Dark Optical Lattice of Ring Traps for Cold Atoms
We propose a new geometry of optical lattice for cold atoms, namely a lattice
made of a 1D stack of dark ring traps. It is obtained through the interference
pattern of a standard Gaussian beam with a counter-propagating hollow beam
obtained using a setup with two conical lenses. The traps of the resulting
lattice are characterized by a high confinement and a filling rate much larger
than unity, even if loaded with cold atoms from a MOT. We have implemented this
system experimentally, and obtained a lattice of ring traps populated with
typically 40 atoms per site with a life time of 30 ms. Applications in
statistical physics, quantum computing and Bose-Einstein condensate dynamics

Cross-modal extinction in a boy with severely autistic behaviour and high verbal intelligence
Anecdotal reports from individuals with autism suggest a loss of awareness to stimuli from one modality in the presence of stimuli from another. Here we document such a case in a detailed study of T.M., a 13-year-old boy with autism in whom significant autistic behaviors are combined with an uneven IQ profile of superior verbal and low performance abilities. Although T.M.'s speech is often unintelligible and his behavior is dominated by motor stereotypies and impulsivity, he can communicate by typing or pointing independently within a letter board. A series of experiments using simple and highly salient visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli demonstrated a hierarchy of cross-modal extinction, in which auditory information extinguished other modalities at various levels of processing. T.M. also showed deficits in shifting and sustaining attention. These results provide evidence for mono-channel perception in autism and suggest a general pattern of winner-takes-all processing in which a stronger stimulus-d riven representation dominates behavior, extinguishing weaker representations

Do female association preferences predict the likelihood of reproduction?
Sexual selection acting on male traits through female mate choice is commonly inferred from female association preferences in dichotomous mate choice experiments. However, there are surprisingly few empirical demonstrations that such association preferences predict the likelihood of females reproducing with a particular male. This information is essential to confirm association preferences as good predictors of mate choice. We used green swordtails (<i>Xiphophorus helleri</i>) to test whether association preferences predict the likelihood of a female reproducing with a male. Females were tested for a preference for long- or short-sworded males in a standard dichotomous choice experiment and then allowed free access to either their preferred or non-preferred male. If females subsequently failed to produce fry, they were provided a second unfamiliar male with similar sword length to the first male. Females were more likely to reproduce with preferred than non-preferred males, but for those that reproduced, neither the status (preferred/non-preferred) nor the sword length (long/short) of the male had an effect on brood size or relative investment in growth by the female. There was no overall preference based on sword length in this study, but male sword length did affect likelihood of reproduction, with females more likely to reproduce with long- than short-sworded males (independent of preference for such males in earlier choice tests). These results suggest that female association preferences are good indicators of female mate choice but that ornament characteristics of the male are also important
Optical monitoring of the gravitationally lensed quasar Q2237+0305 from APO between June 1995 and January 1998
We present a data set of images of the gravitationally lensed quasar
Q2237+0305, that was obtained at the Apache Point Observatory (APO) between
June 1995 and January 1998. Although the images were taken under variable,
often poor seeing conditions and with coarse pixel sampling, photometry is
possible for the two brighter quasar images A and B with the help of exact
quasar image positions from HST observations. We obtain a light curve with 73
data points for each of the images A and B. There is evidence for a long (>~
100 day) brightness peak in image A in 1996 with an amplitude of about 0.4 to
0.5 mag (relative to 1995), which indicates that microlensing has been taking
place in the lensing galaxy. Image B does not vary much over the course of the
observation period. The long, smooth variation of the light curve is similar to
the results from the OGLE monitoring of the system (Wozniak et al. 2000a).Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in A&
Multi Mode Interferometer for Guided Matter Waves
We describe the fundamental features of an interferometer for guided matter
waves based on Y-beam splitters and show that, in a quasi two-dimensional
regime, such a device exhibits high contrast fringes even in a multi mode

Rotationally Warm Molecular Hydrogen in the Orion Bar
The Orion Bar is one of the nearest and best-studied photodissociation or
photon-dominated regions (PDRs). Observations reveal the presence of H2 lines
from vibrationally or rotationally excited upper levels that suggest warm gas
temperatures (400 to 700 K). However, standard models of PDRs are unable to
reproduce such warm rotational temperatures. In this paper we attempt to
explain these observations with new comprehensive models which extend from the
H+ region through the Bar and include the magnetic field in the equation of
state. We adopt the model parameters from our previous paper which successfully
reproduced a wide variety of spectral observations across the Bar. In this
model the local cosmic-ray density is enhanced above the galactic background,
as is the magnetic field, and which increases the cosmic-ray heating elevating
the temperature in the molecular region. The pressure is further enhanced above
the gas pressure in the H+ region by the momentum transferred from the absorbed
starlight. Here we investigate whether the observed H2 lines can be reproduced
with standard assumptions concerning the grain photoelectric emission. We also
explore the effects due to the inclusion of recently computed H2 + H2, H2 + H

Survey of Canadian Animal-Based Researchers' Views on the Three Rs: Replacement, Reduction and Refinement
The ‘Three Rs’ tenet (replacement, reduction, refinement) is a widely accepted cornerstone of Canadian and international policies on animal-based science. The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) initiated this web-based survey to obtain greater understanding of ‘principal investigators’ and ‘other researchers’ (i.e. graduate students, post-doctoral researchers etc.) views on the Three Rs, and to identify obstacles and opportunities for continued implementation of the Three Rs in Canada. Responses from 414 participants indicate that researchers currently do not view the goal of replacement as achievable. Researchers prefer to use enough animals to ensure quality data is obtained rather than using the minimum and potentially waste those animals if a problem occurs during the study. Many feel that they already reduce animal numbers as much as possible and have concerns that further reduction may compromise research. Most participants were ambivalent about re-use, but expressed concern that the practice could compromise experimental outcomes. In considering refinement, many researchers feel there are situations where animals should not receive pain relieving drugs because it may compromise scientific outcomes, although there was strong support for the Three Rs strategy of conducting animal welfare-related pilot studies, which were viewed as useful for both animal welfare and experimental design. Participants were not opposed to being offered “assistance” to implement the Three Rs, so long as the input is provided in a collegial manner, and from individuals who are perceived as experts. It may be useful for animal use policymakers to consider what steps are needed to make replacement a more feasible goal. In addition, initiatives that offer researchers greater practical and logistical support with Three Rs implementation may be useful. Encouragement and financial support for Three Rs initiatives may result in valuable contributions to Three Rs knowledge and improve welfare for animals used in science
