A Shotgun Model for Gamma Ray Bursts
We propose that gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by a shower of heavy
blobs running into circumstellar material at highly relativistic speeds. The
gamma ray emission is produced in the shocks these bullets drive into the
surrounding medium. The short term variability seen in GRBs is set by the
slowing-down time of the bullets while the overall duration of the burst is set
by the lifetime of the central engine. A requirement of this model is that the
ambient medium be dense, consistent with a strong stellar wind. The efficiency

Evidence for a parsec scale X-ray jet from the accreting neutron star Circinus X-1
We analyzed the zero-order image of a 50 ks Chandra gratings observation of
Circinus X-1, taken in 2005 during the source's low-flux state. Circinus X-1 is
an accreting neutron star that exhibits ultra-relativistic arcsecond-scale
radio jets and diffuse arcminute-scale radio jets and lobes. The image shows a
clear excess along the general direction of the north-western counter-jet,
coincident with the radio emission, suggesting that it originates either in the
jet itself or in the shock the jet is driving into its environment. This makes
Circinus X-1 the first neutron star for which an extended X-ray jet has been
detected. The kinetic jet power we infer is significantly larger than the

The Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network: Results of the naturalistic follow-up study after 2.5 years of follow-up in the German centres
The Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network (SFBN) is an international, multisite network investigating the characteristics and course of bipolar disorder. Methods (history, ratings and longitudinal follow-up) are standardized and equally applied in all 7 centres. This article describes demographics and illness characteristics of the first 152 German patients enrolled in them SFBN as well as the results of 2.5 years of follow-up. Patients in Germany were usually enrolled after hospitalisation. More than 72% of the study population suffered from bipolar I disorder and 25% from bipolar 11 disorder. The mean +/- SD age of the study participants was 42.08 +/- 13.5 years, and the mean SD age of onset 24.44 +/- 10.9 years. More than 40% of the sample reported a rapid-cycling course in history, and even more a cycle acceleration overtime. 37% attempted suicide at least once. 36% had an additional Axis I disorder, with alcohol abuse being the most common one, followed by anxiety disorders. During the follow-up period, only 27% remained stable, 56% had a recurrence, 12.8% perceived subsyndromal symptoms despite treatment and regular visits. 27% suffered from a rapid-cycling course during the follow-up period. Recurrences were significantly associated with bipolar I disorder, an additional comorbid Axis I disorder, rapid cycling in history, a higher number of mood stabilizers and the long-term use of typical antipsychotics. Rapid cycling during follow-up was only associated with a rapidcycling course in history, a higher number of mood stabilizers and at least one suicide attempt in history. Copyright (c) 2003 S. Production of exotic isotopes in complete fusion reactions with radioactive beams
The isotopic dependence of the complete fusion (capture) cross section is
analyzed in the reactions
Xe+Ca with stable and
radioactive beams. It is shown for the first time that the very neutron-rich
nuclei W can be reached with relatively large cross sections by
complete fusion reactions with radioactive ion beams at incident energies near
the Coulomb barrier. A comparison between the complete fusion and fragmentation
reactions for the production of neutron-rich W and neutron-deficient Rn
