Geometric variations of the Boltzmann entropy
We perform a calculation of the first and second order infinitesimal
variations, with respect to energy, of the Boltzmann entropy of constant energy
hypersurfaces of a system with a finite number of degrees of freedom. We
comment on the stability interpretation of the second variation in this
framework.Comment: 9 pages, no figure
Volatile compounds of some popular Mediterranean seafood species
The volatile compounds of highly commercialised fresh Mediterranean seafood species, including seven fish (sand-smelt Atherina boyeri, picarel Spicara smaris, hake Merluccius merluccius, pilchard Sardina pilchardus, bogue Boobps boops, anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and striped-mullet Mullus barbatus), squid (Loligo vulgaris), shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) and mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), were evaluated by simultaneous steam distillation-extraction and subsequent GC-MS analysis. A total of 298 volatile compounds were detected. The mussels contained the highest total concentration of volatile compounds, while pilchard among fish species contained the highest number and concentrations of volatile compounds. Individual patterns of volatile compounds have been distinguished. The fish species when compared to the shellfish species studied, contained 6 to 30 times more 1-penten-3-ol, higher quantities of 2-ethylfuran, and 2,3-pentanedione, which was absent from the shellfish species. Pilchard is characterized by a high concentration of alcohols, shrimps by the high presence of amines and S-compounds, while mussels by high amounts of aldehydes, furans, and N-containing compounds (pyridine, pyrazines and pyrrols). The fatty acid-originating carbonyl compounds in fish seem to be related to the species’ fat content
The Effect of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Evaluation on Treatment Planning after Endodontic Instrument Fracture
Intracanal instrument fracture is a procedural iatrogenic event during endodontic treatment that may affect treatment planning and eventually treatment outcome. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) has offered several advantages, especially in endodontic cases in which information from conventional periapical radiograph may not be adequate to allow a precise treatment planning decision and a subsequent appropriate management of the cases. The present study was firstly conducted to assess the effect of CBCT evaluation on the decision-making process after instrument fracture; secondly, to introduce a new clinical approach in cases with fractured instruments located in the mesial roots of mandibular and maxillary molars. The study design was observational. The sample comprised all cases of mandibular and maxillary molars where an instrument fracture had occurred in the mesial roots. Two qualified (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece) and experienced (more than fifteen years of daily practicing) endodontists evaluated all the cases. The initial treatment plan made by evaluating periapical radiographs of each case was compared to the final plan set after CBCT evaluation. A marginal homogeneity test for paired data was conducted to test the concordance of treatment planning with periapical radiographs versus CBCT. Multivariable logistic regression was structured to identify predictors of modification in treatment planning following CBCT assessment, and to record estimators for decision to remove, bypass or retain the fragment. The level of statistical significance was pre-specified at p < 0.05. Of a total 52 cases evaluated, change in treatment planning with conventional periapical radiograph as a reference, following evaluation of CBCT, was observed in more than half of the teeth. The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Apical location of the fragment was more likely to induce a perceived change in treatment planning after CBCT evaluation (p < 0.01). Canal merging induced 95% lower odds (p = 0.01) for taking a decision to remove or bypass, revealing that retaining the fragment was by far a more likely decision. A significant impact of CBCT preoperative evaluation on treatment planning for the management of such cases was demonstrated. Apical location of the fragment and canal merging seem to influence the decision-making process.

A stochastic derivation of the geodesic rule
We argue that the geodesic rule, for global defects, is a consequence of the
randomness of the values of the Goldstone field in each causally
connected volume. As these volumes collide and coalescence, evolves by
performing a random walk on the vacuum manifold . We derive a
Fokker-Planck equation that describes the continuum limit of this process. Its
fundamental solution is the heat kernel on , whose leading
asymptotic behavior establishes the geodesic rule.Comment: 12 pages, No figures. To be published in Int. Jour. Mod. Phys.
Rate of parity violation from measure concentration
We present a geometric argument determining the kinematic (phase-space)
factor contributing to the relative rate at which degrees of freedom of one
chirality come to dominate over degrees of freedom of opposite chirality, in
models with parity violation. We rely on the measure concentration of a subset
of a Euclidean cube which is controlled by an isoperimetric inequality. We
provide an interpretation of this result in terms of ideas of Statistical
Mechanics.Comment: 10 pages, no figure
Contrast-enhanced ultrasound performed under urgent conditions. Indications, review of the technique, clinical examples and limitations
Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is an imaging technique with various indications, most of which refer to scheduled examinations. However, CEUS can also be performed under urgent conditions for the investigation of many different clinical questions. This article reviews basic physics of ultrasound contrast agents and examines the commonest urgent clinical applications of CEUS. These include, among others, abdominal solid organ trauma and infarcts, scrotal and penile pathology and blood vessel imaging. Patients can be examined with a very short time delay at their bedside, without exposure to ionising radiation or risk of anaphylactic reaction and renal failure, while contraindications are minimal. CEUS technique is described for various urgent indications and imaging examples from our department’s experience are presented. Safety matters and limitations of CEUS are also mentioned. Teaching Points Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) can be performed urgently for various clinical applications. Abdominal indications include solid organ trauma and infarcts. CEUS in abdominal organ trauma correlates well with CT and can replace it for patient follow-up. CEUS images testicular torsion, infection and infarction, as well as testicular and penile trauma. Blood vessels can be assessed with CEUS for obstruction, aneurysm, thrombosis and dissection
Bayesian epidemic models for spatially aggregated count data
Epidemic data often possess certain characteristics, such as the presence of many zeros, the spatial nature of the disease spread mechanism, environmental noise, serial correlation and dependence on time varying factors. This paper addresses these issues via suitable Bayesian modelling. In doing so we utilise a general class of stochastic regression models appropriate for spatio-temporal count data with an excess number of zeros. The developed regression framework does incorporate serial correlation and time varying covariates through an Ornstein Uhlenbeck process formulation. In addition, we explore the effect of different priors, including default options and variations of mixtures of g-priors. The effect of different distance kernels for the epidemic model component is investigated. We proceed by developing branching process-based methods for testing scenarios for disease control, thus linking traditional epidemiological models with stochastic epidemic processes, useful in policy-focused decision making. The approach is illustrated with an application to a sheep pox dataset from the Evros region, Greece
