    Multiscale interaction with topography and extreme rainfall events in the northeast Indian region

    Flash floods associated with extreme rain events are a major hydrological disaster in the northeast Indian (NEI) region because of the unique topographic features of the region as well as increased frequency of occurrence of such events. Knowledge of the spatiotemporal distribution of these events in the region and an understanding of the factors responsible for them, therefore, would be immensely useful for appropriate disaster preparedness. Using daily rainfall data from 15 stations over the region for 32 years (1975-2006), it is shown that the frequency of occurrence of these events is largest not during the premonsoon thunderstorm season but during the peak monsoon months (June-July-August). This fact together with the fact that most of these events occur during long rainy spells indicate that the extreme events in the NEI region largely occur in association with the monsoon synoptic events rather than isolated thunderstorms. We also find that the aggregate of extreme rain events over the region has a significant decreasing trend in contrast to a recent finding of an increasing trend of such events in central India (Goswami et al., 2006). This decreasing trend of extreme events is consistent with observed decreasing trend in convective available potential energy and increasing convective inhibition energy over the region for the mentioned period. Examination of the structure of convection associated with the extreme rain events in the region indicates that they occur through a multiscale interaction of circulation with the local topography. It is found that at all the stations, the events are associated with a mesoscale structure of convection that is embedded in a much larger scale convective organization. We identify that this large-scale organization is a manifestation of certain phases of the tropical convergence zone associated with the northward propagating active-break phases of the summer monsoon intraseasonal oscillation. Further, it is shown that the mesoscale circulation interacting with the local topography generates southward propagating gravity waves with diurnal period. The strong updrafts associated with the gravity waves within the mesoscale organization leads to very deep convective events and the extreme rainfall. The insights provided by our study would be useful when designing models to improve the prediction of extreme events

    Indian Forage Scenario – Region Wise Availability and Deficit

    In India, rapid urbanisation, changing food habit and higher purchasing power have increased the demand for animal based food products.Proper feeding strategies using green nutritious fodderis key to increase livestock production and productivity in economical and sustainable way.Three major sources of fodder are crop residues, cultivated fodder from arable land (irrigated and rainfed) and fodder from common property resources like forests, permanent pastures, grazing lands, cultivated wasteland, fallow lands etc. Based on the livestock census, we estimated the green and dry fodder availability vis-a-vis demand and emerging deficit/surplus situation. The state wise livestock population for Cattle, Buffaloes, Goat, Sheep, Yak and Mithun were taken into account and the requirement for green, dry forage and animal feed concentrate was worked out considering factors like age, milking or non-milking state, gender, working nature, feeding practices etc. The availability of green forages was estimated based on cultivated area under forage, cropping intensity, productivity etc., green fodder from fallow land, wasteland, forest fringe areas, social forestry, pasture land. For dry fodder, availability of crop residue for fodder was calculated based on the major utilizable cereals, pulses and oilseed crops, harvest index, production, and utilization pattern. Availability of dry forages from forest, wasteland, fallow land and cultivated field after harvest available for grazing were considered. On all India basis, there is an overall deficit of nearly 11 % in green fodder availability and 23 % in dry fodder availability. To meet the deficit scenario various strategies are proposed which includea national programme in mission mode for accelerating production; grassland and grazing policy; rejuvenation of degraded pastures; targeted research and extension programme; entrepreneurship in commercial venture of fodder production and utilization

    Therapeutic efficacy of anti-malarials in Plasmodium falciparum malaria in an Indo-Myanmar border area of Arunachal Pradesh

    Background & objectives: Malaria is one of the major public health problems in the north eastern region of India. Antimalarial drug resistance is widespread and one of the important causes of recent resurgence of falciparum malaria in this region. Antimalarial drugs are seen to be used sequentially one after another in many areas of the region, when therapeutic failure is observed with a drug. In view of this, the present study was undertaken to assess the therapeutic efficacy of common antimalarial drugs viz., chloroquine, sulfadoxine+pyrimethamine (S-P) and quinine, administered sequentially to the patients with Plasmodium falciparum infection in a Myanmar bordering area of Arunachal Pradesh. Methods: A hospital based in vivo study was carried out with 53 patients with uncomplicated falciparum malaria. All patients were first treated with chloroquine and therapeutic efficacy assessed. In case of therapeutic failure of chloroquine combination drug (S-P) was given and those showing failure with S-P combination, oral quinine was administered and followed up for 28 days to assess both clinical and parasitological responses. Results: Therapeutic failure was observed with chloroquine in 83.1 per cent (44 of 53) and to both chloroquine and S-P combination drug in 44.1 per cent (19/43) patients. Further, 15.8 per cent patients (3 of 19) failed to respond even to quinine. Overall, 5.7 per cent patients (3 of 53) showed unresponsiveness to all the three drugs i.e., chloroquine, S-P combination and quinine. Asexual parasite clearance and also fever clearance was slowest with chloroquine and fastest with quinine. Interpretation & conclusion: The findings of this study show the presence of multi drug failure P. falciparum in Jairampur-Nampong, a western Myanmar bordering area of Arunachal Pradesh. Anti malarial drug resistance is increasing in Indo-Myanmar border areas and systematic studies need to be done to review the situation

    Z boson pair production at LHC in a stabilized Randall-Sundrum scenario

    We study the Z boson pair production at LHC in the Randall-Sundrum scenario with the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism. It is shown that comprehensive account of the Kaluza-Klein graviton and radion effects is crucial to probe the model: The KK graviton effects enhance the cross section of ggZZg g \to Z Z on the whole so that the resonance peak of the radion becomes easy to detect, whereas the RS effects on the qqˉZZq\bar{q} \to Z Z process are rather insignificant. The pTp_T and invariant-mass distributions are presented to study the dependence of the RS model parameters. The production of longitudinally polarized Z bosons, to which the SM contributions are suppressed, is mainly due to KK gravitons and the radion, providing one of the most robust methods to signal the RS effects. The 1σ1 \sigma sensitivity bounds on (Λπ,mϕ)(\Lambda_\pi, m_\phi) with k/MPl=0.1k/M_{\rm Pl} =0.1 are also obtained such that the effective weak scale Λπ\Lambda_\pi of order 5 TeV can be experimentally probed.Comment: 28 pages, LaTex file, 18 eps figure

    Neutrino masses and mixing angles from leptoquark interactions

    In this paper we show that the mixing between leptoquarks (LQ's) from different SU(2)lSU(2)_l multiplets can generate a non-trivial Majorana mass matrix for neutrinos through one loop self energy diagrams. Such mixing can arise from gauge invariant and renormalizable LQ-Higgs interaction terms after EW symmetry breaking. We use the experimental indication on neutrino oscillation to find constraints on specific combinations of LQ couplings to quark-lepton pairs and to the SM higgs boson. These constraints are compared with the ones from πeνˉe\pi\to e\bar {\nu}_e.Comment: The expressions for majorana mass matrix of neutrinos have been corrected so that they are symmetric.     In this paper, we quantize universal gauge groups such as SU(\infty), as well as their homogeneous spaces, in the sigma-C*-algebra setting. More precisely, we propose concise definitions of sigma-C*-quantum groups and sigma-C*-quantum homogeneous spaces and explain these concepts here. At the same time, we put these definitions in the mathematical context of countably compactly generated spaces as well as C*-compact quantum groups and homogeneous spaces. We also study the representable K-theory of these spaces and compute it for the quantum homogeneous spaces associated to the universal gauge group SU(\infty).Comment: 14 pages.     Fish hydrolysate (FH) based Bind-Add+ is a emulsion type feed binder cum additive which contains un-denatured proteins and calcium is capable of reasonable level of gelatinization and contribute to the binding properties which is seen from water absorptive capacity, buoyancy, bulk density and water stability characteristics during extrusion pellet production.. Bind-Add+ has good amount of bio-available primary nutrients, secondary nutrients, micro nutrients, anti-oxidants and pro-biotic in a soluble liquid form and most suitable as additive or feed supplement. Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) feeding trial indicate that growth rate and feed utilization efficiency in Bind-Add+ incorporated diets increases significantly in comparison to controlled diet
