    A duality based approach to the minimizing total variation flow in the space HsH^{-s}

    We consider a gradient flow of the total variation in a negative Sobolev space HsH^{-s} (0s1)(0\leq s \leq 1) under the periodic boundary condition. If s=0s=0, the flow is nothing but the classical total variation flow. If s=1s=1, this is the fourth order total variation flow. We consider a convex variational problem which gives an implicit-time discrete scheme for the flow. By a duality based method, we give a simple numerical scheme to calculate this minimizing problem numerically and discuss convergence of a forward-backward splitting scheme. Several numerical experiments are given

    A variational algorithm for the detection of line segments

    In this paper we propose an algorithm for the detection of edges in images that is based on topological asymptotic analysis. Motivated from the Mumford--Shah functional, we consider a variational functional that penalizes oscillations outside some approximate edge set, which we represent as the union of a finite number of thin strips, the width of which is an order of magnitude smaller than their length. In order to find a near optimal placement of these strips, we compute an asymptotic expansion of the functional with respect to the strip size. This expansion is then employed for defining a (topological) gradient descent like minimization method. As opposed to a recently proposed method by some of the authors, which uses coverings with balls, the usage of strips includes some directional information into the method, which can be used for obtaining finer edges and can also result in a reduction of computation times

    A variational method for quantitative photoacoustic tomography with piecewise constant coefficients

    Full text link
    In this article, we consider the inverse problem of determining spatially heterogeneous absorption and diffusion coefficients from a single measurement of the absorbed energy (in the steady-state diffusion approximation of light transfer). This problem, which is central in quantitative photoacoustic tomography, is in general ill-posed since it admits an infinite number of solution pairs. We show that when the coefficients are known to be piecewise constant functions, a unique solution can be obtained. For the numerical determination of the coefficients, we suggest a variational method based based on an Ambrosio-Tortorelli-approximation of a Mumford-Shah-like functional, which we implemented numerically and tested on simulated two-dimensional data

    The aim of this study is to assess the level of sports men and women swimming freestyle and butterfly at the European Championships in London in 2016. The study used the results of the European Championship, which took place in London in 2016. The event was played on a large 50-meter pool. Used materials from www.len.eu.The most balanced level of women presented at the 200 meters dolphin. The distance of 100 meters in men is more even temporarily, where women come see a big difference over time

    Physiological basis of human longevity: the concept of a cascade of human aging mechanism

    Get PDF
    The research is devoted to the fundamental issue of medicine and biology - the study of factors limiting the life span of a person. As a model, the system of adaptation of the human body to the forces of natural gravity is chosen, the disadaptation to which manifests itself in falls and everyday injuries. The object of the study was the selection of severe fractures of bone tissue due to fall, taken in the age aspect. Statistical and meta-analytical research methods were used. It is shown that the age-related increase in mortality due to household falls, coming to severe bone fractures, is non-linear and increases in geometric progression. As a result of the coincidence of the age characteristics of bone fragility and age-related kidney function, an assumption is made about the role of involution of the renal tissue in the development of osteoporosis in the elderly and the need for a new approach to the prevention of osteoporosis and domestic injuries

    Asymptotic Expansions for Higher Order Elliptic Equations with an Application to Quantitative Photoacoustic Tomography

    Full text link
    In this paper, we derive new asymptotic expansions for the solutions of higher order elliptic equations in the presence of small inclusions. As a byproduct, we derive a topological derivative based algorithm for the reconstruction of piecewise smooth functions. This algorithm can be used for edge detection in imaging, topological optimization, and for inverse problems, such as Quantitative Photoacoustic Tomography, for which we demonstrate the effectiveness of our asymptotic expansion method numerically

    Purpose: comparative analysis of physical development parameters of Ukrainian city pupils in dynamics of 35 years monitoring period, determination of level and harmony of physical development of modern pupils. Participants: it was examined 2453 city children and teenagers of 6-17 year old (1224 boys and 1229 girls). Comparison was carried out with results of 1974 year. The analysis of physical development was carried out according to the official tables containing regression scales of the body length. Results: it is observed reliable (p<0,01) and highly reliable (p<0,001) body length augmentation in comparison with equals in age in 1970th in all age and gender groups of pupils (except 8 year old children). Since 11 year old, modern children were authentically taller (р<0,001) than equals in age in 1974. Comparison of body weight of boys determined that from 11 up to 13 year old modern pupils reliably exceed equals in age in 1970th. It is determined similar differences in 12-13 year old girls. It is observed reliable augmentation of chest circumference in 12-14 year old girls and also in 11-12 and 15-17 year old boys in comparison with equals in age in 1974 year. There are no gender differences in distribution of children by the level of physical development. Conclusions: it is determined the following consistent patterns and features of physical development of Ukrainian city pupils during 1970th – 2000th years: no more than 57-59% of pupils have average and harmonious physical development; every 6th boy and every 5th girl have overweight; it is observed high-quality and quantitative reliable deterioration in physical development and morphofunctional state in children of both genders during study at school. It is most expressed in boys; from 1st up to the 4th form pupils with disharmonious development becomes in 2,5 times more weighty (about 12%), and up to 9th form – in 7 times (about 20% respectively)
