    Mathematical modelling of contact lens moulding

    Compression moulded contact lenses are produced by placing fluid between two moulds and squeezing the fluid outwards to form the shape of the lens. A common problem seen in this process is that at times the fluid moves outwards asymmetrically, resulting in partially formed lenses. In this article, the system is modelled using the thin film equations and the results are analysed to find the optimal operating setup to reduce asymmetrical flow. A simple model with one curved surface and one flat surface is considered first. This assumption is verified by a more realistic model that investigates the effects of curvature on the dynamics of the fluid. The simple model is modified to include the effect of surface tension. The results of this model show that surface tension plays no role in the fluid dynamics for this particular fluid. A second modified model allows for lateral movement of the lower mould. The model shows that allowing the lower mould to slide hinders the symmetrical flow of the fluid

    Characterization and Evaluation of Lunar Regolith and Simulants

    A NASA-ESMD (National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Exploration Systems Mission Directorate) funded senior design project "Mineral Separation Technology for Lunar Regolith Simulant Production" is directed toward designing processes to produce Simulant materials as close to lunar regolith as possible. The eight undergraduate (junior and senior) students involved are taking a systems engineering design approach to identifying the most pressing concerns in simulant needs, then designing subsystems and processing strategies to meet these needs using terrestrial materials. This allows the students to, not only learn the systems engineering design process, but also, to make a significant contribution to an important NASA ESMD project. This paper will primarily be focused on the implementation aspect, particularly related to the systems engineering process, of this NASA EMSD senior design project. In addition comparison of the NASA ESMD group experience to the implementation of systems engineering practices into a group of existing design projects is given

    Context-Based Vision System for Place and Object Recognition

    While navigating in an environment, a vision system has to be able to recognize where it is and what the main objects in the scene are. In this paper we present a context-based vision system for place and object recognition. The goal is to identify familiar locations (e.g., office 610, conference room 941, Main Street), to categorize new environments (office, corridor, street) and to use that information to provide contextual priors for object recognition (e.g., table, chair, car, computer). We present a low-dimensional global image representation that provides relevant information for place recognition and categorization, and how such contextual information introduces strong priors that simplify object recognition. We have trained the system to recognize over 60 locations (indoors and outdoors) and to suggest the presence and locations of more than 20 different object types. The algorithm has been integrated into a mobile system that provides real-time feedback to the user
