    TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNA) have attracted scientific interest due to the combination of functional material properties with controllable nanostructure. Superior properties of TNA, including vectorial pathway of e− transport, minimized e− recombination, and high specific surface area render them as the most promising candidate for environment remediation, energy conversion and biocompatibility applications. The superior properties and efficacy of the TNA in various applications influenced by structural characteristics such as pore size, length and wall thickness. Therefore in this chapter the effect of various electrochemical parameters such as applied voltage, anodization time, electrolyte composition on the formation of controlled dimension of TNA in aqueous and organic electrolytes are reviewed

    Multiwall carbon nanotube promising route for removal of chromium from wastewater via batch column mechanism

    Water pollution regarding heavy metals issue keep lingering our days from time to time, and some problems even left unattended. The most crucial cause of this pollution is the industrial waste, especially waste water that had been released into the drainage system without being treated first. This activity had been done illegally and left a huge impact towards the environment also human. In this study multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are promising route for removal of chromium was investigated. Results revealed that the optimum conditions for highest removal (99.97%) of chromium are pH7,0.04g of MWCNTs dosage, and flowrate of 20.83 mL/s. Based on adsorption isotherm for this experiment, the amount of chromium adsorbed, qm calculated was 50.51 mg of chromium/gram of MWCNTs. From the results obtained, it had been proved that MWCNTs can be used as an effective adsorbent in chromium removal from aqueous solution due to high adsorption capacity

    Localised Delivery of Cisplatin from Chitosan-Coated Titania Nanotube Array Nanosystems Targeting Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

    Pupose: Cisplatin (CDDP), while amongst the recognised chemotherapeutic drugs currently available, is known to have limitations; the lack of a single treatment approach and non-specific targeted therapies. Therefore, the development of an innovative strategy that could achieve localised CDDP treatment is an urgent undertaking. Recent advances in titania nanotube arrays (TNAs) technology have demonstrated promising applications for localised chemotherapeutic drug treatment. The present work investigated the efficiency of a TNA nanosystem for the localised CDDP treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: Two models of the TNA nanosystem were prepared: CDDP loaded onto the TNA nanosystem surface (CDDP-TNA) and the other consisted of chitosan-coated CDDP-TNA. CDDP release from these two nanosystems was comprehensively tested on the NPC cells NPC/HK-1 and C666-1. The NPC cytotoxicity profile of the two CDDP-TNA nanosystems was evaluated after incubation for 24, 48 and 72 hours. Intracellular damage profiles were studied using fluorescence microscopy analysis with Hoechst 33342, acridine orange and propidium iodide. Results: The half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of CDDP at 24 hours were 0.50 mM for NPC/HK-1 and 0.05 mM for C666-1. CDDP in the CDDP-TNA and chitosan-coated CDDPTNA models presented a significant degree of NPC inhibition (P<0.05) after 24, 48 and 72 hours of exposure. The outcome revealed cellular damage and shrinkage of the cell membranes after 48 hours of exposure to CDDP-TNA. Conclusion: This in vitro work demonstrated the effectiveness of TNA nanosystems for the localised CDDP treatment of NPC cells. Further in vivo studies are needed to support the findings

    Surface Modification and Bioactivity of Anodic Ti6Al4V Alloy

    The present study deals with surface modification of Ti6Al4V alloy via anodization technique. The morphology, structure, adhesion and bioactivity of Ti6Al4V alloy after anodization process were investigated in detail. The influence of fluoride content and direct circuit (DC) applied voltage during anodization of Ti6Al4V alloy in a bath with electrolytes composed of ethylene glycol (EG) and ammonium fluoride (NH4F) were considered. It was found that the average pore sizes and length of nanoporous or nanotubes were increasing with the fluoride content and applied voltage. A minimum of 3 wt% of NH4F is required to grow a self-organized nanotube arrays. As the fluoride content was increased to 5 wt%, TiO2 nanotubes with average diameter of 110 nm and 3.4 microm lengths were successfully synthesized. It is noteworthy to point out that the rate of the nanotube formation was increasing up to 9 microm thick bioactive TiO2 nanotubes layer as anodization time was increased to 3 h. Based on the results obtained, the PA6 cells cultured on anodic Ti6Al4V alloy showed highest level of cell viability and greater cell adhesion compared to the flat Ti6Al4V foil substrate. In fact, highly ordered nanotubes structure on Ti6Al4V alloy can provide beneficial effects for PA6 cells in attachment and proliferation

    The impact of quality management systems on construction performance in the North West of England

    As the total construction output in the North West of England (NWE) is forecast to rise by an average of 2.5% over the next five years. It is imperative for organizations in the region to improve their overall construction performance, particularly if they are to hit the targets presented by UK Government in the construction 2025 report. Despite the known benefits of quality management systems (QMS) its implementation in relation to construction performance is very limited, particularly in the UK. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine whether QMS can affect construction performance in the NWE. A pragmatic mixed method approach of sequential explanatory strategy was adopted to conduct this research. This initially involved a quantitative approach of questionnaire surveys to gain opinions and views of a representative sample of industry professionals based in the NWE. The quantitative results were analyzed to discover relationships in the data and further formulate the questions for the qualitative interviews. Three interviews with leading industry professionals were then conducted and the data was analyzed using a thematic approach. The themes identified in the interviews were then cross-referenced with the data discovered in the questionnaire survey and literature review. The findings provide a clear indication that the implementation of a QMS has a positive effect on construction performance in the NWE. Immediate improvements in efficiency of a construction organization when implementing a QMS were discovered, including greater managerial control and the recording and reduction in defects. Long term effects of changing company attitude by setting out company requirements and responsibilities through highlighting the significance of quality, and furthermore encouraging a culture of co-operation and teamwork, were also proven to increase construction performance as time progresses. To further enhance this research the focus could be on the whole of the UK. However, a greater amount of time would be required to gain the required representative sample. Furthermore, although the questionnaire survey was distributed equally within the selected sample, a greater number of respondents working for contractors responded. Therefore, the respondents of the questionnaire survey were not equal in terms of organization (client, contractor, sub-contractor, project manager). According to the best knowledge of the authors and through searching many sources, there are no specific studies examining QMS and their effect on construction performance in the UK and particularly in the NWE. Therefore, it is believed the study is the first of its kind. The study discovered many findings that can be considered as a contribution to practice and theory.     Extensively drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in a Thai hospital: a molecular epidemiologic analysis and identification of bactericidal Polymyxin B-based combinations

    BACKGROUND: Limited knowledge of the local molecular epidemiology and the paucity of new effective antibiotics has resulted in an immense challenge in the control and treatment of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Acinetobacter baumannii infections in Thailand. Antimicrobial combination regimens may be the only feasible treatment option in such cases. We sought to characterize the local molecular epidemiology and assess the bactericidal activity of various antibiotics individually and in combination against XDR A. baumannii in a Thai hospital. METHODS: All XDR A. baumannii isolates from Thammasat University Hospital were collected between October 2010 and May 2011. Susceptibility testing was conducted according to reference broth dilution methods. Pulse-field gel electrophoresis was used to genotype the isolates. Carbapenemase genes were detected using polymerase chain reaction. In vitro testing of clinically-relevant concentrations of imipenem, meropenem, doripenem, rifampicin and tigecycline alone and in combination with polymyxin B was conducted using multiple combination bactericidal testing. RESULTS: Forty-nine polymyxin B-susceptible XDR A. baumannii isolates were identified. bla(OXA-23) and bla(OXA-51) genes were detected in all isolates. Eight clonally related clusters were identified, resulting in the initiation of several infection control measures. Imipenem, meropenem, doripenem, rifampicin, and tigecycline in combination with PB respectively, exhibited bactericidal killing in 100%, 100%, 98.0%, 100% and 87.8% isolates respectively at 24 hours. CONCLUSION: Molecular epidemiologic analysis can aid the early detection of infection outbreak within the institution, resulting in the rapid containment of the outbreak. Imipenem/meropenem/rifampicin in combination with polymyxin B demonstrated consistent bactericidal effect against 49 bla(OXA-23)-harbouring XDR A. baumannii clinical isolates, suggesting a role of combination therapy in the treatment of these infections

It is a part of an incorporated endeavour to further improve the aptitude, potential, effectiveness and competitiveness of the industry as well as to diminish the industry’s dependence on foreign labour. This is also an attempt in the Malaysian construction industry to encourage positive inroads in matters associated to construction-site safety with regards to a working environment which is cleaner, more convenient and more organized

    In spite of having sufficient fire safety system installed in buildings, the incidence of fire hazard becomes the furthermost and supreme threat to health and safety, as well as property to any community. In order to make sure that the safety of the building and its users, the fundamental features depends on the fire precaution system and equipment which should be according to the standard requirements. Nevertheless, the awareness on fire safety could necessarily alleviate the damages or rate of fatality during the event of fire. This paper presents the results on the investigation of fire safety awareness and management, concentrating on shopping mall. The endeavour of this study is to explore the level of fire safety knowledge of the users in the mall, and to study the effectiveness level of fire safety management in a mall. From the study, public awareness is highly related to understanding human behaviour and their personal background. The respondents’ levels of awareness are rather low, which reflects on their poor action when facing emergency situation during fire. The most effective methods identified to improve the awareness and effectiveness of fire safety level is through involvement in related fire safety programmes, distribution of pamphlets or brochures on fire safety and appointing specific personnel for Emergency Response Team in the mall
