The mean field infinite range p=3 spin glass: equilibrium landscape and correlation time scales
We investigate numerically the dynamical behavior of the mean field 3-spin
spin glass model: we study equilibrium dynamics, and compute equilibrium time
scales as a function of the system size V. We find that for increasing volumes
the time scales increase like . We also present an
accurate study of the equilibrium static properties of the system.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure
On âOrganized Crimeâ in the illicit antiquities trade: moving beyond the definitional debate
The extent to which âorganized crimeâ is involved in illicit antiquities trafficking is unknown and frequently debated. This paper explores the significance and scale of the illicit antiquities trade as a unique transnational criminal phenomenon that is often said to be perpetrated by and exhibit traits of so-called âorganized crime.â The definitional debate behind the term âorganized crimeâ is considered as a potential problem impeding our understanding of its existence or extent in illicit antiquities trafficking, and a basic progression-based model is then suggested as a new tool to move beyond the definitional debate for future research that may help to elucidate the actors, processes and criminal dynamics taking place within the illicit antiquities trade from source to market. The paper concludes that researchers should focus not on the question of whether organized criminals- particularly in a traditionally conceived, mafia-type stereotypical sense- are involved in the illicit antiquities trade, but instead on the structure and progression of antiquities trafficking itself that embody both organized and criminal dynamics
Deployment of self-contained self rescuers in coal mines
Field trials at three New South Wales and one Queensland coal mines were carried out to gather data on oxygen .\u27run out times of Self-Contained Self Rescuers (SCSRs), time taken to escape from the mine, distances travelled and the average heart rate of subjects wearing SCSRs. The study has led to a method of predicting the duration of oxygen supply from a SCSR as a function of the wearer\u27s body weight. physical fitness and the prevailing environmental conditions. Escapeway design, planning for emergencies, familiarity with SCSRs and experiential escape training are critical to control panic and maxirnise the likelihood of survival of a person attempting to escape in an emergency involving fIre or explosion
Seasonal trends in concentrations and fluxes of volatile organic compounds above central London
Concentrations and fluxes of seven volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured between August and December 2012 at a roof-top site in central London as part of the ClearfLo project (Clean Air for London). VOC concentrations were quantified using a proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometer and fluxes were calculated using a virtual disjunct eddy covariance technique. The median VOC fluxes, including aromatics, oxygenated compounds and isoprene, ranged from 0.07 to 0.33 mg mâ2 hâ1 and mixing ratios were 7.27 ppb for methanol (m / z 33) and <1 ppb for the remaining compounds. Strong relationships were observed between most VOC fluxes and concentrations with traffic density, but also with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and temperature for the oxygenated compounds and isoprene. An estimated 50â90 % of aromatic fluxes were attributable to traffic activity, which showed little seasonal variation, suggesting boundary layer effects or possibly advected pollution may be the primary causes of increased concentrations of aromatics in winter. PAR and temperature-dependent processes accounted for the majority of isoprene, methanol and acetaldehyde fluxes and concentrations in August and September, when fluxes and concentrations were largest. Modelled biogenic isoprene fluxes using the G95 algorithm agreed well with measured fluxes in August and September, due to urban vegetation. Comparisons of estimated annual benzene emissions from the London and National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory agreed well with measured benzene fluxes. Flux footprint analysis indicated emission sources were localized and that boundary layer dynamics and source strengths were responsible for temporal and spatial VOC flux and concentration variability during the measurement period
Q Rings
We show the existence of new stable ring-like localized scalar field
configurations whose stability is due to a combination of topological and
nontopological charges. In that sense these defects may be called
semitopological. These rings are Noether charged and also carry Noether current
(they are superconducting). They are local minima of the energy in scalar field
theories with an unbroken U(1) global symmetry. We obtain numerical solutions
of the field configuration corresponding to large rings and derive virial
theorems demonstrating their stability. We also derive the minimum energy field
configurations in 3D and simulate the evolution of a finite size Q ring on a
three dimensional lattice thus generalizing our demonstration of stability.Comment: 4 double column pages including 2 figure
Analysis of Dialogical Argumentation via Finite State Machines
Dialogical argumentation is an important cognitive activity by which agents
exchange arguments and counterarguments as part of some process such as
discussion, debate, persuasion and negotiation. Whilst numerous formal systems
have been proposed, there is a lack of frameworks for implementing and
evaluating these proposals. First-order executable logic has been proposed as a
general framework for specifying and analysing dialogical argumentation. In
this paper, we investigate how we can implement systems for dialogical
argumentation using propositional executable logic. Our approach is to present
and evaluate an algorithm that generates a finite state machine that reflects a
propositional executable logic specification for a dialogical argumentation
together with an initial state. We also consider how the finite state machines
can be analysed, with the minimax strategy being used as an illustration of the
kinds of empirical analysis that can be undertaken.Comment: 10 page
