    Safety of Roll-on Roll-off vessels

    The design concept of ro-ro ship has come under considerable criticisms after a series of accidents and subsequent loss of lives. This thesis studies the design concept of ro-ro which makes it different from traditional, subdivided vessels. It is felt, that to be able to put ro-ro safety into perspective, particular attention should be given to elements that affect safety of shipping in general. Casualty statistics are studied, in order to prove if the level of risk of accident is higher for ro-ro than traditional ships. The thesis also hope to show if ro-ros are more likely to capsize after events involving, collision, cargo shift or foundering. Having identified the various hazards of ro-ro, some changes to the concept are put forward which may improve its safety. Improvement in operation procedures, shore management and training is also suggested

    Decidability Results for Multi-objective Stochastic Games

    We study stochastic two-player turn-based games in which the objective of one player is to ensure several infinite-horizon total reward objectives, while the other player attempts to spoil at least one of the objectives. The games have previously been shown not to be determined, and an approximation algorithm for computing a Pareto curve has been given. The major drawback of the existing algorithm is that it needs to compute Pareto curves for finite horizon objectives (for increasing length of the horizon), and the size of these Pareto curves can grow unboundedly, even when the infinite-horizon Pareto curve is small. By adapting existing results, we first give an algorithm that computes the Pareto curve for determined games. Then, as the main result of the paper, we show that for the natural class of stopping games and when there are two reward objectives, the problem of deciding whether a player can ensure satisfaction of the objectives with given thresholds is decidable. The result relies on intricate and novel proof which shows that the Pareto curves contain only finitely many points. As a consequence, we get that the two-objective discounted-reward problem for unrestricted class of stochastic games is decidable.Comment: 35 page

    Probabilistic Timed Automata with Clock-Dependent Probabilities

    Probabilistic timed automata are classical timed automata extended with discrete probability distributions over edges. We introduce clock-dependent probabilistic timed automata, a variant of probabilistic timed automata in which transition probabilities can depend linearly on clock values. Clock-dependent probabilistic timed automata allow the modelling of a continuous relationship between time passage and the likelihood of system events. We show that the problem of deciding whether the maximum probability of reaching a certain location is above a threshold is undecidable for clock-dependent probabilistic timed automata. On the other hand, we show that the maximum and minimum probability of reaching a certain location in clock-dependent probabilistic timed automata can be approximated using a region-graph-based approach.Comment: Full version of a paper published at RP 201

    Background: Previous research suggests motion induced fatigue contributes to significant performance degradation and is likely related to a higher incidence of accidents and injuries. However, the exact effect of continuous multidirectional platform perturbations on energy cost (EC) with experienced personnel on boats and other seafaring vessels remains unknown. Objective: The objective of this experiment was to measure the metabolic ECs associated with maintaining postural stability in a motion-rich environment. Methods: Twenty volunteer participants, who were free of any musculoskeletal or balance disorders, performed three tasks while immersed in a moving environment that varied motion profiles similar to those experienced by workers on a mid-size commercial fishing vessel (static platform (baseline), low and high motions (HMs)). Cardiorespiratory parameters were collected using an indirect calorimetric system that continuously measured breath-by-breath samples. Heart rate was recoded using a wireless heart monitor. Results: Results indicate a systematic increase in metabolic costs associated with increased platform motions. The increases were most pronounced during the standing and lifting activities and were 50% greater during the HM condition when compared to no motion. Increased heart rates were also observed. Discussion: Platform motions have a significant impact on metabolic costs that are both task and magnitude of motion dependent. Practitioners must take into consideration the influence of motion-rich environments upon the systematic accumulation of operator fatigue

    On generation of metric perturbations during preheating

    We consider the generation of the scalar mode of the metric perturbations during preheating stage in a two field model with the potential V(ϕ,χ)=m2ϕ22+g2ϕ2χ22V(\phi, \chi)= {m^{2}\phi^{2}\over 2}+{g^{2}\phi^{2}\chi^{2}\over 2}. We discuss two possible sources of such perturbations: a) due to the coupling between the perturbation of the matter field δχ\delta \chi and the background part of the matter field χ0(t)\chi_{0}(t), b) due to non-linear fluctuations in a condensate of ``particles'' of the field χ\chi. Both types of the metric perturbations are assumed to be small, and estimated using the linear theory of the metric perturbations. We estimate analytically the upper limit of the amplitude of the metric perturbations for all scales in the limit of so-called broad resonance, and show that the large scale metric perturbations are very small, and taking them into account does not influence the standard picture of the production of the metric perturbations in inflationary scenario.Comment: This version is to be published in PRD, new references added and typos correcte

    Efficacy of Antenatal Corticosteroid Treatment on Neurodevelopmental Outcome according to Head Circumference at Birth

    BACKGROUND: There are concerns about the efficacy of antenatal corticosteroid treatment (ACT) in the growth-restricted fetus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of ACT on neurodevelopmental outcome at 2 years of corrected age according to the z score of birth head circumference (ZS HC) in a large prospective cohort of preterm infants. METHODS: This study was conducted as a population-based, prospective, multicenter study, including 4,965 infants born between 24 and 33 weeks\u27 gestation and whose status regarding ACT and the measurement of head circumference at birth were available. They were evaluated at 2 years of corrected age to assess neurological outcome. Three approaches were considered to estimate the effect of ACT on neurodevelopment: (i) logistic regression with adjustment on propensity score, (ii) weighted logistic regression using the inverse probability of treatment weighting method, and (iii) 1:1 matching of gestational age, ZS HC, and propensity score between treated and nontreated infants. RESULTS: ACT was documented in 60% of infants. Three groups of infants were considered according to their ZS HC: between -3 and -1 standard deviation (SD), -1 and +1 SD, and +1 and +3 SD, respectively. ACT was associated with a significant improvement of neurodevelopmental outcome only for infants with an ZS HC of between +1 and +3 SD (adjusted OR 1.72; 95% CI 1.06-2.79). Moreover, ORs estimated in the -3 to -1 and +1 to +3 categories were significantly different. CONCLUSION: We found beneficial effects of ACT on neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 years of corrected age only in preterm infants with a ZS HC >1 SD

    Heat Shock Proteins Alterations in Rheumatoid Arthritis

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease characterized by the attack of the immune system on the body’s healthy joint lining and degeneration of articular structures. This disease involves an increased release of inflammatory mediators in the affected joint that sensitize sensory neurons and create a positive feedback loop to further enhance their release. Among these mediators, the cytokines and neuropeptides are responsible for the crippling pain and the persistent neurogenic inflammation associated with RA. More importantly, specific proteins released either centrally or peripherally have been shown to play opposing roles in the pathogenesis of this disease: an inflammatory role that mediates and increases the severity of inflammatory response and/or an anti-inflammatory and protective role that modulates the process of inflammation. In this review, we will shed light on the neuroimmune function of different members of the heat shock protein (HSPs) family and the complex manifold actions that they exert during the course of RA. Specifically, we will focus our discussion on the duality in the mechanism of action of Hsp27, Hsp60, Hsp70, and Hsp90
