaidya null fluid
vanishes and the spacetime contains only a single spherical 2-surface. Both of
these behaviors can be addressed by including higher dimensions in the
spacetime metric.Comment: to appear in Gen. Rel. Gra
