The efficacy of special education services for students with learning disabilities: A longitudinal study
The purpose of this study was to examine the achievement of students with specific learning disabilities over a six-year period, from their initial placement in special education until their second triennial evaluation.;The study proposed to look at changes in achievement for the entire sample (n = 103) labeled specific learning disabled, and for three subgroups of this population. The subgroups were: (a) students whose criteria for classification as specific learning disabled included a discrepancy between achievement and their full scale IQ score (n = 74); (b) students whose criteria for classification as specific learning disabled included a discrepancy between achievement and their verbal IQ score (n = 5); and (c) students whose criteria for classification as specific learning disabled included a discrepancy between achievement and their performance IQ score (n = 24). The study also examined relationships between achievement and the following nominal variables: (a) sex, (b) ethnicity, (c) area(s) of academic deficit, (d) type of processing disorder and (e) level of services received.;The major Findings of this study were: (1) The full sample of students with specific learning disabilities made significant gains in achievement over the six-year period of the study. (2) The subgroup of the sample, identified based on a discrepancy between full-scale IQ and achievement, made significant gains in achievement over the six-year period of the study. (3) The subgroup of the sample, identified based on a discrepancy between performance IQ and achievement, did not make significant gains in achievement over the six-year period examined. (4) There were significant differences, in both ability and achievement, between the subgroup identified based on full-scale IQ and the group identified based on performance IQ. The full-scale subgroup scored higher on both measures. (5) There were moderate differences in measured ability levels, and significant differences in measured achievement levels, between males and females in the study. Males scored higher on both measures. (6) There was not a significant relationship between gains in achievement and the nominal variables of sex and ethnicity. (7) There were significant relationships between IQ and achievement, and placement had lower IQ and achievement levels. (8) Black and Hispanic students were overrepresented in the sample whereas Asians were underrepresented. (9) Males were overrepresented in the sample whereas females were underrepresented

Wetting behaviour and reactivity between liquid Gd and ZrO2 substrate
The wetting behavior and reactivity between molten pure Gd and polycrystalline 3YSZ substrate (ZrO2 stabilized with 3 wt% of Y2O3)were experimentally determined by a sessile drop method using a classical contact heating coupled with drop pushing procedure. The test was performed under an inert flowing gas atmosphere (Ar) at two temperatures of 1362°C and 1412°C. Immediately after melting (Tm=1341°C), liquid Gd did not wet the substrate forming a contact angle of θ=141°. The non-wetting to wetting transition (θ < 90°) took place after about 110 seconds of interaction and was accompanied by a sudden decrease in the contact angle value to 67°. Further heating of the couple to 1412 °C did not affect wetting (θ=67°±1°). The solidified Gd/3YSZ couple was studied by means of optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy. Structural investigations revealed that the wettability in the Gd/3YSZ system is of a reactive nature associated with the formation of a continuous layer of a wettable reaction product Gd2Zr2O7
X-ray Nova XTE J1550-564: RXTE Spectral Observations
Excellent coverage of the 1998 outburst of the X-ray Nova XTE J1550-564 was
provided by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. XTE J1550-564 exhibited an intense
(6.8 Crab) flare on 1998 September 19 (UT), making it the brightest new X-ray
source observed with RXTE. We present a spectral analysis utilizing 60
Proportional Counter Array spectra from 2.5-20 keV spanning 71 days, and a
nearly continuous All Sky Monitor light curve. The spectra were fit to a model
including multicolor blackbody disk and power-law components. XTE J1550-564 is
observed in the very high, high/soft, and intermediate canonical outburst

The effect of testing procedure on DSC measurements of Gd-Ti-Zr alloy using ZrO2 container
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was applied to determine the critical temperatures of phase transformations in the Gd40Ti30Zr30 alloy (wt%). The comparative measurements were carried out using three types of measuring devices at a temperature RT- 1650°C in the same flowing gas (Ar, 99.9992%) but applying different testing procedures, which allowed obtaining dissimilar oxygen contents in the surrounding atmosphere. The high temperature interaction and reactivity taking place between molten alloy samples and ZrO2 container during DSC tests were evaluated by structural analysis of the resulting interfaces using alloy samples solidified inside the ZrO2 containers. The conducted research has demonstrated methodological difficulties accompanying measurements of the thermophysical properties of Gd-rich alloys by the container-assisted DSC method, particularly when the tests are performed in flowing argon atmosphere with significantly reduced oxygen content. Under non-oxidizing conditions, the degradation of ZrO2 container can take place during DSC testing because the selected Gd40Ti30Zr30 alloy reacts with the ZrO2 to form a continuous interfacial reaction product layer. Under slightly oxidizing conditions, the gadolinium oxide formed in situ on the alloy surface, plays the role of a barrier for direct contact between molten alloy and container and thus may suppress or even prevent the degradation of the container and its subsequent strong bonding with the holder
An Integration Testing Facility for the CERN Accelerator Controls System
A major effort has been invested in the design, development, and deployment of the LHC Control System. This large control system is made up of a set of core components and dependencies, which although tested individually, are often not able to be tested together on a system capable of representing the complete control system environment, including hardware. Furthermore this control system is being adapted and applied to CERN's whole accelerator complex, and in particular for the forthcoming renovation of the PS accelerators. To ensure quality is maintained as the system evolves, and toimprove defect prevention, the Controls Group launched a project to provide a dedicated facility for continuous, automated, integration testing of its core components to incorporate into its production process. We describe the project, initial lessons from its application, status, and future directions
Complete RXTE Spectral Observations of the Black Hole X-ray Nova XTE J1550-564
We report on the X-ray spectral behavior of the exceptionally bright X-ray
nova XTE J1550-564 during its 1998-99 outburst. Our study is based on 209
pointed observations using the PCA and HEXTE instruments onboard the Rossi
X-ray Timing Explorer spanning 250 days and covering the entire double-peaked
eruption that occurred from 1998 September until 1999 May. The spectra are fit
to a model including multicolor blackbody disk and power-law components. The
source is observed in the very high and high/soft outburst states of black hole
X-ray novae. During the very high state, when the power-law component dominated
the spectrum, the inner disk radius is observed to vary by more than an order
of magnitude; the radius decreased by a factor of 16 in one day during a 6.8
Crab flare. If the larger of these observed radii is taken to be the last
stable orbit, then the smaller observed radius would imply that the inner edge
of the disk is inside the event horizon! However, we conclude that the apparent
variations of the inner disk radius observed during periods of increased
power-law emission are probably caused by the failure of the multicolor
disk/power-law model; the actual physical radius of the inner disk may remain
fairly constant. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the observed
inner disk radius remains approximately constant over 120 days in the high
state, when the power-law component is weak, even though the disk flux and
total flux vary by an order of magnitude. The mass of the black hole inferred
by equating the approximately constant inner disk radius observed in the
high/soft state with the last stable orbit for a Schwarzschild black hole is
M_BH = 7.4 M_sun (D/6 kpc) (cos i)^{-1/2}.Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 20 pages including 6 figures + 4 large table
Wettability and reactivity of ZrB2 substrates with liquid Al
Wetting characteristics of the Al/ZrB2 system were experimentally determined by the sessile drop method with application of separate heating of the ZrB2 and Al samples and combined with in situ cleaning of Al drop from native oxide film directly in vacuum chamber. The tests were performed in ultrahigh vacuum of 10−6 mbar at temperatures 710, 800, and 900 °C as well as in flowing inert gas (Ar) atmosphere at 1400 °C. The results evidenced that liquid Al does not wet ZrB2 substrate at 710 and 800 °C, forming high contact angles (θ) of 128° and 120°, respectively. At 900 °C, wetting phenomenon (θ < 90°) occurs in 29th minute and the contact angle decreases monotonically to the final value of 80°. At 1400 °C, wetting takes place immediately after drop deposition with a fast decrease in the contact angle to 76°. The solidified Al/ZrB2 couples were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy coupled with x-ray energy diffraction spectroscopy. Structural characterization revealed that only in the Al/ZrB2 couple produced at the highest temperature of 1400 °C new phases (Al3Zr, AlB2 and α-Al2O3) were formed
Quantification and reliability of hip internal rotation and the FADIR test in supine position using a smartphone application in an asymptomatic population
Objective: The purpose of this study was to quantify and report the intrarater and interrater reliability of hip internal rotation (IR) range of motion supine with the hip and knee at 90° of flexion and for the flexion-adduction-internal rotation (FADIR) test. Hip internal rotation measured in a lying supine position with the hip and knee at 90° of flexion revealed information on hip impairments. To date no simple quantification approach has been presented in this position; therefore, the FADIR test has not been quantified yet. Methods: Twenty participants (mean ± standard deviation [SD] age, 24.0 ± 2.1 years; 10 women and 10 men) without lower-limb or back pain were recruited. Three raters evaluated each participant during 2 testing sessions, 1 day apart. A built-in smartphone compass application was used to obtain the hip IR range of motion in both procedures. Results: Mean (± SD) supine IR was 51.7° (± 9.7°) and 62.6° (± 11.4°) for men and women, respectively. Concerning the FADIR test, mean values were 41.8° (± 9.64°) and 50.1° (± 8.0°) for men and women, respectively. The mean intrarater and interrater reliability coefficients were 0.80 and 0.72 for hip IR and 0.75 and 0.40 for the FADIR test. The standard error of the mean ranged from 4.8° to 8.3° (minimal detectable difference [MDD], 13.3° to 22.9°) for hip IR and from 4.6° to 10.3° (MDD, 12.8° to 28.6°) for the FADIR test. Conclusion: Overall, the smartphone compass application is adequate to quantify hip IR in a lying supine position. However, the poor to moderate interrater reliability in the FADIR test and the size of the MDD values suggest that the FADIR test should be standardized. © 202
Influence of standardized procedures on the reliability of hip clinical assessment
Objective: This study evaluated a standardized and personalized approach to verify the effects of conditions on intrarater and interrater reliability, standard error of measurement, and minimal detectable difference for provocative tests and range-of-motion (ROM) tests used in hip pain assessment: flexion-adduction-internal rotation (FADIR), flexion-abduction-external rotation-extension (FABER), and hip internal rotation with 90° of hip flexion (hip IR). Methods: Nineteen participants (mean [± SD] age = 24 ± 2 years; 10 women and 9 men) without lower limb or back pain were recruited. Three raters evaluated each participant during 2 testing sessions, 1 day apart. Raters performed the 3 tests in 4 conditions: classic (C), controlled pressure duration (CPD), subject-specific position (SSP), and mixed (M = CPD + SSP). Results: For intrarater reliability, the CPD condition showed the highest intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs; mean and 95% confidence interval [CI]) for hip IRROM (0.83; 95% CI, 0.53-0.94) and FADIRROM (0.75; 95% CI, 0.60-0.89). The SSP condition showed the highest ICCs for FABERheight (0.71; 95% CI, 0.42-0.87) and FABERROM (0.62; 95% CI, 0.27-0.83). Concerning interrater reliability, the classic condition presented the highest ICCs for FABER variables (height: 0.54; 95% CI, 0.28-0.76; ROM: 0.58; 95% CI, 0.32-0.79) and hip IR ROM (0.72; 95% CI, 0.51-0.87). The CPD condition showed the highest ICC for FADIRROM (0.57; 95% CI, 0.32-0.78). Conclusion: In the conditions of this study, CPD showed the highest ICCs for hip IRROM and FADIRROM, and SSP showed the highest ICCs for FABERheight and FABERROM. © 202
