    Ion composition and drift observations in the nighttime equatorial ionosphere

    The first in situ measurements of ion composition in the nighttime equatorial E and F region ionospheres (90-300 km) are presented and discussed. These profiles were obtained by two rocket-borne ion mass spectrometers launched from Thumba, India on March 9-10, 1970 at solar zenith angles of 112 deg and 165 deg. Ionosonde data established that the composition was measured at times bounding a period of F region downward drift. During this period the ions O(+) and N(+) were enhanced by one to three orders of magnitude between 220 and 300 km. Below the drift region (200 km), O(+) ceased to be the major ionic constituent, but the concentrations of O(+) and N(+) remained larger than predicted from known radiation sources and loss processes. Here also, both the O2(+) and NO(+) profiles retained nearly the same shape and magnitude throughout the night in agreement with theories assuming scattered UV radiation to be the maintaining source. Light metallic ions including Mg(+), Na(+) and possibly Si(+) were observed to altitude approaching 300 km, while the heavier ions Ca(+) and K(+) were seen in reduced quantity to 200 km.     I discuss Haldane's concept of generalised exclusion statistics (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 67}, 937, 1991) and I show that it leads to inconsistencies in the calculation of the particle distribution that maximizes the partition function. These inconsistencies appear when mutual exclusion statistics is manifested between different subspecies of particles in the system. In order to eliminate these inconsistencies, I introduce new mutual exclusion statistics parameters, which are proportional to the dimension of the Hilbert sub-space on which they act. These new definitions lead to properly defined particle distributions and thermodynamic properties. In another paper (arXiv:0710.0728) I show that fractional exclusion statistics manifested in general systems with interaction have these, physically consistent, statistics parameters.Comment: 8 page

    Exclusion statistics: A resolution of the problem of negative weights

    We give a formulation of the single particle occupation probabilities for a system of identical particles obeying fractional exclusion statistics of Haldane. We first derive a set of constraints using an exactly solvable model which describes an ideal exclusion statistics system and deduce the general counting rules for occupancy of states obeyed by these particles. We show that the problem of negative probabilities may be avoided with these new counting rules.Comment: REVTEX 3.0, 14 page

    Synthesis and Characterization of Eu, Tb doped Y2SiO5 Phosphors

    The structural and the optical properties of Terbium and Europium doped yttrium silicate phosphor particles were analyzed. The samples were prepared through solid state reaction method and investigated in a doping concentration of Tb(2%) and Eu(1.5%). The prepared phosphors are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM.FTIR and PL emission of Y2SiO5 phosphor doped with Tb(2%) and Eu(1.5%) was studied. The observed PL emission is at 380 nm followed by the emissions with good intensity at 487, 545, 586, 613 and 622nm. The present phosphor may be a good candidate for LED

    Modified Electromagnetic Actuator for Active Suspension System

    Active suspension is a type of suspension systems which can vary its damping value in order to adjust the spring firmness in accordance with the road conditions. Real Active Suspension incorporates an external actuator which helps in raising or lowering of vehicle chassis independently at each wheel. Generally, the actuators that are used for active suspension are Hydropneumatic, Electro-hydraulic or Electromagnetic actuators. A new concept of two-way electromagnetic actuation with the help of magnetic damping is proposed in this paper, which can extend its arm on both sides to facilitate active suspension mechanism in both humps and potholes. This increases the ride quality while maneuvering not only in humps, but also in dumps. It also describes about the comparison of spring materials, sophisticated design, construction and working principle of newly proposed actuator. Catia V5 software has been used to design and simulate the actuator model, different spring materials are analyzed and their shear stress and deflections are compared
