    Chlorella vulgaris modulates hydrogen peroxide-induced dna damage and telomere shortening of human fibroblasts derived from different aged individuals

    The objective of this study was to investigate the modulatory effect of Chlorella vulgaris on cultured fibroblast cells derived from young and old aged individuals focusing on DNA damage, telomere length and telomerase activity. Dose-response test of the algal extract on cells in both age groups revealed that optimum viability was observed at a concentration of 50 μg/ml. Results obtained showed that Chlorella vulgaris exhibited protective effects against H2O2-induced oxidative stress as shown by the reduction in damaged DNA caused by H2O2 treatment (

    A Prospective Cohort Study on IRS Gene Polymorphisms in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients during Severe/Acute Hyperglycemia Phase 1: Association with Insulin Resistance

    Purpose: To investigate the genetic polymorphisms that may contribute to the worsening of insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with severe or acute hyperglycemia.Methods: This is a prospective cohort study involving 156 T2DM patients with severe or acute hyperglycemia from all medical wards of the National University of Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) that were placed on insulin therapy. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used to determine the genetic association of insulin receptor substrate (IRS) gene with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance status was determined using the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index.Results: IRS1 polymorphisms were associated with increased insulin resistance (X2 = 5.09, p = 0.023) in T2DM patients with severe/acute hyperglycemia. IRS2 polymorphisms were not associated with insulin resistance (X2 = 0.69, p = 0.406) in this group of patients.Conclusion: IRS1 genetic factor alone may be a significant genetic determinant for insulin resistance in T2DM patients during severe/acute phase hyperglycemia.Keywords: Insulin receptor substrate, Genetic, Polymorphism, Diabetes, Insulin resistance, Hyperglycemia, IRS1, IRS

    An active downlink photonic antenna

    This paper presents an active photonic antenna concept whereby an interface circuit is introduced in order to integrate the antenna with the photodiode. The operating frequencies ranges are 1.8 to 3.5 GHz which support the GSM 1800, WLAN and WiMAX applications. The simulated and measured results of interface circuit and antenna are presented. Thus, the photonic antenna is developed by integrating photodiode, interface circuit, RF amplifier and printed antenna and fabricated on FR4 board.     A versatile source of polarisation entangled photons for quantum network applications

    We report a versatile and practical approach for generating high-quality polarization entanglement in a fully guided-wave fashion. Our setup relies on a high-brilliance type-0 waveguide generator producing paired photon at a telecom wavelength associated with an advanced energy-time to polarisation transcriber. The latter is capable of creating any pure polarization entangled state, and allows manipulating single photon bandwidths that can be chosen at will over five orders of magnitude, ranging from tens of MHz to several THz. We achieve excellent entanglement fidelities for particular spectral bandwidths, i.e. 25 MHz, 540 MHz and 100 GHz, proving the relevance of our approach. Our scheme stands as an ideal candidate for a wide range of network applications, ranging from dense division multiplexing quantum key distribution to heralded optical quantum memories and repeaters.Comment: 5 figure

    Cytotoxicity and Antioxidant Activity of Zingiber Officinale and 6-Gingerol on HepG2 Cells

    The present study was designed to compare the effects of ethanolic extract of ginger (Zingiber officinale) and its phenolic component [6]-Gingerol on viability, antiproliferation and apoptotic levels of human hepatoma cell lines (HepG2) and its antioxidant activity. HepG2 cells were cultured in Eagles minimum essential medium (EMEM) and the percentage of cell cytotoxicity was evaluated by tetrazolium salt (MTS) assay. Antiproliferation and apoptotic levels were measured by 5Bromo-2deoxyuridine (BrdU) colorimetry. Antioxidant capacity was studied by 1.1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl radical (DPPH) using spectrophotometry. We found that cytotoxicity and antiproliferative effect of ginger extract and [6]-Gingerol could be associated with induction of apoptosis. The ginger ethanol extract and [6]-Gingerol also showed remarkable antioxidant activities in comparison with ascorbic acid and N-acetyl-L-cysteine

    Accuracy of saline infusion sonography versus hysteroscopy in the evaluation of uterine cavity abnormalities in infertile women at CHRACERH, Yaounde, Cameroon

    Background: Uterine cavity abnormalities are seen as a cause of infertility in around 10%-15% and can go up to 50% in women with recurrent implantation failure. Saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS) is a minimally invasive diagnostic modality in the evaluation but hysteroscopy remains the gold standard in the assessment of intra uterine cavity. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of saline infusion sonography (SIS) considering hysteroscopy (HS) as the gold standard to evaluate uterine cavity pathologies in infertile women at CHRACERH.Methods: Authors carried out a cross-sectional, retrospective study, over 2 years, from the 1st January 2016 to the 31st December 2017, with retrospective data collection in 110 records of infertile patients subjected to an ultrasound assessment of uterine cavity using saline as the contrast medium with a 6.5-MHz transvaginal transducer. When SIS found intra uterine abnormality, HS was done on a later date, using a 5 mm Bettocchi hysteroscope. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive and negative predictive values of SIS and HS were compared using the SPSS 20 software.Results: The mean age and body mass index were respectively 39.3±7.8 years and 28.7±4.1 kg/m². The main findings both in SIS and Hysteroscopy were respectively polyps (n=61; 55.5% vs 52.7%; n=58), myomas (n=43; 39.1% vs 31.8%; n=35), intrauterine adhesions (n=18; 16.4% vs 21.8%; n=24). The overall sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of SIS were 81.2%, 86.9% and 86.5% respectively.Conclusions: SIS as a diagnostic tool in the evaluation of intrauterine lesions has a good accuracy and can therefore replace HS when this later is not available, especially in our African setting

    High-quality polarization entanglement state preparation and manipulation in standard telecommunication channels

    We report a novel and simple approach for generating near-perfect quality polarization entanglement in a fully guided-wave fashion. Both deterministic pair separation into two adjacent telecommunication channels and the paired photons' temporal walk-off compensation are achieved using standard fiber components. Two-photon interference experiments are performed, both for quantitatively demonstrating the relevance of our approach, and for manipulating the produced state between bosonic and fermionic symmetries. The compactness, versatility, and reliability of this configuration makes it a potential candidate for quantum communication applications.Comment: 6 figure
