Intake ground vortex characteristics
The development of ground vortices when an intake operates in close proximity to the ground has been studied computationally for several configurations including front and rear quarter approaching flows as well as tailwind arrangements. The investigations have been conducted at model scale using a generic intake geometry. Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes calculations have been used and an initial validation of the computational model has been carried out against experimental data. The computational method has subsequently been applied to configurations that are difficult to test experimentally by including tailwind and rear quarter flows. The results, along with those from a previous compatible study of headwind and pure cross-wind configurations, have been used to assess the ground vortex behaviour under a broad range of velocity ratios and approaching wind angles. The characteristics provide insights on the influence of the size and strength of ground vortices on the overall quality of the flow ingested by the intake
CaII and NaI absorption signatures from the circumgalactic gas of the Milky Way
We combine CaII/NaI absorption and HI 21 cm emission line measurements to

Enhanced dust heating in the bulges of early-type spiral galaxies
Stellar density and bar strength should affect the temperatures of the cool (T ~ 20–30 K) dust component in the inner regions of galaxies, which implies that the ratio of temperatures in the circumnuclear regions to the disk should depend on Hubble type. We investigate the differences between cool dust temperatures in the central 3 kpc and disk of 13 nearby galaxies by fitting models to measurements between 70 and 500 μm. We attempt to quantify temperature trends in nearby disk galaxies, with archival data from Spitzer/MIPS and new observations with Herschel/SPIRE, which were acquired during the first phases of the Herschel observations for the KINGFISH (Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: a Far-Infrared Survey with Herschel) sample. We fit single-temperature modified blackbodies to far-infrared and submillimeter measurements of the central and disk regions of galaxies to determine the temperature of the component(s) emitting at those wavelengths. We present the ratio of central-region-to-disk-temperatures of the cool dust component of 13 nearby galaxies as a function of morphological type. We find a significant temperature gradient in the cool dust component in all galaxies, with a mean center-to-disk temperature ratio of 1.15 ± 0.03. The cool dust temperatures in the central ~3 kpc of nearby galaxies are 23 (±3)% hotter for morphological types earlier than Sc, and only 9 (±3)% hotter for later types. The temperature ratio is also correlated with bar strength, with only strongly barred galaxies having a ratio over 1.2. The strong radiation field in the high stellar density of a galactic bulge tends to heat the cool dust component to higher temperatures, at least in early-type spirals with relatively large bulges, especially when paired with a strong bar
Coherent phonon scattering effects on thermal transport in thin semiconductor nanowires
The thermal conductance by phonons of a quasi-one-dimensional solid with
isotope or defect scattering is studied using the Landauer formalism for
thermal transport. The conductance shows a crossover from localized to Ohmic
behavior, just as for electrons, but the nature of this crossover is modified
by delocalization of phonons at low frequency. A scalable numerical
transfer-matrix technique is developed and applied to model
quasi-one-dimensional systems in order to confirm simple analytic predictions.
We argue that existing thermal conductivity data on semiconductor nanowires,
showing an unexpected linear dependence, can be understood through a model that
combines incoherent surface scattering for short-wavelength phonons with nearly
ballistic long-wavelength phonons. It is also found that even when strong
phonon localization effects would be observed if defects are distributed
throughout the wire, localization effects are much weaker when defects are
localized at the boundary, as in current experiments.Comment: 13 page

Glucocorticoid receptor expression in 20 solid tumor types using immunohistochemistry assay.
BackgroundGlucocorticoid receptor (GR) activity plays a role in many aspects of human physiology and may play a crucial role in chemotherapy resistance in a wide variety of solid tumors. A novel immunohistochemistry (IHC) based assay has been previously developed and validated in order to assess GR immunoreactivity in triple-negative breast cancer. The current study investigates the standardized use of this validated assay to assess GR expression in a broad range of solid tumor malignancies.MethodsArchived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor bank samples (n=236) from 20 different solid tumor types were analyzed immunohistochemically. Nuclear staining was reported based on the H-score method using differential intensity scores (0, 1+, 2+, or 3+) with the percent stained (out of at least 100 carcinoma cells) recorded at each intensity.ResultsGR was expressed in all tumor types that had been evaluated. Renal cell carcinoma, sarcoma, cervical cancer, and melanoma were those with the highest mean H-scores, indicating high levels of GR expression. Colon, endometrial, and gastric cancers had lower GR staining percentages and intensities, resulting in the lowest mean H-scores.ConclusionA validated IHC assay revealed GR immunoreactivity in all solid tumor types studied and allowed for standardized comparison of reactivity among the different malignancies.ImpactBaseline expression levels of GR may be a useful biomarker when pharmaceutically targeting GR in research or clinical setting
The Físchlár digital video system: a digital library of broadcast TV programmes
Físchlár is a system for recording, indexing, browsing and playback of broadcast TV programmes which has been operational on our University campus for almost 18 months. In this paper we give a brief overview of how the system operates, how TV programmes are organised for browse/playback and a short report on the system usage by over 900 users in our University
High-resolution absorption spectroscopy of the circumgalactic medium of the Milky Way
In this article we discuss the importance of high-resolution absorption
spectroscopy for our understanding of the distribution and physical nature of
the gaseous circumgalactic medium (CGM) that surrounds the Milky Way.
Observational and theoretical studies indicate a high complexity of the gas
kinematics and an extreme multi-phase nature of the CGM in low-redshift
galaxies. High-precision absorption-line measurements of the Milky Way's gas
environment thus are essential to explore fundamental parameters of
circumgalactic gas in the local Universe, such as mass, chemical composition,
and spatial distribution. We shortly review important characteristics of the
Milky Way's CGM and discuss recent results from our multi-wavelength
observations of the Magellanic Stream. Finally, we discuss the potential of
studying the warm-hot phase of the Milky Way's CGM by searching for extremely
weak [FeX] l6374.5 and [FeIVX] l5302.9 absorption in optical QSO spectra.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Astronomical Notes
