    Error control on mobile station sides in collaborative multiple-input multiple-output systems

    Collaboration between mobile stations (MSs) may lead to a new form of wireless communication. Collaboration on MS sides considerably improves signal detection performance, especially for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission systems. In this study, a novel detector collaboration system is proposed to reduce the traffic volume on inter-MS collaboration links. Multiple MSs in the immediate vicinity are used to collaboratively decode the MIMO signals received from a base station. Furthermore, we consider a distributed detection system, in which multiple detection MSs decode the MIMO signals independently. Multiple decision results are exploited to improve the error performance. Residual interference coefficients were used to finalize the decision results. The error ratio performance and the traffic volume over collaboration wireless links were compared with those of two combining schemes through computer simulations and field experiments. The results revealed that the proposed error control scheme on mobile station sides offers a better tradeoff between the error performance and the traffic volume on the collaboration wireless links

    Searches for New Milky Way Satellites from the First Two Years of Data of the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey: Discovery of Cetus~III

    We present the results from a search for new Milky Way (MW) satellites from the first two years of data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) 300\sim 300~deg2^2 and report the discovery of a highly compelling ultra-faint dwarf galaxy candidate in Cetus. This is the second ultra-faint dwarf we have discovered after Virgo~I reported in our previous paper. This satellite, Cetus~III, has been identified as a statistically significant (10.7σ\sigma) spatial overdensity of star-like objects, which are selected from a relevant isochrone filter designed for a metal-poor and old stellar population. This stellar system is located at a heliocentric distance of 25111+24^{+24}_{-11}~kpc with a most likely absolute magnitude of MV=2.4±0.6M_V = -2.4 \pm 0.6~mag estimated from a Monte Carlo analysis. Cetus~III is extended with a half-light radius of rh=9017+42r_h = 90^{+42}_{-17}~pc, suggesting that this is a faint dwarf satellite in the MW located beyond the detection limit of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Further spectroscopic studies are needed to assess the nature of this stellar system. We also revisit and update the parameters for Virgo~I finding MV=0.330.87+0.75M_V = -0.33^{+0.75}_{-0.87}~mag and rh=4713+19r_h = 47^{+19}_{-13}~pc. Using simulations of Λ\Lambda-dominated cold dark matter models, we predict that we should find one or two new MW satellites from 300\sim 300~deg2^2 HSC-SSP data, in rough agreement with the discovery rate so far. The further survey and completion of HSC-SSP over 1,400\sim 1,400~deg2^2 will provide robust insights into the missing satellites problem.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ special issu

    A New Milky Way Satellite Discovered In The Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey

    We report the discovery of a new ultra-faint dwarf satellite companion of the Milky Way based on the early survey data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. This new satellite, Virgo I, which is located in the constellation of Virgo, has been identified as a statistically significant (5.5 sigma) spatial overdensity of star-like objects with a well-defined main sequence and red giant branch in their color-magnitude diagram. The significance of this overdensity increases to 10.8 sigma when the relevant isochrone filter is adopted for the search. Based on the distribution of the stars around the likely main sequence turn-off at r ~ 24 mag, the distance to Virgo I is estimated as 87 kpc, and its most likely absolute magnitude calculated from a Monte Carlo analysis is M_V = -0.8 +/- 0.9 mag. This stellar system has an extended spatial distribution with a half-light radius of 38 +12/-11 pc, which clearly distinguishes it from a globular cluster with comparable luminosity. Thus, Virgo I is one of the faintest dwarf satellites known and is located beyond the reach of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This demonstrates the power of this survey program to identify very faint dwarf satellites.     Upregulation of IGF-I in the goldfish retinal ganglion cells during the early stage of optic nerve regeneration

However, the reason why goldfish RGCs can regenerate after nerve injury is largely unknown at the molecular level. To investigate regenerative properties of goldfish RGCs, we divided the RGC regeneration process into two components: (1) RGC survival, and (2) axonal elongation processes. To characterize the RGC survival signaling pathway after optic nerve injury, we investigated cell survival/death signals such as Bcl-2 family members in the goldfish retina. Amounts of phospho-Akt (p-Akt) and phospho-Bad (p-Bad) in the goldfish retina rapidly increased four- to five-fold at the protein level by 3-5 days after nerve injury. Subsequently, Bcl-2 levels increased 1.7-fold, accompanied by a slight reduction in caspase-3 activity 10-20 days after injury. Furthermore, level of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), which activates the phosphatidyl inositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt system, increased 2-3 days earlier than that of p-Akt in the goldfish retina. The cellular localization of these molecular changes was limited to RGCs. IGF-I treatment significantly induced phosphorylation of Akt, and strikingly induced neurite outgrowth in the goldfish retina in vitro. On the contrary, addition of the PI3K inhibitor wortmannin, and IGF-I antibody inhibited Akt phosphorylation and neurite outgrowth in an explant culture. Thus, we demonstrated, for the first time, the signal cascade for early upregulation of IGF-I, leading to RGC survival and axonal regeneration in adult goldfish retinas through PI3K/Akt system after optic nerve injury. The present data strongly indicate that IGF-I is one of the most important molecules for controlling regeneration of RGCs after optic nerve injury. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Bo\"otes IV: A New Milky Way Satellite Discovered in the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey and Implications for the Missing Satellite Problem

    We report on the discovery of a new Milky Way (MW) satellite in Bo\"otes based on data from the on-going Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP). This satellite, named Bo\"otes IV, is the third ultra-faint dwarf that we have discovered in the HSC-SSP. We have identified a statistically significant (32.3σ\sigma) overdensity of stars having characteristics of a metal-poor, old stellar population. The distance to this stellar system is D=20918+20D_{\odot}=209^{+20}_{-18} kpc with a VV-band absolute magnitude of MV=4.530.21+0.23M_V=-4.53^{+0.23}_{-0.21} mag. Bo\"otes IV has a half-light radius of rh=46284+98r_h=462^{+98}_{-84} pc and an ellipticity of 0.640.05+0.050.64^{+0.05}_{-0.05}, which clearly suggests that this is a dwarf satellite galaxy. We also found another overdensity that appears to be a faint globular cluster with MV=0.200.83+0.59M_V=-0.20^{+0.59}_{-0.83} mag and rh=5.91.3+1.5r_h=5.9^{+1.5}_{-1.3} pc located at D=464+4D_{\odot}=46^{+4}_{-4} kpc. Adopting the recent prediction for the total population of satellites in a MW-sized halo by Newton et al. (2018), which combined the characteristics of the observed satellites by SDSS and DES with the subhalos obtained in Λ\LambdaCDM models, we estimate that there should be about two MW satellites at MV0M_V\le0 in the 676\sim676 deg2^2 covered by HSC-SSP, whereas that area includes six satellites. Thus, the observed number of satellites is larger than the theoretical prediction. On the face of it, we have a problem of too many satellites, instead of the well-known missing satellites problem whereby the Λ\LambdaCDM theory overpredicts the number of satellites in a MW-sized halo. This may imply that the models need more refinements for the assignment of subhalos to satellites such as considering those found by the current deeper survey.     Thermal Expansion and Magnetostriction of Heavy Fermion CeRu2Si2 at Millikelvin Temperatures

    金沢大学理工研究域数物科学系We have measured linear thermal expansion and magnetostriction of single crystal CeRu2Si2 that is well known as a heavy fermion metamagnetic compound. Thermal expansion and magnetostriction along the a-axis (B | a) and the c-axis (B | c) were measured by the capacitive dilatometer at temperatures down to 12 mK and in magnetic fields up to 9 T. We observed a strong anisotropy between a and c axis. In addition, negative deviations from Landau-Fermi liquid behavior for thermal expansion and magnetostriction coefficients were found below 50 mK and 0.4 T indicating non Fermi liquid behavior. © 2015 The Authors.     A Chemometrics-driven Strategy for the Bioactivity Evaluation of Complex Multicomponent Systems and the Effective Selection of Bioactivity-predictive Chemical Combinations

    Although understanding their chemical composition is vital for accurately predicting the bioactivity of multicomponent drugs, nutraceuticals, and foods, no analytical approach exists to easily predict the bioactivity of multicomponent systems from complex behaviors of multiple coexisting factors. We herein represent a metabolic profiling (MP) strategy for evaluating bioactivity in systems containing various small molecules. Composition profiles of diverse bioactive herbal samples from 21 green tea extract (GTE) panels were obtained by a high-throughput, non-targeted analytical procedure. This employed the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) technique, using 1,5-diaminonaphthalene (1,5-DAN) as the optical matrix for detecting GTE-derived components. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed differences among the GTEs in their antioxidant activity, oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). A reliable bioactivity-prediction model was constructed to predict the ORAC of diverse GTEs from their compositional balance. This chemometric procedure allowed the evaluation of GTE bioactivity by multicomponent rather than single-component information. The bioactivity could be easily evaluated by calculating the summed abundance of a few selected components that contributed most to constructing the prediction model. 1,5-DAN-MALDI-MS-MP, using diverse bioactive sample panels, represents a promising strategy for screening bioactivity-predictive multicomponent factors and selecting effective bioactivity-predictive chemical combinations for crude multicomponent systems

    Effect of soy protein on the muscle in human

    Background : In recent years, the number of bedridden people is rapidly increasing due to aging or lack of exercise in Japan. This problem is becoming more serious, since there is no countermeasure against it. In the present study, we designed to investigate whether dietary proteins, especially soy, had beneficial effects on skeletal muscle in 59 volunteers with various physical activities. Methods : We subjected 59 volunteers with various physical activities to meal intervention examination. Persons with low and high physical activities were divided into two dietary groups, the casein diet group and the soy diet group. They ate daily meals supplemented with 7.8 g of powdered casein or soy protein isolate every day for 30 days. Bedridden patients in hospitals were further divided into three dietary groups : the no supplementation diet group, the casein diet group and the soy diet group. They were also subjected to a blood test, a urinalysis, magnetic resonance imaging analysis and muscle strength test of the knee before and after the meal intervention study. Results : Thirty-day soy protein supplementation significantly increased skeletal muscle volume in participants with low physical activity, compared with 30-day casein protein supplementation. Both casein and soy protein supplementation increased the volume of quadriceps femoris muscle in bedridden patients. Consistently, soy protein significantly increased their extension power of the knee, compared with casein protein. Although casein protein increased skeletal muscle volume more than soy protein in bedridden patients, their muscle strength changes by soy protein supplementation were bigger than those by casein protein supplementation.
