The objectives of the study are set to guide the investigation process and sharpen the focus on the problem. To develop the research, a method would be used to carry out the study focusing on the globalisation and the problem of poverty. In this connection, a simple model using Human Development Indexes will be used to highlight the case studies of Egypt and Jordan. This method will reflect the inter-relationship between development and growth. Indicators of Human poverty including variables such as percentage of adult illiteracy rate, life expectancy, external debt services payments and external trade are used. Following this chapter the second chapter reviews the literature relevant to the area of the study. The beginning of this chapter highlights the different views on globalisation. The chapter also investigates the relationship between globalisation and development. Though the chapter introduces the literature from a general perspective view, taking example from the scenes of world development, the sharp focus on the problem comes with the literature reviewing economic problems of developing countries. The third chapter focuses on the methodology and models. This chapter highlights the relationship between globalisation, development and poverty through variables that have strong effect on development and poverty reduction such as income growth, development and poverty. Chapter four will focus on the present and expected image of poverty in the era of globalisation. This will enable the author to review the state of poverty in the world with closer focus on the developing countries. Finally, the last chapter will focus on the Arab countries as part of the developing world in general and cases of Egypt and Jordan in particular. Then, will draw conclusion and lessons learned and suggest some recommendations for the developing countries with emphasis on Arab countries, wherever it is necessary, in finding ways to deal with such situation

Treating symptomatic uterine fibroids with myomectomy: current practice and views of UK consultants

Background: The demand for uterus-sparing treatments is increasing as more women postpone childbirth to their 30–40s, when fibroids are more symptomatic. With an increasing choice of treatment options and changing care-provider profiles, now is an opportune time to survey current practices and opinions. Using a 25-stem questionnaire, a web-based survey was used to capture the practices and opinions of UK consultant gynecologists on the treatment of symptomatic fibroids, including the types of procedure most frequently used, methods used to reduce blood loss, and awareness and acceptability of treatment options, and to assess the impact of gender and experience of the treating gynecologist. Results: The response rate was 22%. Laparascopic myomectomy is used least frequently, with 80% of the respondents using GnRHa preoperatively to minimize blood loss and correct anemia, while vasopressin is most frequently used to reduce intraoperative blood loss. Female consultants operate significantly less frequently than males. Those with more than 10 years consultant experience are more likely to perform an open myomectomy compared to those with less than 10 years experience. Conclusions: Compared to a similar survey performed 10 years ago, surgical methods remain to be the most common treatments, but use of less invasive treatments such as UAE has increased. Consultants’ attitudes appear to be responding to the patient demand for less radical treatments. However, it is yet to be seen if the changing consultant demographics will keep up with this demand. The low response rate warrants cautious interpretation of the results, but they provide an interesting snapshot of current views and practices

The Genus Xanthagaricus: An Updated Global Species Distribution and Phylogeny with the Description of Two New Species from Oman

No full text
Xanthagaricus is a saprotrophic mushroom genus with small-sized basidiomata in the family Agaricaceae (Agaricales). Prior to this study, 26 species belonging to this genus have been described and published. In this study, we reported Xanthagaricus for the first time from Oman with the description of two new species. Basidiomata of the new species Xanthagaricus appendiculatus and X. omanicus were collected during the monsoon rains of summer in 2018 in the southern coastal region of Oman. Species descriptions are based on morphological and molecular characterization. Phylogenetic analyses based on internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 = ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA clustered the new species in the Xanthagaricus clade with strong statistical support. The new species Xanthagaricusappendiculatus can be distinguished from other species by its purplish pileus with umbonate disc and X. omanicus with the largest pileus (70–90 mm diameter) among the known species of the genus. A detailed description, photographs, line drawings, and a phylogenetic tree showing the position of both new species are provided. A dichotomous key to the known taxa of Xanthagaricus is proposed. Morphological comparisons of new species with known Xanthagaricus taxa are provided. Our observations highlight the diversity of Xanthagaricus and other lepiotaceous mushrooms in southern Oman and further document the need for additional systematic focus on the region’s fungi

Network Resiliency Implementation in the ATLAS TDAQ System

No full text
The ATLAS TDAQ (Trigger and Data Acquisition) system performs the real-time selection of events produced by the detector. For this purpose approximately 2000 computers are deployed and interconnected through various high speed networks, whose architecture has already been described. This article focuses on the implementation and validation of network connectivity resiliency (previously presented at a conceptual level). Redundancy and eventually load balancing are achieved through the synergy of various protocols: 802.3ad link aggregation, OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol), MST (Multiple Spanning Trees). An innovative method for cost-effective redundant connectivity of high-throughput high-availability servers is presented. Furthermore, real-life examples showing how redundancy works, and more importantly how it might fail despite careful planning are presented
