The Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect at 1 and 2 mm towards ROSAT Clusters
An observing campaign was devoted to the search for the Sunyaev-Zeldovich
(S-Z) effect towards X-ray ROSAT Clusters in the millimetric spectral domain. A
double channel (1.2 and 2 {\it mm}) photometer was installed at the focus of
the 15m Swedish ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST) in Chile in september 1994
and 1995 and observations of the targets S1077, A2744, S295 and RXJ0658-5557
were gathered. Detections were found for A2744 at 1 {\it mm} and in both
channels (at 1.2 and 2 {\it mm}) towards RXJ0658-5557. For the first time there
is evidence for the S-Z enhancement and both the latter and the decrement were
detected on the same source. We discuss astrophysical and systematic effects

Self-contained Kondo effect in single molecules
Kondo coupling of f and conduction electrons is a common feature of
f-electron intermetallics. Similar effects should occur in carbon ring
systems(metallocenes). Evidence for Kondo coupling in Ce(C8H8)2 (cerocene) and
the ytterbocene Cp*2Yb(bipy) is reported from magnetic susceptibility and
L_III-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy. These well-defined systems provide a
new way to study the Kondo effect on the nanoscale, should generate insight
into the Anderson Lattice problem, and indicate the importance of this
often-ignored contribution to bonding in organometallics.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures (eps
Quantifying structural damage from self-irradiation in a plutonium superconductor
The 18.5 K superconductor PuCoGa5 has many unusual properties, including
those due to damage induced by self-irradiation. The superconducting transition
temperature decreases sharply with time, suggesting a radiation-induced Frenkel
defect concentration much larger than predicted by current radiation damage
theories. Extended x-ray absorption fine-structure measurements demonstrate
that while the local crystal structure in fresh material is well ordered, aged
material is disordered much more strongly than expected from simple defects,
consistent with strong disorder throughout the damage cascade region. These
data highlight the potential impact of local lattice distortions relative to
defects on the properties of irradiated materials and underscore the need for
more atomic-resolution structural comparisons between radiation damage

Cancer mortality and morbidity in employees of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, 1946-86.
In further analyses of a cohort of 39,718 United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority employees after 7 more years follow-up, cancer mortality, based on 1,506 deaths in 1946-86, was 20% below the national average. Prostatic cancer mortality showed a statistically significant association with external radiation exposure, largely confined to men who were also monitored for internal contamination by radionuclides other than plutonium. Prostatic cancer mortality was highest in radiation workers at Winfrith. In women monitored for radiation exposure, mortality from cancer of the uterus (including the cervix uteri) was increased relative to other employees, and, showed a statistically significant association with external radiation exposure. While there were some other statistically significant results, as would be expected by chance alone when multiple comparisons are made, there were no other cancer sites with consistently exceptional findings. Point estimates for risk associated with increasing exposure to radiation suggest a decrease of four deaths per 10(4) person-years per Sv for leukaemia and an increase of 20 deaths for all cancers except leukaemia, but confidence intervals indicate that a wide range of values are compatible with the data. Cancer morbidity based on 1,699 registrations in 1971-84 was 12% below the national average. Findings from site-specific analyses largely replicated those of the mortality analyses
Slow crossover in YbXCu4 intermediate valence compounds
We compare the results of measurements of the magnetic susceptibility Chi(T),
the linear coefficient of specific heat Gamma(T)=C(T)/T and 4f occupation
number nf(T) for the intermediate valence compounds YbXCu4 (X = Ag, Cd, In, Mg,
Tl, Zn) to the predictions of the Anderson impurity model, calculated in the
non-crossing approximation (NCA). The crossover from the low temperature Fermi
liquid state to the high temperature local moment state is substantially slower
in the compounds than predicted by the NCA; this corresponds to the
''protracted screening'' recently predicted for the Anderson Lattice. We
present results for the dynamic susceptibility, measured through neutron
scattering experiments, to show that the deviations between theory and
experiment are not due to crystal field effects, and we present
x-ray-absorption fine-structure (XAFS) results that show the local crystal
structure around the X atoms is well ordered, so that the deviations probably
do not arise from Kondo Disorder. The deviations may correlate with the
background conduction electron density, as predicted for protracted screening.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review B on June 7, 2000, accepted for

Survey of charge symmetry breaking operators for dd -> alpha pi0
The charge-symmetry-breaking amplitudes for the recently observed d d ->
alpha pi0 reaction are investigated. Chiral perturbation theory is used to
classify and identify the leading-order terms. Specific forms of the related
one- and two-body tree level diagrams are derived. As a first step toward a
full calculation, a few tree-level two-body diagrams are evaluated at each
considered order, using a simplified set of d and alpha wave functions and a
plane-wave approximation for the initial dd state. The leading-order
pion-exchange term is shown to be suppressed in this model because of poor
overlap of the initial and final states. The higher-order one-body and
short-range (heavy-meson-exchange) amplitudes provide better matching between
the initial and final states and therefore contribute significantly and
coherently to the cross section. The consequences this might have for a full
calculation, with realistic wave functions and a more complete set of
