The Explosion in the Law - \u3cem\u3eWith an Analysis of the Book, the Law Revolt, by Melvin Belli\u3cem\u3e

I have just finished reading an absorbing work, The Law Revolt, by Melvin Belli. In it Mr. Belli tells of the monumentally drastic changes which have occurred in our substantive and procedural law during the last half century or so. Any other author would probably have named a similar work, Development in the Law, or The Evolution of Law, but Melvin Belli, with an ever-youthful enthusiasm for all things appertaining to his dedicated profession, would never attach so staid a label to any handiwork of his. And yet, this internationally famous lawyer, with all the vividness of his personality, was really conservative in his naming of what has recently happened in the legal universe

Probabilistic Model and Solution Algorithm for the Electricity Retailers in the Italian Market

    Get PDF
The paper considers the problem of maximizing the profits of a retailer operating in the Italian electricity market. The problem consists in selecting the contracts portfolio and in defining the bidding strategy in the wholesales market while respecting the technical and regulatory constraints. A novel solution method based on a enhanced discovery of the search domain in the simulated annealing technique has been developed for its solution and a set of realistic test problems have been generated for its validation. The experimental results show that our method outperforms the standard simulated annealing by an improvement gap of 20,48% in average

Cross-country learning from patents: an analysis of citations flows in innovation trajectories

AbstractThis study proposes a methodological approach to investigate cross-country creativity/knowledge flows by analyzing patent citation networks, taking the aircraft, aviation and cosmonautics (AAC) industry as a case study. It aims at shedding some light on the following research questions: (a) how cross-country creative/learning flows can be investigated; (b) have countries of current patent owners benefited from patent acquisitions. In fact, despite the well-established economic interest for (analyzing and forecasting) innovation trajectories, this research area is still unexplored, thus, motivating the need for such study. Over 43,000,000 patents have been analyzed whereby: (a) owners have performed cross-country patent acquisitions; (b) acquired patents (granted within 2005–2009) are cited by subsequent patents (2010–2015). Methodology and results are scalable to other industries and can be exploited by managers and policy makers to: (a) help firms forecasting innovation trajectories; (b) support governments in designing/implementing measures nurturing patented innovations in industries deemed relevant to national interest
