    Rapid Communication: Epidermal Growth Factor Maps to Pig Chromosome 8

    Source and Description of Primers. Primers were designed from published sheep epidermal growth factor ( EGF) sequence (GenBank accession no. U36428) and were used to amplify across intron 3 of the EGF gene from porcine genomic DNA. Of sequences produced, 84 bp showed 82.1% identity to sheep EGF exon 3 and 81.0% to human EFG exon 3. For exon 4, the 75 bp showed 82.3% identity to sheep EGF exon 4 and 77.3% identity to human EGF exon 4. These sequences were further used to design pigspecific primers and have been submitted to GenBank (accession nos. AF079768 and AF079769)

    Recognition versus recall as measures of television commercial forgetting.

Copyright 1993 by the American Marketing Association.Investigated the impact of time since exposure, commercial length, and commercial repetition on recognition and unaided recall scores, using 204 undergraduates. Ss were randomly assigned to 12 experimental cells and asked to recall the product category, brand name, and claims for commercials they viewed; similarly 9-alternative verbal recognition tests were used. Results indicate that recognition scores were not indiscriminately high, as commonly is argued and that they declined with time, contrary to what often is assumed. The data show that recognition scores were more sensitive and more discriminating than, and covaried with, unaided recall scores. It is suggested that recognition and recall warrant more consideration by advertisers. Findings are compared to an earlier study by the 1st 2 authors (see record 1984-05496-001).     Rapid Communication: Genetic Linkage Mapping of the Porcine Fibroblast Growth Factor 7 (FGF7) Gene

    Source and Description of Primers. The forward primer was developed from a human fibroblast growth factor ( FGF7) cDNA sequence (GenBank accession no. L06243), and the reverse primer was a published primer (Kelley et al., 1992). These primers were used to amplify a 1.3-kb fragment from porcine genomic DNA. This fragment included regions corresponding to exon 2, exon 3, and the intron flanked by these two exons. Sequences were obtained from both ends of the PCR fragment and compared with a human sequence showing 95.9% identity at the amino acid level in a 73-amino acid overlap. Sequences produced in this experiment have been submitted to GenBank (accession no. AF052657)

    INTEGRAL observations of V0332+53 in outburst

    We present the analysis of a 100ksec Integral(3-100kev) observation of the transient X-ray pulsar V0332+53 inoutburst. The source is pulsating at P=4.3751+/-0.0002s with a clear double pulse from 6 kev to 60 kev. The average flux was ~550mCrab between 20 kev and 60 kev. We modeled the broad band continuum from 5 kev to 100 kev with a power-law modified by an exponential cut off. We observe three cyclotron lines: the fundamental line at 24.9+/-0.1 kev, the first harmonic at 50.5+/-0.1 kev as well as the second harmonic at71.7+/-0.8 kev, thus confirming the discovery of the harmonic lines by Coburn et al.     Does Pulsar B1757--24 Have a Fallback Disk?

    Radio pulsars are thought to spin-down primarily due to torque from magnetic dipole radiation (MDR) emitted by the time-varying stellar magnetic field as the star rotates. This assumption yields a `characteristic age' for a pulsar which has generally been assumed to be comparable to the actual age. Recent observational limits on the proper motion of pulsar B1757-24, however, revealed that the actual age (>39 kyr) of this pulsar is much greater than its MDR characteristic age (16 kyr) - calling into question the assumption of pure MDR spin-down for this and other pulsars. To explore the possible cause of this discrepancy, we consider a scenario in which the pulsar acquired an accretion disk from supernova ejecta, and the subsequent spin-down occurred under the combined action of MDR and accretion torques. A simplified model of the accretion torque involving a constant mass inflow rate at the pulsar magnetosphere can explain the age and period derivative of the pulsar for reasonable values of the pulsar magnetic field and inflow rate.     Difference in severity of porcine circovirus type two-induced pathological lesions between Landrace and Pietrain pigs

    Anecdotal information from the field suggests that there are host genetic differences in susceptibility to porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) associated disease among Landrace and Pietrain breeds. The objective of this study was to determine if a difference exists in PCV2 susceptibility between Landrace and Pi-etrain pigs under experimental conditions. Thirty-nine Landrace pigs and 39 Pietrain pigs were blocked by breed, sire, dam, and litter and randomly divided into the following 4 groups: Landrace noninoculated negative control (Landrace-NEG; n = 13), Pietrain noninoculated negative control (Pietrain-NEG; n = 13), Landrace-PCV2 (n = 26; Landrace), and Pietrain-PCV2 (n = 26; Pietrain). After waning of passively acquired anti-PCV2 antibodies, Landrace-PCV2 and Pietrain-PCV2 groups were inoculated with PCV2 isolate ISU-40895. The Landrace-NEG and Pietrain-NEG groups were housed in a separate room, remained noninoculated, and served as negative controls. All pigs in all groups were necropsied at 21 d post PCV2-inoculation. Onset of seroconversion and concentrations of anti-PCV2-IgM, anti-PCV2-IgG, and anti-PCV2 neutralizing antibodies were similar in Landrace-PCV2 and Pietrain-PCV2 groups. Furthermore, the amount of PCV2 DNA and cytokine concentrations in serum and plasma samples were not different between the 2 PCV2-inoculated groups. The severity of PCV2-associated microscopic lesions was different between Landrace and Pietrain pigs; Landrace-PCV2 pigs had significantly (P \u3c 0.05) more severe lymphoid lesions than the Pietrain-PCV2 pigs. Although the pigs originated from the same farm where their dams were commingled, passively acquired anti-PCV2-antibodies waned in Pietrain pigs by approximately 12 wk of age, whereas the majority of the Landrace pigs remained PCV2 seropositive until 18 wk of age and beyond. The results from this study indicate that a genetic difference exists between these 2 breeds of pigs in susceptibility to PCV2-associated lesions

    Fundamental limits of super-resolution microscopy by dielectric microspheres and microfibers

    In recent years, optical super-resolution by microspheres and microfibers emerged as a new paradigm in nanoscale label-free and fluorescence imaging. However, the mechanisms of such imaging are still not completely understood and the resolution values are debated. In this work, the fundamental limits of super-resolution imaging by high-index barium-titanate microspheres and silica microfibers are studied using nanoplasmonic arrays made from Au and Al. A rigorous resolution analysis is developed based on the object's convolution with the point-spread function that has width well below the conventional (∼λ/2) diffraction limit, where λ is the illumination wavelength. A resolution of ∼λ/6-λ/7 is demonstrated for imaging nanoplasmonic arrays by microspheres. Similar resolution was demonstrated for microfibers in the direction perpendicular to the fiber axis with hundreds of times larger field-of-view in comparison to microspheres. Using numerical solution of Maxwell's equations, it is shown that extraordinary close point objects can be resolved in the far field, if they oscillate out of phase.     The 1999 Hercules X-1 Anomalous Low State

    A failed main-on in the 35d cycle of Her X-1 was observed with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) on 1999 April 26. Exceptions to the normal 35d cycle have been seen only twice before; in 1983 and again 1993. We present timing and spectral results of this latest Anomalous Low State (ALS) along with comparisons to the main-on and normal low states. Pulsations were observed in the 3-18 keV band with a fractional RMS variation of (0.037+-0.003). Spectral analysis indicates that the ALS spectrum has the same shape as the main-on but is modified by heavy absorption and scattering. We find that 70% of the observed emission has passed through a cold absorber (N_H=5.0x10^{23}cm^{-2}). This partially absorbing spectral fit can be applied to the normal low state with similar results. We find that the ALS observations may be interpreted as a decrease in inclination of the accretion disk causing the central X-Ray source to be obscured over the entire 35d cycle.Comment: revised text, 6 revised figures, accepted for publication in Ap
