Breast cancer image classification using pattern-based Hyper Conceptual Sampling method
The increase in biomedical data has given rise to the need for developing data sampling techniques. With the emergence of big data and the rise of popularity of data science, sampling or reduction techniques have been assistive to significantly hasten the data analytics process. Intuitively, without sampling techniques, it would be difficult to efficiently extract useful patterns from a large dataset. However, by using sampling techniques, data analysis can effectively be performed on huge datasets, to produce a relatively small portion of data, which extracts the most representative objects from the original dataset. However, to reach effective conclusions and predictions, the samples should preserve the data behavior. In this paper, we propose a unique data sampling technique which exploits the notion of formal concept analysis. Machine learning experiments are performed on the resulting sample to evaluate quality, and the performance of our method is compared with another sampling technique proposed in the literature. Impact of Augmented Reality on Pattern Designing Using Origami-Style among Clothing and Textile Students
The study aimed to examine the effects of augmented reality technology on the development of origami-style pattern designing skills among female students in the clothing and textile field, as well as to explore their attitudes towards this technology. The quasi-experimental approach was employed to achieve the research objectives, with a sample of 24 female students from the Fourth Grade of the Department of Clothing and Textile, Faculty of Home Economics at Al-Azhar University. The participants were divided into two groups: a control group of 12 students who studied in the traditional way, and an experimental group of 12 students who used augmented reality technology to learn. The study was conducted in the second semester of the academic year 2020/2021. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference (at a significance level of 0.01) between the average scores of the control group and the experimental group in both cognitive achievement and skill performance, with the experimental group performing better. Additionally, the retention of learned information was higher among the experimental group, and they had a more positive attitude towards using augmented reality technology in learning
Development of an LC-MS Method for Measuring TNF in Human Vaginal Tissue
A sensitive, accurate, and precise liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry assay for the determination of tenofovir (TNF) in human vaginal tissue was developed and validated. After homogenization of the tissue, solid-phase extraction on Varian Bond Elut-C18 column was used for sample clean up. Chromatographic separation of TNF and the internal standard (tolbutamide) was achieved with a Varian Polaris 3C18-A reversed-phase analytical column (150 mm × 2 mm). A gradient method using 0.1% formic acid in water and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile was employed. Detection of TNF and tolbutamide was achieved by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in the positive ion mode using 288.05 and 271.00 m/z, respectively. Linear TNF calibration curves were obtained between 1–1,000 ng/mL with a correlation coefficient (r2) greater than 0.999. Intra-and inter-day accuracy for TNF ranged from 89.7% and 109.4% and from 97.3% and 104.9%, and precision ranged from 1.3% and 10.9% and 2.6% and 9.0%, respectively. This is the first validated method developed to quantitate TNF in human tissues
The complementary role of histology and proteomics for diagnosis and typing of systemic amyloidosis
The tissue diagnosis of amyloidosis and confirmation of fibril protein type, which are crucial for clinical management, have traditionally relied on Congo red (CR) staining followed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using fibril protein specific antibodies. However, amyloid IHC is qualitative, non-standardised, requires operator expertise, and not infrequently fails to produce definitive results. More recently, laser dissection mass spectrometry (LDMS) has been developed as an alternative method to characterise amyloid in tissue sections. We sought to compare these techniques in a real world setting. During 2017, we performed LDMS on 640 formalin-fixed biopsies containing amyloid (CR+ve) comprising all 320 cases that could not be typed by IHC (IHC−ve) and 320 randomly selected CR+ve samples that had been typed (IHC+ve). In addition, we studied 60 biopsies from patients in whom there was a strong suspicion of amyloidosis, but in whom histology was non-diagnostic (CR–ve). Comprehensive clinical assessments were conducted in 532 (76%) of cases. Among the 640 CR+ve samples, 602 (94%) contained ≥2 of 3 amyloid signature proteins (ASPs) on LDMS (ASP+ve) supporting the presence of amyloid. A total of 49 of the 60 CR-ve samples were ASP–ve; 7 of 11 that were ASP+ve were glomerular. The amyloid fibril protein was identified by LDMS in 255 of 320 (80%) of the IHC–ve samples and in a total of 545 of 640 (85%) cases overall. The LDMS and IHC techniques yielded discordant results in only 7 of 320 (2%) cases. CR histology and LDMS are corroborative for diagnosis of amyloid, but LDMS is superior to IHC for confirming amyloid type
Diagnosis, pathogenesis and outcome in leucocyte chemotactic factor 2 (ALECT2) amyloidosis
Introduction:
Renal biopsy series from North America suggest that leucocyte chemotactic factor 2 (ALECT2) amyloid is the third most common type of renal amyloid. We report the first case series from a European Centre of prevalence, clinical presentation and diagnostic findings in ALECT2 amyloidosis and report long-term patient and renal outcomes for the first time.
Methods:
We studied the clinical features, diagnostic investigations and the outcome of all patients with ALECT2 amyloidosis followed systematically at the UK National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC) between 1994 and 2015.
Results:
Twenty-four patients, all non-Caucasian, were diagnosed with ALECT2 amyloidosis representing 1.3% of all patients referred to the NAC with biopsy-proved renal amyloid. Diagnosis was made at median age of 62 years, usually from renal histology; immunohistochemical staining was definitive for ALECT2 fibril type. Median estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) at diagnosis was 33 mL/min/1.73 m2 and median proteinuria was 0.5 g/24 h. Hepatic amyloid was evident on serum amyloid P component (SAP) scintigraphy in 11/24 cases but was not associated with significant derangement of liver function. No patient had evidence of cardiac amyloidosis or amyloid neuropathy. Median follow-up was 4.8 (range 0.5–15.2) years, during which four patients died and four progressed to end-stage renal disease. The mean rate of GFR loss was 4.2 (range 0.5–9.6) mL/min/year and median estimated renal survival from diagnosis was 8.2 years. Serial SAP scans revealed little or no change in total body amyloid burden.
Conclusions:
ALECT2 amyloidosis is a relatively benign type of renal amyloid, associated with a slow GFR decline, which is reliably diagnosed on renal histology. Neither the molecular basis nor the factors underlying the apparent restriction of ALECT2 amyloidosis to non-Caucasian populations have been determined
Diagnostic sensitivity of abdominal fat aspiration in cardiac amyloidosis
Aims:
Congo red staining of an endomyocardial biopsy is the diagnostic gold-standard in suspected cardiac amyloidosis (CA), but the procedure is associated with the risk, albeit small, of serious complications, and delay in diagnosis due to the requirement for technical expertise. In contrast, abdominal fat pad fine needle aspiration (FPFNA) is a simple, safe and well-established procedure in systemic amyloidosis, but its diagnostic sensitivity in patients with suspected CA remains unclear.
Methods and results:
We assessed the diagnostic sensitivity of FPFNA in 600 consecutive patients diagnosed with CA [216 AL amyloidosis, 113 hereditary transthyretin (ATTRm), and 271 wild-type transthyretin (ATTRwt) amyloidosis] at our Centre. Amyloid was detected on Congo red staining of FPFNAs in 181/216 (84%) patients with cardiac AL amyloidosis, including 100, 97, and 78% of those with a large, moderate, and small whole-body amyloid burden, respectively, as assessed by serum amyloid P (SAP) component scintigraphy (P < 0.001); the deposits were successfully typed as AL by immunohistochemistry in 102/216 (47%) cases. Amyloid was detected in FPFNAs of 51/113 (45%) patients with ATTRm CA, and only 42/271 (15%) cases with ATTRwt CA.
Conclusions:
FPFNA has reasonable diagnostic sensitivity in cardiac AL amyloidosis, particularly in patients with a large whole-body amyloid burden. Although the diagnostic sensitivity of FPFNA is substantially lower in transthyretin CA, particularly ATTRwt, it may nevertheless sometimes obviate the need for endomyocardial biopsy
Mutual Relationships: Saudi Universities and The Private Sector for Economic Development
The purpose of this research is to determine the level of the mutual relationship between Saudi universities and the private sector to achieve Economic development in light of the Kingdoms 2030 vision. The researcher relied heavily on the questionnaire as the primary instrument for data collection for the study, employing a descriptive research design and a quantitative methodology in order to accomplish the goals of the study. The investigation was carried out with a sample size of 180 universities leaders in the southern region of Saudi Arabia, all of them were chosen at random. The findings of this study indicated that leaders had high expectations for a mutual relationship between Saudi universities and the private sector. In addition, the findings demonstrated that there are no statistically significant variations in the mutual relationship between Saudi universities and the private sector with regard to the variables of academic rank, and years of experience
Biochar a promising amendment to mitigate the drought stress in plants: review and future prospective
Drought stress (DS) is one of the most destructive abiotic stresses that negatively affects plant growth, and yield. The intensity of DS is continuously increasing due rapid of water sources, less rainfall, and an increase in global warming. The world’s population is increasing at an alarming rate which needs a substantial increase in crop production to meet global food needs. Therefore, in this context, we must have to increase crop production in the scenarios of rapid climate change and increasing intensity of abiotic stresses. Globally, different measures are used to mitigate the adverse impacts of DS, recently biochar (BC) has emerged as an excellent soil amendment to mitigate the toxic effects of DS and improve crop production. The application maintains membrane integrity, plant water relations, nutrient homeostasis, photosynthetic performance, hormonal balance and osmolytes accumulation, and gene expression thereby improving plant performance under DS. Moreover, BC application under DS also improves soil organic matter, water holding capacity, soil structure stability, and activity of beneficial microbes which can improve the plant performance under DS. In the present review different mechanisms through which BC mitigates the adverse impacts of DS on plants are discussed.
