Nonlinear Rescaling of Control Laws with Application to Stabilization in the Presence of Magnitude Saturation
Motivated by some recent results on the stabilization of homogeneous systems, we present a gain-scheduling approach for the stabilization of non-linear systems. Given
a one-parameter family of stabilizing feedbacks and associated Lyapunov functions, we show how the parameter can be rescaled as a function of the state to give a new
stabilizing controller. In the case of homogeneous systems, we obtain generalizations of some existing results. We show that this approach can also be applied to nonhomogeneous
systems. In particular, the main application considered in this paper is to the problem of stabilization with magnitude limitations. For this problem, we develop a design method for single-input controllable systems with eigenvalues in the left closed plane
Research and Teacher Education: The BERA-RSA inquiry. Policy and Practice within the United Kingdom.
Across the four jurisdictions of the United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) initial teacher education (ITE) is under active development, with its content, location, control and quality often the focuses of sustained debate. Statutory and professional requirements for the sector inevitably reflect differing assumptions about teaching, teacher knowledge and governance. In exploring ITE across the four jurisdictions, this paper reviews policies and practices through two major focuses: first, the relationships between the declared teacher standards (competencies/competences) and research-informed teacher education provision; second, the ‘turn or (re)turn to the practical’ in teacher education, including policy declarations, changes in practices, and emphases and effects of the discourse(s) of relevance
Characterization of the CBC2 readout ASIC for the CMS strip-tracker high-luminosity upgrade
The CMS Binary Chip 2 (CBC2) is a full-scale prototype ASIC developed for the front-end readout of the high-luminosity upgrade of the CMS silicon strip tracker. The 254-channel, 130 nm CMOS ASIC is designed for the binary readout of double-layer modules, and features cluster-width discrimination and coincidence logic for detecting high-PT track candidates. The chip was delivered in January 2013 and has since been bump-bonded to a dual-chip hybrid and extensively tested. The CBC2 is fully functional and working to specification: we present the result of electrical characterization of the chip, including gain, noise, threshold scan and power consumption, together with the performance of the stub finding logic. Finally we will outline the plan for future developments towards the production version
Stochastic Gene Expression in Single Gene Oscillator Variants
It is infeasible to understand all dynamics in cell, but we can aim to understand the impact of design choices under our control. Here we consider a single gene oscillator as a case study to understand the influence of DNA copy number and repressor choice on the resulting dynamics. We first switch the repressor in the oscillator from the originally published lacI to treRL, a chimeric repressor with a lacI DNA binding domain that is inducible by trehalose. This slightly modified system produces faster and more regular oscillations than the original lacI oscillator. We then compare the treRL oscillator at three different DNA copy numbers. The period and amplitude of oscillations increases as the copy number is decreased. We cannot explain the change in period with differential equation models without changing delays or degradation rates. The correlation and phase coherence between daughter cells after cell division also tend to fall off faster for the lower copy oscillator variants. These results suggest that lower copy number variants of our single gene oscillator produce more synchronized oscillations
Twisted K-theory and K-theory of bundle gerbes
In this note we introduce the notion of bundle gerbe K-theory and investigate
the relation to twisted K-theory. We provide some examples. Possible
applications of bundle gerbe K-theory to the classification of D-brane charges

Excitable Patterns in Active Nematics
We analyze a model of mutually-propelled filaments suspended in a
two-dimensional solvent. The system undergoes a mean-field isotropic-nematic
transition for large enough filament concentrations and the nematic order
parameter is allowed to vary in space and time. We show that the interplay
between non-uniform nematic order, activity and flow results in spatially
modulated relaxation oscillations, similar to those seen in excitable media. In
this regime the dynamics consists of nearly stationary periods separated by
"bursts" of activity in which the system is elastically distorted and solvent
is pumped throughout. At even higher activity the dynamics becomes chaotic.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
