Conservation status of New Zealand freshwater invertebrates, 2013
The conservation status of 644 freshwater invertebrate taxa, across five Phyla, 28 Orders and 75 Families, was assessed using the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS) criteria. Forty-six species were ranked Nationally Critical, 11 Nationally Endangered and 16 Nationally Vulnerable. One hundred and seventy-two taxa were listed as Data Deficient. A full list is presented, along with summaries and brief notes on the most important changes. This list replaces all previous NZTCS lists for freshwater invertebrates
Difference in severity of porcine circovirus type two-induced pathological lesions between Landrace and Pietrain pigs
Anecdotal information from the field suggests that there are host genetic differences in susceptibility to porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) associated disease among Landrace and Pietrain breeds. The objective of this study was to determine if a difference exists in PCV2 susceptibility between Landrace and Pi-etrain pigs under experimental conditions. Thirty-nine Landrace pigs and 39 Pietrain pigs were blocked by breed, sire, dam, and litter and randomly divided into the following 4 groups: Landrace noninoculated negative control (Landrace-NEG; n = 13), Pietrain noninoculated negative control (Pietrain-NEG; n = 13), Landrace-PCV2 (n = 26; Landrace), and Pietrain-PCV2 (n = 26; Pietrain). After waning of passively acquired anti-PCV2 antibodies, Landrace-PCV2 and Pietrain-PCV2 groups were inoculated with PCV2 isolate ISU-40895. The Landrace-NEG and Pietrain-NEG groups were housed in a separate room, remained noninoculated, and served as negative controls. All pigs in all groups were necropsied at 21 d post PCV2-inoculation. Onset of seroconversion and concentrations of anti-PCV2-IgM, anti-PCV2-IgG, and anti-PCV2 neutralizing antibodies were similar in Landrace-PCV2 and Pietrain-PCV2 groups. Furthermore, the amount of PCV2 DNA and cytokine concentrations in serum and plasma samples were not different between the 2 PCV2-inoculated groups. The severity of PCV2-associated microscopic lesions was different between Landrace and Pietrain pigs; Landrace-PCV2 pigs had significantly (P \u3c 0.05) more severe lymphoid lesions than the Pietrain-PCV2 pigs. Although the pigs originated from the same farm where their dams were commingled, passively acquired anti-PCV2-antibodies waned in Pietrain pigs by approximately 12 wk of age, whereas the majority of the Landrace pigs remained PCV2 seropositive until 18 wk of age and beyond. The results from this study indicate that a genetic difference exists between these 2 breeds of pigs in susceptibility to PCV2-associated lesions

Architecture of Kepler's Multi-transiting Systems: II. New investigations with twice as many candidates
We report on the orbital architectures of Kepler systems having multiple
planet candidates identified in the analysis of data from the first six
quarters of Kepler data and reported by Batalha et al. (2013). These data show
899 transiting planet candidates in 365 multiple-planet systems and provide a
powerful means to study the statistical properties of planetary systems. Using
a generic mass-radius relationship, we find that only two pairs of planets in
these candidate systems (out of 761 pairs total) appear to be on Hill-unstable
orbits, indicating ~96% of the candidate planetary systems are correctly
interpreted as true systems. We find that planet pairs show little statistical
preference to be near mean-motion resonances. We identify an asymmetry in the
distribution of period ratios near first-order resonances (e.g., 2:1, 3:2),
with an excess of planet pairs lying wide of resonance and relatively few lying
narrow of resonance. Finally, based upon the transit duration ratios of
adjacent planets in each system, we find that the interior planet tends to have
a smaller transit impact parameter than the exterior planet does. This finding
suggests that the mode of the mutual inclinations of planetary orbital planes
is in the range 1.0-2.2 degrees, for the packed systems of small planets probed

On the Relative Sizes of Planets within Kepler Multiple-candidate Systems
We present a study of the relative sizes of planets within the multiple-candidate systems discovered with the Kepler mission. We have compared the size of each planet to the size of every other planet within a given planetary system after correcting the sample for detection and geometric biases. We find that for planet pairs for which one or both objects are approximately Neptune-sized or larger, the larger planet is most often the planet with the longer period. No such size-location correlation is seen for pairs of planets when both planets are smaller than Neptune. Specifically, if at least one planet in a planet pair has a radius of ≳ 3 R_⊕, 68% ± 6% of the planet pairs have the inner planet smaller than the outer planet, while no preferred sequential ordering of the planets is observed if both planets in a pair are smaller than ≾ 3 R_⊕
WormBase: a multi-species resource for nematode biology and genomics
WormBase (http://www.wormbase.org/) is the central data repository for information about Caenorhabditis elegans and related nematodes. As a model organism database, WormBase extends beyond the genomic sequence, integrating experimental results with extensively annotated views of the genome. The WormBase Consortium continues to expand the biological scope and utility of WormBase with the inclusion of large-scale genomic analyses, through active data and literature curation, through new analysis and visualization tools, and through refinement of the user interface. Over the past year, the nearly complete genomic sequence and comparative analyses of the closely related species Caenorhabditis briggsae have been integrated into WormBase, including gene predictions, ortholog assignments and a new synteny viewer to display the relationships between the two species. Extensive site-wide refinement of the user interface now provides quick access to the most frequently accessed resources and a consistent browsing experience across the site. Unified single-page views now provide complete summaries of commonly accessed entries like genes. These advances continue to increase the utility of WormBase for C.elegans researchers, as well as for those researchers exploring problems in functional and comparative genomics in the context of a powerful genetic system

A First Comparison of Kepler Planet Candidates in Single and Multiple Systems
In this letter we present an overview of the rich population of systems with
multiple candidate transiting planets found in the first four months of Kepler
data. The census of multiples includes 115 targets that show 2 candidate
planets, 45 with 3, 8 with 4, and 1 each with 5 and 6, for a total of 170
systems with 408 candidates. When compared to the 827 systems with only one
candidate, the multiples account for 17 percent of the total number of systems,
and a third of all the planet candidates. We compare the characteristics of
candidates found in multiples with those found in singles. False positives due
to eclipsing binaries are much less common for the multiples, as expected.
Singles and multiples are both dominated by planets smaller than Neptune; 69
+2/-3 percent for singles and 86 +2/-5 percent for multiples. This result, that
systems with multiple transiting planets are less likely to include a
transiting giant planet, suggests that close-in giant planets tend to disrupt
the orbital inclinations of small planets in flat systems, or maybe even to
