    Mechanochemical stability of hydrogen titanate nanostructures

    Structural stability of nanostructured titanates was investigated for further processing and possible applications. With the aim to investigate their mechanochemical stability we applied highenergy ball milling and studied induced phase transitions. Hydrogen titanates having two different morfologies, microcrystals and nanotubes, were taken into consideration. During mechanochemical treatment of both morphologies, we observed the phase transition from hydrogen titanate to TiO2 anatase and then to TiO2 rutile. Anatase to rutile phase transition occurred without appearance of intermediate high pressure TiO2 II typically observed in the case of mechanochemical treatment of TiO2. In the case of microcrystals, phase transition from hydrogen titanate to anatase starts after longer milling time than in the case of nanotubes, which is explained by larger particles sizes of crystalline powder. On the contrary, further phase transition from anatase to rutile was occurred faster in crystalline powder than in the case of nanotubes. The sequence of phase transitions was studied by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction, while morphology and crystal structure at nanoscale were analyzed by high resolution electron microscopy

    IL-33/ST2 Pathway and Galectin-3 as a New Analytes in Pathogenesis and Cardiometabolic Risk Evaluation in Psychosis

    Schizophrenia and treatment of this disorder are often accompanied with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular issues. Alterations in the serum level of innate immune mediators, such as interleukin-33 (IL-33) and its receptor IL-33R (ST2) and Galectin-3 (Gal-3) were observed in these conditions. Moreover, these parameters are potential prognostic and therapeutic markers. There is also accumulating evidence that these molecules play a role in neuroinflammation. Therefore, in this study we have investigated the serum level of Gal-3, IL-33 and soluble ST2 (sST2) in different stages of schizophrenia. Gal-3 levels were elevated in remission and lower in schizophrenia exacerbation in comparison with controls. Levels of IL-33 and sST2 are higher in schizophrenia exacerbation in comparison with controls and patients in remission. This initial analysis of new markers of neuroinflammation suggested their involvement in schizophrenia pathophysiology and/or cardiometabolic comorbidity

    Risk factors for hospital infections caused by carbapanem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii

    © 2016 Djordjevicet al. Introduction: Acinetobacter baumannii is one of major causative agents of severe, life-threatening hospital infections (HIs), especially in intensive care units (ICUs). Our aim was to discover the risk factors associated with the emergence of HIs caused by carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB), as well as those associated with death in patients who suffer from such infections. Methodology: A prospective cohort study was conducted over a five-year period in the medical-surgical ICU of the Clinical Centre in Kragujevac, Serbia. The study group comprised patients who had HIs caused by CRAB, while the control group comprised patients infected with carbapenem-sensitive Acinetobacter baumannii. Results: In total, 137 patients developed HIs caused by Acinetobacter baumannii. The mean age of the patients was 59.65 ± 16.08 years, and 99 (72.26%) of them were males. In 95 patients (69.35%), the infection was caused by CRAB. There were six independent risk factors for CRAB infections: use of mechanical ventilation, previous stay in another department, stay in ICU for more than a month, and previous use of carbapenems, aminoglycosides, and metronidazole. Three independent risk factors were found for death in patients with HIs caused by CRAB: use of mechanical ventilation, previous stay in another department, and previous use of carbapenems. Conclusions: The results of this study can be helpful when identifying patients with risk of HIs caused by CRAB and in planning preventive measures. Modification of known risk factors and appropriate institutional policy of antibiotic utilization are important measures that may decrease the incidence and mortality of such infections
