    Resistive relaxation in field-induced insulator-metal transition of a (La0.4_{0.4}Pr0.6_{0.6})1.2_{1.2}Sr1.8_{1.8}Mn2_{2}O7_{7} bilayer manganite single crystal

    We have investigated the resistive relaxation of a (La0.4_{0.4}Pr0.6_{0.6})1.2_{1.2}Sr1.8_{1.8}Mn2_{2}O7_{7} single crystal, in order to examine the slow dynamics of the field-induced insulator to metal transition of bilayered manganites. The temporal profiles observed in remanent resistance follow a stretched exponential function accompanied by a slow relaxation similar to that obtained in magnetization and magnetostriction data. We demonstrate that the remanent relaxation in magnetotransport has a close relationship with magnetic relaxation that can be understood in the framework of an effective medium approximation by assuming that the first order parameter is proportional to the second order one.Comment: 6 pages,5 figure

    Brain amyloid in preclinical Alzheimer\u27s disease is associated with increased driving risk

    INTRODUCTION: Postmortem studies suggest that fibrillar brain amyloid places people at higher risk for hazardous driving in the preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: We administered driving questionnaires to 104 older drivers (19 AD, 24 mild cognitive impairment, and 61 cognitive normal) who had a recent (18)F-florbetapir positron emission tomography scan. We examined associations of amyloid standardized uptake value ratios with driving behaviors: traffic violations or accidents in the past 3 years. RESULTS: The frequency of violations or accidents was curvilinear with respect to standardized uptake value ratios, peaking around a value of 1.1 (model r(2) = 0.10, P = .002); moreover, this relationship was evident for the cognitively normal participants. DISCUSSION: We found that driving risk is strongly related to accumulating amyloid on positron emission tomography, and that this trend is evident in the preclinical stage of AD. Brain amyloid burden may in part explain the increased crash risk reported in older adults

    Potassium and magnesium uptake and fertiliser use efficiency by oil palm at contrasting sites in Sumatra, Indonesia

    The accuracy of fertiliser recommendations can be improved by knowledge of use efficiency of applied nutrients. The aim of this work was to determine the efficiency with which mature oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) recovers and uses fertiliser K and Mg under different environmental conditions in Sumatra, Indonesia. The work was carried out in seven factorial fertiliser trials (NPKMg) at sites with contrasting soils, slope and rainfall (1500–3500 mm annual average). We recorded the palms’ fresh fruit bunch yield (weekly), vegetative growth and nutrient content (annually), and soil properties (onceduring the study) over three years. Nutrient contentof the above-ground palm components was calculated by multiplying concentration by biomass. Palm responses to K and Mg application were analysed at non-limiting values of the other nutrients. Fresh fruit bunch yield was significantly increased by application of K in five of the seven sites (by 4.8–11.9 t ha−1) and by Mg in two of the seven sites (by 7.2–12.3 t ha−1). Application of these fertilisers also significantly increased growth and nutrient content in most situations. Nutrient use efficiency declined with increasing yield and nutrient uptake. In the five sites with most positive yield responses to K, agronomic efficiency of K and Mg differed between sites due to differences in recovery efficiency. Recovery efficiency was correlated positively to soil K, Mg and silt content and rainfall, and negatively to slope and soil moisture deficit. In contrast, physiological efficiency of K and Mg use was similar across sites, despite differences in palm age and planting density. It thus appeared that physiological efficiency was determined by genotype and that variation in agronomic efficiency was mostly a result of differences in recovery efficiency

    Staying out of range: increasing attacking distance in fencing

    To avoid being hit, fencers typically adopt an out of range position, which was hypothesized to be governed by body- and action-scaled affordances. This theory was measured in elite and national level junior (u20) fencers. Associations between “reachability” of lunging and step-lunging attacks, was assessed against height, arm-span, leg-span, body mass and lower-body power, and then compared across level. Reachability was determined as the distance covered by fencers during these attacks and was reported as actual and estimated distances. Elite fencers are better at estimating their lunging and step-lunge distance compared to national ranked junior fencers (-0.9 vs. 7.3 % and 5.4 vs. 10.9 % respectively). Surprisingly, elite fencers’ actual and estimated distances for these was less than the junior fencers’ (222.6 vs. 251.5 cm and 299.3 vs. 360.2 cm respectively), and significantly so in the former. Finally only arm (r = .81) and leg span (r = .71) were significantly correlated to estimated lunging distance and this was only in elite fencers. Findings suggest that better fencers can accurately predict their attack range and that reachability appears to be positively influenced by arm and leg-span; these may feed in to talent identification. Given that distances were less in elite fencers, findings suggests that timing and distance estimation are key skills to master, and that the mastery of these in offensive actions can mitigate to a large extent, the physical benefits of an opponent’s greater height

    Screening for Latent Tuberculosis Infection among Students of Healthcare Professions and Postgraduates of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Palermo

    Introduction and objective: Italy is a country with a low incidence of tuberculosis and in the last fifty years the annual number of TB cases decreased from 12,247 to 4,418, showing a reduction of approximately 64% in the number of cases and 71% in incidence. Despite of this encouraging trend, in the last years the epidemiology of tuberculosis changed and today it is a re-emerging infectious. The aim of this study is to measure the prevalence of positivity to tuberculosis infection (latent TB) in students, without any obvious manifestation of disease, attending degree courses of the health care professions and postgraduate medical courses of the School of Medicine of the University of Palermo, Italy. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional observational study in students of nursing, midwifery, dentistry degree courses and in resident physicians of postgraduate medical schools was carried out from January 2012 to July 2016. Mantoux test was performed and all positive cases were tested with Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA). Results: Of the 1,351 subjects evaluated, 25 (1.8%) resulted positive to Mantoux test; in 17 students (1.2%) the diagnosis was confirmed with IGRA. Positive cases were significantly more frequent among students attending Postgraduated Medical School Courses (p<0.001) and were older than negative cases (p<0.001). Conclusion: This study suggests that in our geographic area, latent TB shows a relatively low prevalence among students of medical schools. Despite of this evidence, and considering that several students have been found to be positive for TB, this infectious disease has to be considered a re-emerging biohazard that requires preventive strategies for the containment of the risk in exposed workers as well as in the general population

    Emerging biomarkers and metabolomics for assessing toxic nephropathy and acute kidney injury (AKI) in neonatology

    Identification of novel drug-induced toxic nephropathy and acute kidney injury (AKI) biomarkers has been designated as a top priority by the American Society of Nephrology. Increasing knowledge in the science of biology and medicine is leading to the discovery of still more new biomarkers and of their roles in molecular pathways triggered by physiological and pathological conditions. Concomitantly, the development of the so-called “omics” allows the progressive clinical utilization of a multitude of information, from those related to the human genome (genomics) and proteome (proteomics), including the emerging epigenomics, to those related to metabolites (metabolomics). In preterm newborns, one of the most important factors causing the pathogenesis and the progression of AKI is the interaction between the individual genetic code, the environment, the gestational age, and the disease. By analyzing a small urine sample, metabolomics allows to identify instantly any change in phenotype, including changes due to genetic modifications. The role of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and other emerging technologies is strategic, contributing basically to the sudden development of new biochemical and molecular tests. Urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) are closely correlated with the severity of kidney injury, representing noninvasive sensitive surrogate biomarkers for diagnosing, monitoring, and quantifying kidney damage. To become routine tests, uNGAL and KIM-1 should be carefully tested in multicenter clinical trials and should be measured in biological fluids by robust, standardized analytical methods

    In-plane thermal conductivity of large single crystals of Sm-substituted (Y1x_{1-x}Smx_{x})Ba2_{2}Cu3_{3}O7δ_{7-\delta}

    We have investigated the in-plane thermal conductivity κab(T,H)\kappa_{ab}(T,H) of large single crystals of optimally oxygen-doped (Y1x_{1-x},Smx_{x})Ba2_{2}Cu3_{3}O7δ_{7-\delta} (xx=0, 0.1, 0.2 and 1.0) and YBa2_{2}(Cu1y_{1-y}Zny_{y})3_{3}O7δ_{7-\delta}(yy=0.0071) as functions of temperature and magnetic field (along the c axis). For comparison, the temperature dependence of κab\kappa_{ab} for as-grown crystals with the corresponding compositions are presented. The nonlinear field dependence of κab\kappa_{ab} for all crystals was observed at relatively low fields near a half of TcT_{c}. We make fits of the κ(H)\kappa(H) data to an electron contribution model, providing both the mean free path of quasiparticles 0\ell_{0} and the electronic thermal conductivity κe\kappa_{e}, in the absence of field. The local lattice distortion due to the Sm substitution for Y suppresses both the phonon and electron contributions. On the other hand, the light Zn doping into the CuO 2_{2} planes affects solely the electron component below TcT_{c}, resulting in a substantial decrease in 0\ell_{0} .Comment: 7 pages,4 figures,1 tabl
