    Left ventricular apical hypoplasia: Case report on cardiomyopathy and a history of sudden cardiac death

    BACKGROUND: Isolated left ventricular apical hypoplasia with several different unrecognized dimensions is a newly discovered congenital anomaly of the heart. CASE REPORT: In this report, we describe a case of cardiomyopathy of this type occurring in a 13-year-old male with a history of mental retardation and sudden cardiac death (SCD) of second-degree relatives. The patient was referred for an evaluation of cardiac status. An echocardiography analysis demonstrated a spherical left ventricle (LV) appearance with mild mitral regurgitation. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed a spherical and truncated LV appearance. The right ventricle was found to have elongated and wrapped around the LV, and diverticulum was also seen in the cardiac MRI.CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is to present the first case of LV apical hypoplasia combined with LV diverticulum and a family history of SCD. As more cases featuring this cardiomyopathy type are recognized, it will be easier to elucidate the natural history and management of such cardiac anomalies. © 2016, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS). Social networks as one of the most important and widely in cyberspace which is Used by many people in various fields. application of social network by students as young and educated population is important.In this regard, this study aimed to investigate and identify the opportunities and threats for shahid Beheshti University students in social network. This study aims to develop a practical and descriptive methodology. Information obtained from the questionnaires using SPSS statistical analysis software in two parts: descriptive and inferential statistics were analyzed.The results indicate that five variables related to social networking opportunities, including e-learning, leisure, organized social groups, the possibility of dialogue and culture, as well as five variables related to social networking threats, including transfer value unethical, abusive, spreading false information, internet & Communications destructive addiction, has a significant positive effect on students

    Synthesis and Characterization of Silicate Calcium Phosphate Bioactive Glass Prepared by Electrospinning Method

    Ternary (%mol) (64SiO2-31CaO-5P2O5) system of sol-gel derived bioactive glass fibers was prepared by electrospinning method. X-ray Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption test (BET) analyses were performed to investigate the phase and chemical group of the composition, morphology of the surface and specific surface area of the fibers, respectively. SEM observations confirmed that the fibers were nano size. The amorphous nature and the presence of silanol groups in the composition were confirmed by XRD and FTIR, respectively. Apatite formation and biodegradability of the fibers were studied using various analyses after different days of soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF). The results affirmed the presence of apatite layers on the surface of the fibers. Cell culture evaluation indicated that MG-64 human osteoblast-like cells were attached and spread well on the surface. Furthermore, cell viability and cell growth demonstrated that the cells were grown and reproduced well on the fibers

    Detection and qualification of optimum antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of silver-doped bioactive glasses

    This study aims to detect the optimum antibacterial activity of silver-doped bioactive glasses (Ag-BGs) for prevention of post-transplant infections in tissue engineering. The results have shown that the Ag-BG samples had broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy in an Ag concentration-dependent manner. The 2 Ag-BG had the highest effect during the first 10 min to 72 h. The minimum inhibitory concentration of 2 Ag-BG was estimated to be 2 mg/ml for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and 2.66 mg/ml for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). A concentration of 0.5 Ag-BG repressed growth of E. coli after 1 h, but did not have any detectable antibacterial effect for longer periods. Evaluation of the effects of prepared Ag-BG on human osteoblast cells viability showed that 1 and 2 samples changed the cell proliferation rate in masses of more than 3.33 and 2 mg/ml, respectively. Moreover, in a typical manner, the release of Ag ions from the glass structure started immediately, continued steadily and affected bacterial growth when it reached its critical concentration in the medium. This systematic study can illustrate the optimum antibacterial property of the Ag-BG samples in masses of 3.33 and 2 mg/ml for 1 and 2 Ag, respectively, for prevention of post-transplant infections. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2015

    Effect of molybdophosphoric acid in iron and cobalt graphene/chitosan composites for oxygen reduction reaction

    Iron and cobalt materials have attracted enormous interest as low-cost alternatives to noble-metal catalysts able to catalyse oxygen reduction reaction. Here, the effect of the heteropolyacid H3PMo12O40 (HPMo) into the structure of new composites formed by Fe, Co and reduced-graphene oxide/chitosan (rGOCS) has been investigated. Chitosan was used as a nitrogen precursor for nanocarbon, while reduced graphene oxide was introduced to tune the electrical conductivity. The physicochemical properties of electrocatalysts were performed by Raman, XRD, XPS and TEM. Activity toward ORR was carried out in a three-electrode electrochemical cell using a rotating disk electrode (RDE). The molybdophosphoric acid incorporation into the structure of Fe/rGOCS composites resulted in an increase of the activity of the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline medium. Furthermore, the replacement of iron by cobalt yielded in a great improvement of the activity and stability, which may open new avenues for the design of nanomaterials utilizing HPMo/reduced-graphene oxide/chitosan composites.This work was supported by the Spanish Government under the MINECO projectENE2014-52158-C2-1R (co-funded by FEDER), Spanish National Research CouncilCOOPB20202 and MERC project721394002.
