    Cholesteryl isobutylcarbonate

    Get PDF
Cholesteryl isobutylcarbonate, C 32H 54O 3, contains two molecules (A and B) in the asymmetric unit. The isobutylcarbonate chain of molecule A and the isoprenoid tail of molecule B are each conformationally disordered over two positions. The two distinct molecules form separate stacks along the screw axes so that they are arranged in an antiparallel array, forming monolayers with a thickness of d 001 = 19.412 A. The central regions of the monolayers are characterized by efficient molecular packing and are separated by interface regions, which are more loosely packed.open4

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the biopsychological personality profiles of traditional Korean Sasang typology based on the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) in a Korean adult clinical sample. A total of 97 adults completed the Korean version of the TCI. The participants were classified as one of three traditional Korean Sasang types (31 So-Yang, 41 Tae-Eum, 25 So-Eum) by three specialists in Sasang typology. The seven dimensions of TCI were compared between the different Sasang types using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and profile analysis. There were no significant differences in age, gender and education across the Sasang types. The TCI profile for each of the Sasang types was significantly different (profile analysis, df = 5.038, F = 3.546, P = .004). There were significant differences in the temperament dimensions of Novelty Seeking (F = 3.43, P = .036) and Harm Avoidance (F = 5.43, P = .006) among the Sasang types. The Novelty Seeking score of the So-Yang type (31.90 ± 9.87) was higher than that of the So-Eum type (25.24 ± 9.21; P = .019) while the So-Eum type (44.64 ± 8.47) scored higher on the Harm Avoidance score compared to the So-Yang type (35.16 ± 11.50; P = .003). There were no significant differences in the temperament dimension of Reward Dependence and Persistence, and the three character dimensions of Self-Directedness, Cooperativeness and Self-Transcendence. Results demonstrated distinct temperament traits associated with traditional Korean Sasang types using an objective biopsychological personality inventory. With further study, the Sasang typology may lead to enhanced clinical safety and efficacy as part of personalized medicine with traditional medicine

Entropically driven self-assembly of a strained hexanuclear indium metal-organic macrocycle and its behavior in solution

    Get PDF
The self-assembly of a polyprotic pentadentate ligand, N-cyclopentanoylaminobenzoylhydrazide (H4L4), and an In(III) nitrate hydrate in methanol led to a strained hexanuclear indium metal-organic macrocycle (In-MOM), [In(III)(6)(H2L4)(6)(NO3)(x)(solvent)(6-x)](NO3)(6-x) (where, the solvent is either methanol or a water molecule and x is the number of the nitrate anions ligated). The ligand in the doubly deprotonated state serves as an unsymmetric linear ditopic donor and the alternating indium ions in two different chelation modes serve as two different bent ditopic metal acceptors, which led to a D-3-symmetric hexanuclear In-MOM. Although the hexanuclear In-MOM is enthalpically unfavorable because of the ring strain, the combination of the soft coordination characteristic of the indium ion and the slight ligand deformation from the conjugated planar conformation allows the formation of the entropically favored hexanuclear In-MOM rather than the enthalpically favored octanuclear In-MOM. While the hexanuclear In-MOM is stable in acetonitrile, it partially dissociates into its components in dimethylsulfoxide, and then slowly reaches a new equilibrium state with several different indium species yet to be identified in addition to the free ligand.close4

Sound waves delay tomato fruit ripening by negatively regulating ethylene biosynthesis and signaling genes

    Get PDF
AbstractRegulation of tomato fruit ripening may help extend fruit shelf life and prevent losses due to spoilage. Here, tomato fruit were investigated whether sound treatment could delay their ripening. Harvested fruit were treated with low-frequency sound waves (1kHz) for 6h, and then monitored various characteristics of the fruit over 14-days at 23±1°C. Seven days after the treatment, 85% of the treated fruit were green, versus fewer than 50% of the non-treated fruit. Most of the tomato fruit had transitioned to the red ripening stage by 14 days after treatment. Ethylene production and respiration rate were lower in the sound-treated than non-treated tomatoes. Furthermore, changes in surface color and flesh firmness were delayed in the treated fruit. To investigate how sound wave treatment effects on fruit ripening, the expression of ethylene-related genes was analyzed by quantitative real-time RT-PCR analysis. The expression level of several ethylene biosynthetic (ACS2, ACS4, ACO1, E4 and E8) and ripening-regulated (RIN, TAGL1, HB-1, NOR, CNR) genes was influenced by sound wave treatment. These results indicated that sound wave treatment delays tomato fruit ripening by altering the expression of important genes in the ethylene biosynthesis and ethylene signaling pathways

Fabrication of pyramidal probes with various periodic patterns and a single nanopore

    Get PDF
The nanometer-scale patterned pyramidal probe with an electron beam-induced nanopore on the pyramid apex is an excellent candidate for an optical biosensor. The nanoapertures surrounded with various periodic groove patterns on the pyramid sides were fabricated using a focused ion beam technique, where the optical characteristics of the fabricated apertures with rectangular, circular, and elliptical groove patterns were investigated. The elliptical groove patterns on the pyramid were designed to maintain an identical distance between the grooves and the apex for the surface waves and, among the three patterns, the authors observed the highest optical transmission from the elliptically patterned pyramidal probe. A 103-fold increase of the transmitted optical intensity was observed after patterning with elliptical grooves, even without an aperture on the pyramid apex. The nanopore on the apex of the pyramid was fabricated using electron beam irradiation and was optically characterized

Psychological Profile of Sasang Typology: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
A systematic review of studies related to the psychological characteristics of Sasang types was conducted with the goal of delineating generalizable psychological profiles based on Sasang typology, a traditional Korean medical typology with medical herbs and acupuncture that is characterized as personalized medicine. Journal articles pertaining to Sasang typology were collected using five electronic database systems in Korea and in the USA. As a result, 64 potentially relevant studies were identified and 21 peer-reviewed research articles that employed psychometric inventories were included. Beginning with the use of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory in 1992, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, NEO-Personality Inventory, Temperament and Character Inventory and other personality assessment tools were employed in the identified studies. Because data synthesis could not be carried out due to the heterogeneity of the studies, the present review article sought to delineate the mutual relevance of the studies based on research results pertaining to the correlation between the aforementioned psychological assessment instruments. Results of the review indicate that two super-factors, Extraversion and Neuroticism, serve as the foundation in regards to delineating personality constructs, such that the So-Yang type scored high on the Extraversion dimension and low on the Neuroticism dimension, while the So-Eum type scored low on the Extraversion dimension and high on the Neuroticism dimension. The present systematic review indicates that Sasang typology shares similarities with the Western psychological tradition
