    On a new theoretical framework for RR Lyrae stars I: the metallicity dependence

    We present new nonlinear, time-dependent convective hydrodynamical models of RR Lyrae stars computed assuming a constant helium-to-metal enrichment ratio and a broad range in metal abundances (Z=0.0001--0.02). The stellar masses and luminosities adopted to construct the pulsation models were fixed according to detailed central He burning Horizontal Branch evolutionary models. The pulsation models cover a broad range in stellar luminosity and effective temperatures and the modal stability is investigated for both fundamental and first overtones. We predict the topology of the instability strip as a function of the metal content and new analytical relations for the edges of the instability strip in the observational plane. Moreover, a new analytical relation to constrain the pulsation mass of double pulsators as a function of the period ratio and the metal content is provided. We derive new Period-Radius-Metallicity relations for fundamental and first-overtone pulsators. They agree quite well with similar empirical and theoretical relations in the literature. From the predicted bolometric light curves, transformed into optical (UBVRI) and near-infrared (JHK) bands, we compute the intensity-averaged mean magnitudes along the entire pulsation cycle and, in turn, new and homogenous metal-dependent (RIJHK) Period-Luminosity relations. Moreover, we compute new dual and triple band optical, optical--NIR and NIR Period-Wesenheit-Metallicity relations. Interestingly, we find that the optical Period-W(V,B-V) is independent of the metal content and that the accuracy of individual distances is a balance between the adopted diagnostics and the precision of photometric and spectroscopic datasets.Comment: 51 pages, 20 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication on Ap

    High resolution spectroscopic analysis of seven giants in the bulge globular cluster NGC 6723

    Globular clusters associated with the Galactic bulge are important tracers of stellar populations in the inner Galaxy. High resolution analysis of stars in these clusters allows us to characterize them in terms of kinematics, metallicity, and individual abundances, and to compare these fingerprints with those characterizing field populations. We present iron and element ratios for seven red giant stars in the globular cluster NGC~6723, based on high resolution spectroscopy. High resolution spectra (R∼48 000R\sim48~000) of seven K giants belonging to NGC 6723 were obtained with the FEROS spectrograph at the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope. Photospheric parameters were derived from ∼130\sim130 FeI and FeII transitions. Abundance ratios were obtained from line-to-line spectrum synthesis calculations on clean selected features. An intermediate metallicity of [Fe/H]=−0.98±0.08=-0.98\pm0.08 dex and a heliocentric radial velocity of vhel=−96.6±1.3 kms−1v_{hel}=-96.6\pm1.3~km s^{-1} were found for NGC 6723. Alpha-element abundances present enhancements of [O/Fe]=0.29±0.18[O/Fe]=0.29\pm0.18 dex, [Mg/Fe]=0.23±0.10[Mg/Fe]=0.23\pm0.10 dex, [Si/Fe]=0.36±0.05[Si/Fe]=0.36\pm0.05 dex, and [Ca/Fe]=0.30±0.07[Ca/Fe]=0.30\pm0.07 dex. Similar overabundance is found for the iron-peak Ti with [Ti/Fe]=0.24±0.09[Ti/Fe]=0.24\pm0.09 dex. Odd-Z elements Na and Al present abundances of [Na/Fe]=0.00±0.21[Na/Fe]=0.00\pm0.21 dex and [Al/Fe]=0.31±0.21[Al/Fe]=0.31\pm0.21 dex, respectively. Finally, the s-element Ba is also enhanced by [Ba/Fe]=0.22±0.21[Ba/Fe]=0.22\pm0.21 dex. The enhancement levels of NGC 6723 are comparable to those of other metal-intermediate bulge globular clusters. In turn, these enhancement levels are compatible with the abundance profiles displayed by bulge field stars at that metallicity. This hints at a possible similar chemical evolution with globular clusters and the metal-poor of the bulge going through an early prompt chemical enrichment

    Observational study on lameness recovery in 10 dogs affected by iliopsoas injury and submitted to a physiotherapeutic approach

    This preliminary study has investigated the outcome of physiotherapy in 10 dogs affected by a primary lesion of the iliopsoas muscle and the potential effects of sex, age, and breed on recovery. Ten dogs with primary injury of the iliopsoas muscle were retrospectively included in this study. Dogs were submitted to a rehabilitation program, characterized by a multimodal approach, including physical therapies and modalities. After recovery, patients were submitted to a further support period of rehabilitation to promote muscle strengthening and limit injury recurrence during their return to normal functional and sports activity. Border collies were highly represented. The recovery of lameness occurred after a mean of 22.6 ± 14.7 (median 18) days with a median number of five sessions. None of the examined variables affected the recovery time, except for the border collie breed, which showed a significantly faster recovery time; however, there was no difference between the breeds with regard to the number of sessions. Multimodal rehabilitation therapy may promote lameness recovery of mild-to-moderate iliopsoas lesions within 3 weeks. This preliminary study reports a clinical approach and recovery of primary iliopsoas lesions, findings that can provide clinicians with useful prognostic information for dogs involved in sports activities

    Variable stars and stellar populations in Andromeda XXI: II. Another merged galaxy satellite of M31?

    B and V time-series photometry of the M31 dwarf spheroidal satellite Andromeda XXI (And XXI) was obtained with the Large Binocular Cameras at the Large Binocular Telescope. We have identified 50 variables in And XXI, of which 41 are RR Lyrae stars (37 fundamental-mode RRab, and 4 first-overtone RRc, pulsators) and 9 are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs). The average period of the RRab stars ( = 0.64 days) and the period-amplitude diagram place And~XXI in the class of Oosterhoff II - Oosterhoff-Intermediate objects. From the average luminosity of the RR Lyrae stars we derived the galaxy distance modulus of (m-M)0_0=24.40±0.1724.40\pm0.17 mag, which is smaller than previous literature estimates, although still consistent with them within 1 σ\sigma. The galaxy color-magnitude diagram shows evidence for the presence of three different stellar generations in And~XXI: 1) an old (∼\sim 12 Gyr) and metal poor ([Fe/H]=−-1.7 dex) component traced by the RR Lyrae stars; 2) a slightly younger (10-6 Gyr) and more metal rich ([Fe/H]=−-1.5 dex) component populating the red horizontal branch, and 3) a young age (∼\sim 1 Gyr) component with same metallicity, that produced the ACs.     Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown on Short-term Weight Loss in a Single Italian Institution

    Italy was the first European country to have a major outbreak of COVID-19. Bariatric procedures were stopped and telemedicine had to be implemented. A large percentage of patients struggled to follow postoperative diet and to start physical activity due to social restrictions. We have compared short-term outcomes of patients who had bariatric procedures prior to lockdown with subjects that had undergone obesity surgery in the same period of the previous year at our institution. A total number of 63 patients were included in this study. Weight loss at 1, 3 and 6 postoperative months in the 2019 group was significantly higher at any point of follow-up when compared to 2020. Social limitations and nonattendance of clinical appointments may have compromised early results. Graphical Abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

    Ten-Year Results of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: Retrospective Matched Comparison with Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding—Is There a Significant Difference in Long Term?

    Background: The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is the most common bariatric procedure performed worldwide while the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) has been almost abandoned. Aim of this study was to retrospectively assess 10-year outcomes of LSG through a matched comparison with LAGB. Materials and Methods: Retrospective search of prospectively maintained database of our university was carried out to find all patients that underwent LSG before December 2010. Each subject with LSG was matched one-to-one with a patient that had undergone LAGB in the same period with correspondent preoperative age, BMI, and sex. Results: A total of 76 patients underwent LSG before 2010 and were all included in this study; a matched group of 76 out of 178 LAGB patients with 10-year follow-up was retrieved from our database. Comparison between the two groups showed better outcomes after LSG at 1 and 5 years but weight loss was comparable with the LAGB group at 10 years (%TWL 22.2 ± 13 vs 21.2 ± 16.1; p = 0.89). No significant difference was found in conversion/removal rate (15.8% vs 18.4%; p = 0.67). Conclusion: LSG is an effective stand-alone bariatric procedure with better outcomes than LAGB in medium term, but results are comparable at 10 years. Subjects undergoing LSG should be informed that conversion to RYGB or OAGB may be necessary to achieve further weight loss or to treat reflux.     Pulsational Evidence for Mass Loss in NGC 1866 Cepheids

    Available observational data for the 20 known Cepheids in the LMC cluster NGC 1866 have been compared with Hubble Space Telescope observations, discovering in the cluster central region five additional variables, one of which appears to be a Cepheid candidate. We also reach the conclusion that only the photometric data for the seven variables in the cluster periphery appear accurate enough to allow a meaningful comparison with the results of pulsational theories. Out of these seven well-observed Cepheids, we find that the six probable cluster members are located in the color-magnitude diagram at the hot tip of the blue nose experienced by He-burning giants. Since evolutionary theory predicts for these giants an original mass on the order of 4 M⊙, we extend down to ~3 M⊙ the theoretical pulsational scenario already presented for M ≥ 5.0 M⊙. On this basis we discuss the four member Cepheids with VI magnitudes accurate enough to produce robust constraints on the pulsating structures. Among these variables, one finds evidence for a spread of masses by about 7%, with the structures following a tight mass-luminosity relation. Moreover, we show that periods and colors of the Cepheids give a robust indication of pulsator masses smaller than predicted by stellar evolution theory without mass loss, independently of the occurrence of core overshooting

    Clinical evaluation of creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase for monitoring muscle effort in working dogs in different simulated fieldworks

    The clinical profiles of muscle biomarkers (Creatine Kinase–CK-and Aspartate Aminotransferase–AST) performed during training may help in determining the fitness level of dogs and their potentiality to perform specific activities. This study investigated the potential variations of physiological parameters and muscular biomarkers in trained search and rescue dogs during search activity in two different areas. The aim was to verify the absence of any muscular enzymes after 20 min of search activity. The variations of physiological parameters (pulse rate; respiratory rate; rectal body temperature) and skeletal muscular biomarkers (CK and AST) were evaluated before and after search activity. Twenty-three trained dogs met the inclusion criteria and were divided into two groups. One group experienced search activity in a well-known area, while the second one in a similar, but unknown, area. The results for physiological parameters and skeletal muscular biomarkers values showed no significant differences between the two groups (p > 0.05), confirming that an effective conditioning protects against enzymatic alteration during a 20 min duration of submaximal activity

    Learning curve and global benchmark values of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: results of first 100 cases of a newly trained surgeon in an Italian center of excellence

    To evaluate whether the learning curve for sleeve gastrectomy could be completed after 50 cases. First 100 patients undergoing LSG under a newly trained laparoscopic surgeon were included in this study and divided into two groups of 50 consecutive patients each. Perioperative outcomes were compared to recently introduced global benchmarks. Short-term weight loss was calculated as Total Weight Loss Percent (%TWL) and complications were classified in accordance with the Clavien–Dindo classification. CUSUM analysis was performed for operative time and hospital stay. Mean preoperative age and BMI were 41.8 ± 10.3 years and 42.9 ± 5.4 kg/m2, respectively. Demographics and rate of patients with previous surgery were comparable preoperatively in the two groups. Mean operative time was 92.1 ± 19.3 min and hospital stay was 3.4 ± 0.6 days as per our standard protocol of discharge. Uneventful postoperative course was recorded in 93% of patients and only one case of staple line leak was registered in the first 50 cases (group 1). No statistical difference in BMI and %TWL was found between the two groups at any time of follow-up. Comparison between two groups showed a significant reduction in hospital stay and operative time after the first 50 LSGs (p < 0.05). LSG can be performed by newly trained surgeons proctored by senior tutors. At least 50 cases are needed to meet global benchmark cut-offs and few more cases may be required to reach the plateau of the learning curve
