    H-alpha observations of the gamma-ray-emitting Be/X-ray binary LSI+61303: orbital modulation, disk truncation, and long-term variability

    We report 138 spectral observations of the H-alpha emission line of the radio- and gamma-ray-emitting Be/X-ray binary LSI+61303 obtained during the period of September 1998 -- January 2013. From measuring various H-alpha parameters, we found that the orbital modulation of the H-alpha is best visible in the equivalent width ratio EW(B)/EW(R), the equivalent width of the blue hump, and in the radial velocity of the central dip. The periodogram analysis confirmed that the H-alpha emission is modulated with the orbital and superorbital periods. For the past 20 years the radius of the circumstellar disk is similar to the Roche lobe size at the periastron. It is probably truncated by a 6:1 resonance. The orbital maximum of the equivalent width of H-alpha emission peaks after the periastron and coincides on average with the X-ray and gamma-ray maxima.     We study the evolution of magnetized and rigidly rotating neutron stars within a fully general relativistic implementation of ideal magnetohydrodynamics with no assumed symmetries in three spatial dimensions. The stars are modeled as rotating, magnetized polytropic stars and we examine diverse scenarios to study their dynamics and stability properties. In particular we concentrate on the stability of the stars and possible critical behavior. In addition to their intrinsic physical significance, we use these evolutions as further tests of our implementation which incorporates new developments to handle magnetized systems.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    A Search for Very Active Stars in the Galaxy

    We report the first results of a systematic search near the plane of the Galaxy for the so called very active stars (VAS), which are characterized by a hard X-ray spectrum and activity in the radio domain. Candidates with hard X-ray binary-like spectra have been selected from the Bright ROSAT Source Catalogue in the Zone of Avoidance (b<20o| b | < 20{^o}) and were tentatively identified in GB6/PMM/NVSS radio surveys. Most of them were observed with the ATCA and VLA. Precise radio coordinates have led to unambiguous optical identification for 60 candidates, and a sub-sample of five of themhas been observed with the VLT. Also some discovery and confirmatory spectra were obtained with the AAT (4-m) and BTA (6-m). Spectroscopy with moderate dispersion, made with the FORS1 spectrograph of the VLT has revealed two stellar objects (one of them, VASC J1628-41, is definitivelya binary VAS), one new AGN and two featureless spectrum sources. One of these objects, VASC J1353-66, shows a marginal evidence of proper motion, which, if confirmed, would imply the discovery of a new type of galactic source.Comment: to appear in A&A, 7 figure

    Anomalous thermal expansion and strong damping of the thermal conductivity of NdMnO3_3 and TbMnO3_3 due to 4f crystal-field excitations

    We present measurements of the thermal conductivity κ\kappa and the thermal expansion α\alpha of NdMnO3_3 and TbMnO3_3. In both compounds a splitting of the 4f4f multiplet of the R3+R^{3+} ion causes Schottky contributions to α\alpha. In TbMnO3_3 this contribution arises from a crystal-field splitting, while in NdMnO3_3 it is due to the Nd-Mn exchange coupling. Another consequence of this coupling is a strongly enhanced canting of the Mn moments. The thermal conductivity is greatly suppressed in both compounds. The main scattering process at low temperatures is resonant scattering of phonons between different energy levels of the 4f4f multiplets, whereas the complex 3d magnetism of the Mn ions is of minor importance.Comment: 9 pages including 6 figure
