    Rotating Electromagnetic Waves in Toroid-Shaped Regions

    Electromagnetic waves, solving the full set of Maxwell equations in vacuum, are numerically computed. These waves occupy a fixed bounded region of the three dimensional space, topologically equivalent to a toroid. Thus, their fluid dynamics analogs are vortex rings. An analysis of the shape of the sections of the rings, depending on the angular speed of rotation and the major diameter, is carried out. Successively, spherical electromagnetic vortex rings of Hill's type are taken into consideration. For some interesting peculiar configurations, explicit numerical solutions are exhibited.Comment: 27 pages, 40 figure

    Ongoing hierarchical massive cluster assembly: the LISCA II structure in the Perseus complex

    We report on the identification of a massive (105\sim10^5 M_\odot) sub-structured stellar system in the Galactic Perseus complex likely undergoing hierarchical cluster assembly. Such a system comprises nine star clusters (including the well-known clusters NGC 654 and NGC 663) and an extended and low-density stellar halo. Gaia-DR3 and available spectroscopic data show that all its components are physically consistent in the 6D phase-space (position, parallax, and 3D motion), homogeneous in age (14 - 44 Myr), and chemical content (half-solar metallicity). In addition, the system's global stellar density distribution is that of typical star clusters and shows clear evidence of mass segregation. We find that the hierarchical structure is mostly contracting towards the center with a speed of up to 45\simeq4-5 km s1^{-1}, while the innermost regions expand at a lower rate (about 1\simeq1 km s1^{-1}) and are dominated by random motions. Interestingly, this pattern is dominated by the kinematics of massive stars, while low-mass stars (M<2M<2 M_\odot) are characterized by contraction across the entire cluster. Finally, the nine star clusters in the system are all characterized by a relatively flat velocity dispersion profile possibly resulting from ongoing interactions and tidal heating. We show that the observational results are generally consistent with those found in NN-body simulations following the cluster violent relaxation phase strongly suggesting that the system is a massive cluster in the early assembly stages.     Influenza vaccination among healthcare workers in a multidisciplinary University Hospital in Italy

    Background. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for healthcare workers (HCWs) in order to reduce the morbidity associated with influenza in healthcare settings. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current vaccination status of the HCWs in one of Italy's largest multidisciplinary University Hospitals. Methods. Between February 1 and March 31, 2006, we carried out a cross-sectional study of influenza vaccination coverage among HCWs at the University Hospital Fondazione IRCCS "Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Mangiagalli e Regina Elena", Milan, Italy. After receiving a brief description of the aim of the study, 2,143 (95%: 1,064 physicians; 855 nurses; 224 paramedics) of 2,240 HCWs self-completed an anonymous questionnaire. Results. Influenza vaccination coverage was very low in all specialties, varying from 17.6% in the Emergency Department to 24.3% in the Surgery Department, and knowledge of influenza epidemiology and prevention was poor. The factors positively associated with being vaccinated were an age of ≥ 45 years, considering influenza a potentially severe disease, and being aware of the high-risk categories for which influenza vaccination is strongly recommended; those that negatively associated with being vaccinated were being female, working in the Medicine Department, and being a nurse or paramedic. Conclusion. Despite strong recommendations, influenza vaccination coverage seemed to be very low among HCWs of all specialties, with differences between areas and types of employment. Specific continuous educational and vaccination programs for different targets should be urgently organized to reduce morbidity and mortality in high-risk patients, contain nosocomial outbreaks, and ensure an appropriate socioeconomic impact

    Comparing league formats with respect to match importance in Belgian football

    Recently, most clubs in the highest Belgian football division have become convinced that the format of their league should be changed. Moreover, the TV station that broadcasts the league is pleading for a more attractive competition. However, the clubs have not been able to agree on a new league format, mainly because they have conflicting interests. In this paper, we compare the current league format, and three other formats that have been considered by the Royal Belgian Football Association. We simulate the course of each of these league formats, based on historical match results. We assume that the attractiveness of a format is determined by the importance of its games; our importance measure for a game is based on the number of teams for which this game can be decisive to reach a given goal. Furthermore, we provide an overview of how each league format aligns with the expectations and interests of each type of club

    Constraints on the χ_(c1) versus χ_(c2) polarizations in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV

    The polarizations of promptly produced χ_(c1) and χ_(c2) mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at √s=8  TeV. The χ_c states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χ_c → J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e⁺e⁻, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χ_(c2) to χ_(c1) yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ → μ⁺μ⁻ decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions.
