    Towards building general framework for designing knowledge sharing tool based on actor network theory

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the needs to understand the barrier and determinant factors in knowledge sharing (KS), to find the common ones and subsequently to build a general framework that can be referred to in designing a KS tool that addresses the common factors. Design/methodology/approach: The approach comprises of two major steps which are to survey the past literature to determine the most common barriers and determinant factors from various unique KS domains and to qualify the factor as the common one based on its presence in at least three to five KS domains. The grounded theory is used to analyze the past literature and to perform categorization. Findings: This paper helps in the summarization of categories and subcategories of barriers and determinants and demonstration on the mapping between them. Research limitations/implications: This paper has not proved the actual use of the framework in building a KS tool based on the framework. Practical implications: The common factors are based on at least 60 references of KS implementation such that it is useful for large area of application domains that require building KS tools. Originality/value: This paper presents the understanding on the common factors and association between the barriers and determinants in building the general framework in which the application of the framework is demonstrated using actor network theory

    The UAE Employees’ Perceptions towards Factors for Sustaining Big Data Implementation and Continuous Impact on Their Organization’s Performance

    The UAE has officially launched the Big Data initiative in the year 2022; however, the interest in and adoption of Big Data technologies and strategies had started much earlier in the private and public sectors. This research aims to explore the perceptions of the UAE employees on factors needed to implement sustainable Big Data and the continuous impact on their organizational performance. A total of 257 employees were randomly selected for an online survey, and data were collected using a Likert-style five-point scale that was tested for validity and reliability. The findings indicate that employees believe that Big Data Sustainable Implementation leads to Business Performance. Additionally, employees consider factors such as Big Data Architecture Quality, Human Cognitive Factors, and Organizational Readiness to significantly impact on Sustainable Implementation. Further, a moderating impact of Human Cognitive Factors was found on the relationship between Big Data Architecture Quality and Sustainable Implementation. The study provides managerial insights and recommendations for policymaking

    Stability Criteria for SIS Epidemiological Models under Switching Policies

    We study the spread of disease in an SIS model. The model considered is a time-varying, switched model, in which the parameters of the SIS model are subject to abrupt change. We show that the joint spectral radius can be used as a threshold parameter for this model in the spirit of the basic reproduction number for time-invariant models. We also present conditions for persistence and the existence of periodic orbits for the switched model and results for a stochastic switched model

    Fisheries co-management as an alternative to centralized command and control fisheries management is often suggested as a solution to the problems of fisheries resource use conflicts and overexploitation. This paper highlights some elements of the transaction costs under a fisheries co-management system. The transaction costs can be categorized into three major cost items: (i) information costs, (ii) collective fisheries decision-making costs, and (iii) collective operational costs. An approach to measuring transaction costs of fisheries co-management systems both in static and dynamic processes is also proposed. There is a need to empirically evaluate the nature of the transaction costs involved in fisheries co-management institutions as a basis for evaluating the efficiency or net benefits of co-managed fisheries compared to centrally managed fisheries.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

    Determination of carbohydrate and β-carotene content of some vegetables consumed in Kano metropolis, Nigeria

    A study was carried out to determine the soluble carbohydrate and β-carotene content of some selected vegetables which include sorrel (Hibiscus subdariffa), carrot (Daucus carota) and Moringa (Moringa oleifera).Soluble carbohydrate was determined by Anthrone method Spectrophotometry at wavelength of 620nm. It was found that Moringa leaves had the highest percentage of carbohydrate (10.1%) followed by carrot with (8.7%), while sorrel had the least (7.1%). The β-carotene content was determined by spectrophotometry and the values obtained were used to estimate retinol equivalent (vitamin A content) of the vegetables. Moringa leaves were found to have the highest concentration of β-carotene (2.33 x 102 μg/l) followed by sorrel with 1.264 x 102μg/l, while carrot had the least value of 3.03 x 101μg/l. The findings of the investigation have revealed varying levels of carbohydrate and β-carotene content in the vegetables analysed which have direct bearing on their nutritional status

    A survey on drug related problems in cervical cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria

    A drug-related problem (DRP) is an event or circumstance involving drug therapy that actually or potentially interferes with desired outcome. The complexities in drug regimens used in cervical cancer chemotherapy has led to more serious problems. The aim of this study is to investigate DRPs in cervical cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The study was a retrospective cross sectional study on patients receiving cervical cancer chemotherapy at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria (ABUTH). Patients’ medication charts were reviewed from July, 2015 to June, 2016. Data were collected using the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (PCNE) Classification of DRP V 6.20. A total of 224 DRPs cases were identified from 65 cervical cancer patients. The DRPs were mostly on treatment effectiveness (28.1%), adverse reaction (29.0%), and cost (26.8%), while the causes were majorly drug selection (28.1%) and dose selection (29.0%). The risk factors for the DRPs were found to be comorbidities and polypharmacy. In conclusion, DRPs were common among cervical cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at ABUTH. Pharmacist interventions to achieve a better therapeutic outcome are necessary.Keywords: Cervical cancer, chemotherapy, drug related problem, pharmacist, polypharmac

    Spot deformation and replication in the two-dimensional Belousov-Zhabotinski reaction in water-in-oil microemulsion

    In the limit of large diffusivity ratio, spot-like solutions in the two-dimensional Belousov-Zhabotinski reaction in water-in-oil microemulsion are studied. It is shown analytically that such spots undergo an instability as the diffusivity ratio is decreased. An instability threshold is derived. For spots of small radius, it is shown that this instability leads to a spot splitting into precisely two spots. For larger spots, it leads to deformation, fingering patterns and space-filling curves. Numerical simulations are shown to be in close agreement with the analytical predictions.Comment: To appear, PR
