Further search for a neutral boson with a mass around 9 MeV/c2
Two dedicated experiments on internal pair conversion (IPC) of isoscalar M1
transitions were carried out in order to test a 9 MeV/c2 X-boson scenario. In
the 7Li(p,e+e-)8Be reaction at 1.1 MeV proton energy to the predominantly T=0
level at 18.15 MeV, a significant deviation from IPC was observed at large pair
correlation angles. In the 11B(d,n e+e-)12C reaction at 1.6 MeV, leading to the
12.71 MeV 1+ level with pure T=0 character, an anomaly was observed at 9
MeV/c2. The compatibility of the results with the scenario is discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 table
Stochastic programming for multiple-leg network revenue management
Airline seat inventory control is a very profitable tool in the airline industry. Mathematical programming models provide booking limits or bid-prices for all itineraries and fare classes based on demand forecasts. But the actual revenue generated in the booking process fails to meet expectations. Simple deterministic models based on expected demand generate better revenue than more advanced probabilistic models. Recently suggested models put even more effort into demand forecasting. We will show that the dynamic booking process rather than the demand forecasts needs to be addressed. In particular the nesting strategies applied in booking control will counter-effect the profitability of advanced estimation of booking limits and bid-prices.simulation;revenue management;mathematical programming
Twisted Open Strings from Closed Strings: The WZW Orientation Orbifolds
Including {\it world-sheet orientation-reversing automorphisms}
in the orbifold program, we construct the operator
algebras and twisted KZ systems of the general WZW {\it orientation orbifold}
. We find that the orientation-orbifold sectors corresponding
to each are {\it twisted open} WZW strings, whose
properties are quite distinct from conventional open-string orientifold
sectors. As simple illustrations, we also discuss the classical (high-level)
limit of our construction and free-boson examples on abelian .Comment: 65 pages, typos correcte
Influence of the gate leakage current on the stability of organic single-crystal field-effect transistors
We investigate the effect of a small leakage current through the gate
insulator on the stability of organic single-crystal field-effect transistors
(FETs). We find that, irrespective of the specific organic molecule and
dielectric used, leakage current flowing through the gate insulator results in
an irreversible degradation of the single-crystal FET performance. This
degradation occurs even when the leakage current is several orders of magnitude
smaller than the source-drain current. The experimental data indicate that a
stable operation requires the leakage current to be smaller than $10^{-9} \
\mathrm{A/cm}^2$. Our results also suggest that gate leakage currents may
determine the lifetime of thin-film transistors used in applications.Comment: submitted to Appl. Phys. Let
A Farey Tail for Attractor Black Holes
The microstates of 4d BPS black holes in IIA string theory compactified on a
Calabi-Yau manifold are counted by a (generalized) elliptic genus of a (0,4)
conformal field theory. By exploiting a spectral flow that relates states with
different charges, and using the Rademacher formula, we find that the elliptic
genus has an exact asymptotic expansion in terms of semi-classical
saddle-points of the dual supergravity theory. This generalizes the known
"Black Hole Farey Tail" of [1] to the case of attractor black holes.Comment: 36 pages, 3 figures, note adde
Membranes for Topological M-Theory
We formulate a theory of topological membranes on manifolds with G_2
holonomy. The BRST charges of the theories are the superspace Killing vectors
(the generators of global supersymmetry) on the background with reduced
holonomy G_2. In the absence of spinning formulations of supermembranes, the
starting point is an N=2 target space supersymmetric membrane in seven
euclidean dimensions. The reduction of the holonomy group implies a twisting of
the rotations in the tangent bundle of the branes with ``R-symmetry'' rotations
in the normal bundle, in contrast to the ordinary spinning formulation of
topological strings, where twisting is performed with internal U(1) currents of
the N=(2,2) superconformal algebra. The double dimensional reduction on a
circle of the topological membrane gives the strings of the topological A-model
(a by-product of this reduction is a Green-Schwarz formulation of topological
strings). We conclude that the action is BRST-exact modulo topological terms
and fermionic equations of motion. We discuss the role of topological membranes
in topological M-theory and the relation of our work to recent work by Hitchin
and by Dijkgraaf et al.Comment: 22 pp, plain tex. v2: refs. adde
Fabrication scheme for dense aquatic flow sensor arrays
A fabrication scheme to realize dense arrays of flexible, closed membranes with a small gap separating them from the substrate is presented. These membranes are the first step towards aquatic hair based flow sensors biomimicking fish lateral line. Electrodes are integrated underneath the membrane to avoid contact with the liquid. Arrays of membranes with a diameter of 100 μm, gap height of 3 μm, and mutual distance of 200 μm have been successfully fabricated
