Formation of a nickel hydroxide monolayer on Au through a self-assembled monolayer of 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid): voltammetric, SERS and XPS investigations of the modified electrodes

    Get PDF
The formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of 5,5'-dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoic acid), DNBA on gold has enabled further derivatization of the electrode surface with functional moieties anchored to the surface bound molecules. A SAM of DNBA was formed on the Au surface. Nickel ions tethered to the SAM-covered Au surface, were subsequently derivatized electrochemically to yield nickel hydroxide overlayers, thereby showing the possibility of preparing ultra-thin films of metal oxides through solution chemistry. The nickel hydroxide surface coverage obtained on bare and SAM-covered electrodes was estimated from voltammetric peaks and it varied from one monolayer to about 300 monolayers. The formation of a monolayer of nickel hydroxide has been achieved for the first time by electrochemical modification. Further, the modified electrodes were subjected to SERS and XPS studies to understand their surface characteristics. Modified electrodes provide a catalytic pathway involving nickel hydroxide for the electro-oxidation of glucose in alkaline solutions

Titanium, the 9th most abundant element on the earth's crust, is available mostly (90%)in the form of ilmenite (FeO.TiO2) and leucoxene (weathered ilmenite). These titanium bearing minerals occur either as placer minerals or some times, as rock deposits (e.g. in canada and Norway

Bounds and error control for eigenvalues

    Get PDF
Control and estimation of errors are important but difficult aspects of any analysis from which the numerical results are necessarily approximate. The order of difficulty is greater for local or distributed quantities like stresses and displacements than for global Of integrated parameter~ like eigenvalues and stiffnesses. To really bound a desired quantity between a pair of dose upper and lower bounds one should obtain either an oscillatory but clear convergence or, preferably, two rapidly converging sequences one from above and the other from below. Application of the two complementary variational principles of energy and complimentary energy, when both are possible to apply, do yield upper and lower bound approximations. But these or other alternate methods are generally expensive. On the other hand it would be advantageous if one basic procedure could be perturbed in a simple manner to provide both lower and upper bounds and to refine the solution and control the errors without undue effort. This paper discusses this concept and presents three powerful methods to closely bound any desired parameter in a problem. These are particularly valuable for eigenvalue problems

Radioactive isotopes reveal a non sluggish kinetics of grain boundary diffusion in high entropy alloys

High entropy alloys (HEAs) have emerged as a new class of multicomponent materials, which have potential for high temperature applications. Phase stability and creep deformation, two key selection criteria for high temperature materials, are predominantly influenced by the diffusion of constituent elements along the grain boundaries (GBs). For the first time, GB diffusion of Ni in chemically homogeneous CoCrFeNi and CoCrFeMnNi HEAs is measured by radiotracer analysis using the 63^{63}Ni isotope. Atom probe tomography confirmed the absence of elemental segregation at GBs that allowed reliable estimation of the GB width to be about 0.5 nm. Our GB diffusion measurements prove that a mere increase in number of constituent elements does not lower the diffusion rates in HEAs, but the nature of added constituents plays a more decisive role. The GB energies in both HEAs are estimated at about 0.8-0.9 J/m2^2, they are found to increase significantly with temperature and the effect is more pronounced for the CoCrFeMnNi alloy.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

Awareness, attitude and practice of contraception amongst post-partum women in a rural tertiary care hospital, Telangana, India

Background: India was the first country in the world to start the National Family Welfare Program in 1951. But population stabilization has been a difficult target to achieve and by the year 2028, our population is expected to surpass that of China. This study was conducted among puerperal women delivered at our hospital to know their awareness about various methods of contraception and willingness to practice any of these methods. Methods: This cross-sectional interview-based study was conducted in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Bhaskar Medical College and Hospital, Moinabad, Hyderabad from September 2015 to August 2016. The study sample were women who delivered in our hospital and a set questionnaire was used. Results: A total of 502 women in the post-partum period were included in the study.88.85% women were aware of any modern contraceptive. 30.85% of these women were aware of only the surgical method, i.e. sterilization; and another 58% women were aware of temporary methods also. Most of them knew about multiple methods, but tubectomy was the main method was known to the maximum (78%). As the literacy levels rose, awareness about temporary methods and male sterilization also increased. 70% of the study population were not aware of free availability of all these methods at Government hospitals and at our hospital.80.5% of these women were motivated after this study to accept a contraceptive method. Conclusions: There is a great unmet demand for contraception among rural women in India. Proper dissemination of the information about free availability of these methods by rural health workers, hospital staff and making these accessible in the peripheral areas of the country will help these couples. Providing oral, written and visual information to all the pregnant women at each ante-natal visit will be additional methods

A stony meteorite fell in the village Devgaon, Bastar district, Chattisgarh, Central India on 2001 February 12. The meteorite was fully covered with fusion crust and weighed about 12 kg. Chemical composition, cosmogenic nuclear tracks, radionuclides and noble gases have been studied to determine its classification, the preatmospheric size and the irradiation history
