    K-12 Writing Teachers’ Careerspan Development: Participatory Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Writing

    This narrative grounded theory study examines 19 US K–12 teachers’ development of pedagogical content knowledge of writing (PCKW) across their careers. Building on writing pedagogies and career cycle theories, we invited writing teachers to tell stories of critical experiences that contributed to their development. Findings indicate that teachers’ understanding of writing, being writers, and teaching writers were propelled by various critical experiences--both personal and professional. Our model shows that these experiences prompted teachers to engage in participatory PCKW to cultivate development. Implications are that writing teachers need communities of practice, mentors, and ongoing participatory engagements to sustain process pedagogies

    Resilience: Easy to use but hard to define

    First conceptualized in the 1970s, resilience has become a popular term in the ecological literature, used in the title, abstract, or keywords of approximately 1% of papers identified by ISI Web of Science in the field of environmental sciences and ecology in 2011. However, many papers make only passing reference to the term and do not explain what resilience means in the context of their study system, despite there being a number of possible definitions. In an attempt to determine how resilience is being used in ecological studies, we surveyed 234 papers published between 2004 and 2011 that were identified under the topic “resilience” by ISI Web of Science. Of these, 38% used the word resilience fewer than three times (often in the abstract or keyword list), 66% did not define the term, and 71% did not provide a citation to the resilience literature. Studies that defined resilience most often discussed it as pertaining to an entire ecosystem under continuous rather than discrete disturbance. Given the complex nature of this concept, we believe that care should be taken to properly describe what is meant by the term resilience in ecological studies

    Impact of Natural Blind Spot Location on Perimetry.

    We study the spatial distribution of natural blind spot location (NBSL) and its impact on perimetry. Pattern deviation (PD) values of 11,449 reliable visual fields (VFs) that are defined as clinically unaffected based on summary indices were extracted from 11,449 glaucoma patients. We modeled NBSL distribution using a two-dimensional non-linear regression approach and correlated NBSL with spherical equivalent (SE). Additionally, we compared PD values of groups with longer and shorter distances than median, and larger and smaller angles than median between NBSL and fixation. Mean and standard deviation of horizontal and vertical NBSL were 14.33° ± 1.37° and -2.06° ± 1.27°, respectively. SE decreased with increasing NBSL (correlation: r = -0.14, p \u3c 0.001). For NBSL distances longer than median distance (14.32°), average PD values decreased in the upper central (average difference for significant points (ADSP): -0.18 dB) and increased in the lower nasal VF region (ADSP: 0.14 dB). For angles in the direction of upper hemifield relative to the median angle (-8.13°), PD values decreased in lower nasal (ADSP: -0.11 dB) and increased in upper temporal VF areas (ADSP: 0.19 dB). In conclusion, we demonstrate that NBSL has a systematic effect on the spatial distribution of VF sensitivity

    Atrial cardiopathy and cognitive impairment

    Cognitive impairment involves complex interactions between multiple pathways and mechanisms, one of which being cardiac disorders. Atrial cardiopathy (AC) is a structural and functional disorder of the left atrium that may be a substrate for other cardiac disorders such as atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF). The association between AF and HF and cognitive decline is clear; however, the relationship between AC and cognition requires further investigation. Studies have shown that several markers of AC, such as increased brain natriuretic peptide and left atrial enlargement, are associated with an increased risk for cognitive impairment. The pathophysiology of cognitive decline in patients with AC is not yet well understood. Advancing our understanding of the relationship between AC and cognition may point to important treatable targets and inform future therapeutic advancements. This review presents our current understanding of the diagnosis of AC, as well as clinical characteristics and potential pathways involved in the association between AC and cognitive impairment

    Governing through community-based research: Lessons from the Canadian HIV research sector

    AbstractThe “general public” and specific “communities” are increasingly being integrated into scientific decision-making. This shift emphasizes “scientific citizenship” and collaboration between interdisciplinary scientists, lay people, and multi-sector stakeholders (universities, healthcare, and government). The objective of this paper is to problematize these developments through a theoretically informed reading of empirical data that describes the consequences of bringing together actors in the Canadian HIV community-based research (CBR) movement. Drawing on Foucauldian “governmentality” the complex inner workings of the impetus to conduct collaborative research are explored. The analysis offered surfaces the ways in which a formalized approach to CBR, as promoted through state funding mechanisms, determines the structure and limits of engagement while simultaneously reinforcing the need for finer grained knowledge about marginalized communities. Here, discourses about risk merge with notions of “scientific citizenship” to implicate both researchers and communities in a process of governance

    Characterization of Shewanella oneidensis MtrC: a cell-surface decaheme cytochrome involved in respiratory electron transport to extracellular electron acceptors

    MtrC is a decaheme c-type cytochrome associated with the outer cell membrane of Fe(III)-respiring species of the Shewanella genus. It is proposed to play a role in anaerobic respiration by mediating electron transfer to extracellular mineral oxides that can serve as terminal electron acceptors. The present work presents the first spectropotentiometric and voltammetric characterization of MtrC, using protein purified from Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Potentiometric titrations, monitored by UV–vis absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, reveal that the hemes within MtrC titrate over a broad potential range spanning between approximately +100 and approximately -500 mV (vs. the standard hydrogen electrode). Across this potential window the UV–vis absorption spectra are characteristic of low-spin c-type hemes and the EPR spectra reveal broad, complex features that suggest the presence of magnetically spin-coupled low-spin c-hemes. Non-catalytic protein film voltammetry of MtrC demonstrates reversible electrochemistry over a potential window similar to that disclosed spectroscopically. The voltammetry also allows definition of kinetic properties of MtrC in direct electron exchange with a solid electrode surface and during reduction of a model Fe(III) substrate. Taken together, the data provide quantitative information on the potential domain in which MtrC can operate

    Development of a Novel Aspirin Suppository Formulation and Evaluation of the Acetylation of COX-1 Via a HT-29/Caco-2 Cell Absorption Assay Used to Detect the Absorption of Aspirin Formulated With Various Bases and Excipients

    As the baby-boomer population ages, hospitalization rates will rise, increasing the number of patients who are NPO. Research indicates that aspirin use also increases with advanced age. With the increased prevalence of this demographic, there continues to be a growing need for alternative dosage forms for aspirin administration. A common and limited-risk alternative is rectally administered aspirin. However, there appears to be only one commercially available aspirin suppository and it has yielded erratic results as shown in previous research. Aspirin is considered a pro-drug; once it is inside the body, the acidic environment cleaves the aspirin molecule down to salicylic acid, its active form. Rectal cells may not provide an acidic environment needed to cleave the aspirin molecule into salicylic acid, thereby inhibiting the absorption and rate of onset of the drug. With this thought in mind and with the erratic results from the literature, the aim of this study, to be completed by summer of 2015, is to create a novel aspirin suppository. The study will be a prospective preclinical in-vitro design conducted in the Cedarville University Pharmaceutical Sciences lab. The samples will include two colonic adenocarcinoma cell lines, Caco-2 and HT-29. A standard curve will be developed as a baseline by using a 12(S)-HETE ELISA Assay using purified 12(S)-HETE. The two cell lines will be cultured, then incubated. Aspirin will be added to the samples and incubated again for 30 minutes. After incubation, medium samples will be taken and the same ELISA Assay will be performed on the results. The cell line that yields the most consistent results will be selected. The various aspirin formulations will be tested on this cell line in the same fashion. The ELISA assay will be performed and the concentration of 12(S)-HETE will be determined, plotted, and compared to the standard curve. A repeated-measures ANOVA will then be performed to analyze statistical significance

    Understanding the links between the activity of supermassive black holes (SMBH) at the centres of galaxies and their host dark matter haloes is a key question in modern astrophysics. The final data release of the SDSS-IV eBOSS provides the largest contemporary spectroscopic sample of galaxies and QSOs. Using this sample and covering the redshift interval z=0.71.1z=0.7-1.1, we have measured the clustering properties of the eBOSS QSOs, Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs) and Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs). We have also measured the fraction of QSOs as a function of the overdensity defined by the galaxy population. Using these measurements, we investigate how QSOs populate and sample the galaxy population, and how the host dark-matter haloes of QSOs sample the underlying halo distribution. We find that the probability of a galaxy hosting a QSO is independent of the host dark matter halo mass of the galaxy. We also find that about 60\% of eBOSS QSOs are hosted by LRGs and about 20-40\% of QSOs are hosted by satellite galaxies. We find a slight preference for QSOs to populate satellite galaxies over central galaxies. This is connected to the host halo mass distribution of different types of galaxies.
