Quantum Nernst effect in a bismuth single crystal
We report a theoretical calculation explaining the quantum Nernst effect
observed experimentally in a bismuth single crystal. Generalizing the
edge-current picture in two dimensions, we show that the peaks of the Nernst
coefficient survive in three dimensions due to a van Hove singularity. We also
evaluate the phonon-drag effect on the Nernst coefficient numerically. Our

Density matrix renormalization group in a two-dimensional Hamiltonian lattice model
Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) is applied to a (1+1)-dimensional
model. Spontaneous breakdown of discrete symmetry is
studied numerically using vacuum wavefunctions. We obtain the critical coupling
and the critical exponent
, which are consistent with the Monte Carlo and the
exact results, respectively. The results are based on extrapolation to the
continuum limit with lattice sizes , and 1000. We show that the

Crack cocaine induced upper airway injury.
The paper describes the presentation and management of patients presenting with crack cocaine induced upper airway injury. The study involved a retrospective clinical series of six patients with crack cocaine induced upper airway injury. Demographics, symptoms, physical exam, flexible laryngoscopy findings, treatment and intervention were recorded. All patients with crack cocaine induced thermal injury presented with mouth or throat pain plus at least one other laryngeal symptom, such as globus sensation, dysphagia or throat tightness. On physical exam, the supraglottis was the most common subsite of endolaryngeal injury. The only statistically significant finding was the number of subsites on initial physical exam and flexible laryngoscopy and need for airway intervention (p = 0.001). Airway intervention was required in one patient, while the remaining patients were closely observed until resolution of symptoms. Upper airway injury should be suspected in patients who present with pain and laryngeal symptoms after smoking crack cocaine
Nernst effect in semi-metals: the meritorious heaviness of electrons
We present a study of electric, thermal and thermoelectric transport in
elemental Bismuth, which presents a Nernst coefficient much larger than what
was found in correlated metals. We argue that this is due to the combination of
an exceptionally low carrier density with a very long electronic
mean-free-path. The low thermomagnetic figure of merit is traced to the
lightness of electrons. Heavy-electron semi-metals, which keep a metallic
behavior in presence of a magnetic field, emerge as promising candidates for
thermomagnetic cooling at low temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, including 4 figure
Development of Root Caries Prevention by Nano-Hydroxyapatite Coating and Improvement of Dentin Acid Resistance
There is no established method for optimizing the use of dentin to prevent root caries, which are increasing in the elderly population. This study aimed to develop a new approach for root caries prevention by focusing on bioapatite (BioHap), a new biomaterial, combined with fluoride. Bovine dentin was used as a sample, and an acid challenge was performed in three groups: no fluoride (control group), acidulated phosphate fluoride treatment (APF group), and BioHap + APF treatment (BioHap group). After applying the new compound, the acid resistance of dentin was compared with that of APF alone. The BioHap group had fewer defects and an increased surface hardness than the APF group. The BioHap group had the smallest lesion depth and least mineral loss among all groups. Using a scanning electron microscope in the BioHap group showed the closure of dentinal tubules and a coating on the surface. The BioHap group maintained a coating and had higher acid resistance than the APF group. The coating prevents acid penetration, and the small particle size of BioHap and its excellent reactivity with fluoride are thought to have contributed to the improvement of acid resistance in dentin. Pressure dependence of the thermoelectric power of single-walled carbon nanotubes
We have measured the thermoelectric power (S) of high purity single-walled
carbon nanotube mats as a function of temperature at various hydrostatic
pressures up to 2.0 GPa. The thermoelectric power is positive, and it increases
in a monotonic way with increasing temperature for all pressures. The low
temperature (T < 40 K) linear thermoelectric power is pressure independent and
is characteristic for metallic nanotubes. At higher temperatures it is enhanced
and though S(T) is linear again above about 100 K it has a nonzero intercept.
This enhancement is strongly pressure dependent and is related to the change of
the phonon population with hydrostatic pressure.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Long Term outcomes of percutaneous atrial fibrillation ablation in patients with continuous monitoring
INTRODUCTION: There is limited data using continuous monitoring to assess outcomes of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. This study assessed long-term outcomes of AF ablation in patients with implantable cardiac devices. METHODS: 207 patients (mean age 68.1 ± 9.5, 50.3% men) undergoing ablation for symptomatic AF were followed up for a mean period of 924.5 ± 636.7 days. Techniques included The Pulmonary Vein Ablation Catheter (PVAC) (59.4%), cryoablation (17.4%), point by point (14.0%) and The Novel Irrigated Multipolar Radiofrequency Ablation Catheter (nMARQ) (9.2%). RESULTS: 130 (62.8%) patients had paroxysmal AF (PAF) and 77 (37.2%) persistent AF. First ablation and repeat ablation reduced AF burden significantly (relative risk 0.91, [95% CI 0.89 to 0.94]; P <0.0001 and 0.90, [95% CI, 0.86-0.94]; P <0.0001). Median AF burden in PAF patients reduced from 1.05% (interquartile range [IQR], 0.1%-8.70%) to 0.10% ([IQR], 0%-2.28%) at one year and this was maintained out to four-years. Persistent AF burden reduced from 99.9% ([IQR], 51.53%-100%) to 0.30% ([IQR], 0%-77.25%) at one year increasing to 87.3% ([IQR], 4.25%-100%) after four years. If a second ablation was required, point-by-point ablation achieved greater reduction in AF burden (relative risk, 0.77 [95% CI, 0.65-0.91]; P <0.01). CONCLUSION: Ablation reduces AF burden both acutely and in the long-term. If a second ablation was required the point-by-point technique achieved greater reductions in AF burden than "single-shot" technologies. Persistent AF burden increased to near pre ablation levels by year 4 suggesting a different mechanism from PAF patients where this increase did not occur
