    Physical demand but not dexterity is associated with motor flexibility during rapid reaching in healthy young adults

    Healthy humans are able to place light and heavy objects in small and large target locations with remarkable accuracy. Here we examine how dexterity demand and physical demand affect flexibility in joint coordination and end-effector kinematics when healthy young adults perform an upper extremity reaching task. We manipulated dexterity demand by changing target size and physical demand by increasing external resistance to reaching. Uncontrolled manifold analysis was used to decompose variability in joint coordination patterns into variability stabilizing the end-effector and variability de-stabilizing the end-effector during reaching. Our results demonstrate a proportional increase in stabilizing and de-stabilizing variability without a change in the ratio of the two variability components as physical demands increase. We interpret this finding in the context of previous studies showing that sensorimotor noise increases with increasing physical demands. We propose that the larger de-stabilizing variability as a function of physical demand originated from larger sensorimotor noise in the neuromuscular system. The larger stabilizing variability with larger physical demands is a strategy employed by the neuromuscular system to counter the de-stabilizing variability so that performance stability is maintained. Our findings have practical implications for improving the effectiveness of movement therapy in a wide range of patient groups, maintaining upper extremity function in old adults, and for maximizing athletic performance

    The title compound, {(C2H10N2)[Cd2(HPO4)3]·H2O}n, was synthesized under hydro­thermal conditions. The structure of this hybrid compound consists of CdO6, CdO5 and PO4 polyhedra arranged so as to build an anionic inorganic layer, namely [Cd2(HPO4)3]2−, parallel to the ab plane. The edge-sharing CdO6 octa­hedra form infinite chains running along the a axis and are linked by CdO5 and PO4 polyhedra. The ethyl­ene­diammonium cation and the water mol­ecule are located between two adjacent inorganic layers and ensure the cohesion of the structure via N—H⋯O and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds

    CT Image Segmentation Using FEM with Optimized Boundary Condition

    The authors propose a CT image segmentation method using structural analysis that is useful for objects with structural dynamic characteristics. Motivation of our research is from the area of genetic activity. In order to reveal the roles of genes, it is necessary to create mutant mice and measure differences among them by scanning their skeletons with an X-ray CT scanner. The CT image needs to be manually segmented into pieces of the bones. It is a very time consuming to manually segment many mutant mouse models in order to reveal the roles of genes. It is desirable to make this segmentation procedure automatic. Although numerous papers in the past have proposed segmentation techniques, no general segmentation method for skeletons of living creatures has been established. Against this background, the authors propose a segmentation method based on the concept of destruction analogy. To realize this concept, structural analysis is performed using the finite element method (FEM), as structurally weak areas can be expected to break under conditions of stress. The contribution of the method is its novelty, as no studies have so far used structural analysis for image segmentation. The method's implementation involves three steps. First, finite elements are created directly from the pixels of a CT image, and then candidates are also selected in areas where segmentation is thought to be appropriate. The second step involves destruction analogy to find a single candidate with high strain chosen as the segmentation target. The boundary conditions for FEM are also set automatically. Then, destruction analogy is implemented by replacing pixels with high strain as background ones, and this process is iterated until object is decomposed into two parts.     This paper deals with recent, developments of topology optimization techniques for application in some new types of design problems. The emphasis is on recent work of the Danish research groups at Aalborg University and at the Technical University of Denmark and focus is on the central role that the choice of objective functions and design parameterization plays for a successful extension of the material distribution approach to new design settings and to new types of physics models. The applications that will be outlined encompass design of laminated composite structures, design for pressure loads, design in fluids, design in acoustics, and design in photonics. A short outline of other design optimization activities is also given

    Clinical effectiveness of a silk fabric in the treatment of atopic dermatitis

    Background In children with atopic dermatitis (AD), eczema is easily aggravated by contact with irritant factors (e.g. aggressive detergents, synthetic and woollen clothes, climatic factors). Objectives To evaluate the effectiveness of a special silk fabric (MICROAIR DermaSilk\uae) in the treatment of young children affected by AD with acute lesions at the time of examination. Methods Forty-six children (mean age 2 years) affected by AD in an acute phase were recruited: 31 received special silk clothes (group A) which they were instructed to wear for a week; the other 15 served as a control group (group B) and wore cotton clothing. Topical moisturizing creams or emulsions were the only topical treatment prescribed in both groups. The overall severity of the disease was evaluated using the SCORAD index. In addition, the local score of an area covered by the silk clothes was compared with the local score of an uncovered area in the same child. All patients were evaluated at baseline and 7 days after the initial examination. Results At the end of the study a significant decrease in AD severity was observed in the children of group A (mean SCORAD decrease from 43 to 30; P = 0\ub7003). At the same time, the improvement in the mean local score of the covered area (from 32 to 18\ub76; P = 0\ub7001) was significantly greater than that of the uncovered area (from 31 to 26; P = 0\ub7112).
