The problem of finding an ideal material for filling root canals of deciduous teeth has not been solved yet. This fact led to the development of an experiment to histologically analyze the periapical tissue reaction to 3 root canal filling materials. Eighty root canals of dog deciduous anterior teeth from 6 animals, 60 days old, were used in this study. After biomechanical preparation, the root canals were filled with the following materials: slowly resorbable Maisto paste, Sealer 26 with iodoform, L&C paste (calcium hydroxide with olive oil) and as a control group, canals that were prepared but not filled. At thirty days after the treatment the animals were killed and the teeth prepared for histological analysis. The materials were ranked statistically from the best to the worst as follows: a - Maisto paste, b - Sealer 26 with iodoform, c - control group, d - L&C paste. There was significant difference (p = 0.01) only when the results of the other groups were compared with the L&C paste group. It was also observed that L&C paste was not biologically compatible and that the other materials were biocompatible but their resorption was not at the same rate as that of the deciduous teeth roots.O objetivo de encontrar um material ideal para obturar canais radiculares de dentes decíduos ainda não foi alcançado.
Os resultados com os 2 cimentos estudados foram semelhantes entre si e piores (ñThe subject of this paper was to conduct an in vitro study of the coronal leakage after root canal filling and post space preparation. One hundred single-rooted human teeth had their crowns removed and the canals prepared and filled by the lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha points and the sealers CRCS and Endofill (a Grossman cement). After post space preparation, the remainder of the filling was protected or not with 1mm of a plug of the following materials: Coltosol, Super Bonder (cyanoacrylate-ester), CRCS and Endofill. After 24 hours in saline, the specimens were immersed in a 2% methylene blue solution in a vacuum environment for 24 hours. The teeth were then sectioned longitudinally, leakage was evaluated linearly and the obtained data were submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results with the two sealers studied were similar between themselves and worse (
Evaluation of tissue response to periodontal dressings: histological study in tooth sockets of rats
Although the use of periodontal dressings is currently limited, there are some indications for their use. Selection of any material that will have direct contact with live tissues, such as periodontal dressings, should be careful in order to allow surgical wound healing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intensity of inflammatory response and bone formation in tooth sockets of rats after implantation of three periodontal dressings. After removal of the right maxillary incisors of 84 male rats, each tooth socket received implantation of a polyethylene tube, 63 of which were filled with non-eugenol periodontal dressing and the remaining 21 tubes remained empty (control group). Histological evaluation assessed the intensity of inflammatory response and presence and location of bone tissue formation at postoperative periods of 7, 14 and 28 days. Statistical analysis was performed by the Kruskal-Wallis test at 5% significance level. Regarding the inflammatory infiltrate, at 28 days, there was statistically significant difference between one of periodontal dressings and control group (
The problem of finding an ideal material for filling root canals of deciduous teeth was not solved until now.
The deciduous teeth with open apex are susceptible to be traumatized by carious lesions or other offence type that can engage the pulp vitality of those teeth. The lacking of specific work on the subject, as well as the importance of solving this kind of problem appropriately stimulates the accomplishment of investigations on the subject. Therefore, the subject of this study was to evaluate, histologically, the behavior of apical tissues of deciduous dogs teeth with open apex, after biopulpectomy and root canal filling with calcium hydroxide in different vehicles. The root canals of 80 deciduous teeth, from 6 dogs of the same hatch, with 50 days of age, and with open apex, were used in this study. After the biomechanical preparation, the root canals were filled with the following materials: Vitapex - calcium hydroxide added to iodoform and silicon oil; paste of calcium hydroxide with iodoform and saline; paste of calcium hydroxide with lipiodol, and as control group, teeth with root canal prepared but not filled. Thirty days after the treatment, the animals were killed and the specimens were prepared for histomorphological analysis. The statistical analysis of the results allowed the studied materials to be ordered from the best to the worst in the following way: a) calcium hydroxide added to iodoform and saline, b) Vitapex - calcium hydroxide added to iodoform and silicon oil, c) calcium hydroxide added to Lipiodol, d) control. It was observed statistical significant difference (p=0.05) among the results of the groups of calcium hydroxide associated to iodoform and saline with the calcium hydroxide group associated to lipiodol, as well as the 3 groups filled with calcium hydroxide pastes with the control group (p=0.001). It was concluded that the 3 pastes of calcium hydroxide studied can be used as root canal filling material in the treatment of deciduous teeth with open apex.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP
Apical leakage after root canal filling with an experimental calcium hydroxide gutta-percha point
This study was an in vitro analysis of the apical seal of root canals filled with an experimental calcium hydroxide gutta-percha point. One hundred and ten recently extracted human permanent teeth with a single root were used. The root canals were biomechanically prepared, and some received a dressing of calcium hydroxide for 7 days. Root canals not dressed were filled by the lateral condensation technique with either regular gutta-percha or calcium hydroxide gutta-percha points. The dressed root canals were filled with the same sealers and regular gutta-percha points. The specimens were placed into a 2% methylene blue dye solution under vacuum, and the apical leakage was linearly evaluated. The experimental groups with calcium hydroxide dressing and the one with calcium hydroxide gutta-percha points exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) less leakage than the groups filled with regular gutta-percha points. The results obtained indicated that calcium hydroxide guttapercha points produced an improvement in the apical sealing quality of the root canal filling. Data from 1,813 records were analyzed, yielding 1,165 records suitable for review. Some type of local and/or systemic manifestation during primary tooth eruption was reported for 95% (1,129) children studied. The predominant manifestation was gingival irritation (85%), while the least frequent symptom (26%) was a runny nose
Periapical tissue healing after post space preparation with or without use of a protection plug and root canal exposure to the oral environment. Study in dogs
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of coronal leakage on the healing of dogs' periapical tissues after root canal filling, post space preparation and protection or not with a temporary sealer plug. Forty root canals of dogs' teeth were instrumented and filled by the lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha points and Endomethasone or CRCS sealers. After post space preparation, the remaining filling material was protected or not with a plug of temporary Coltosol sealer and exposed to the oral environment for 90 days. Thereafter, the animals were sacrificed and the specimens were removed and prepared for histomorphological and histobacteriological analysis. The findings revealed 35% of microbial leakage in the groups without plugs and 15% of leakage in the groups with plugs. Statistical analysis showed that the use of a Coltosol plug improved significantly the histomorphological results regardless of the type of root canal sealer (p=0.05) and that CRCS and Endomethasone sealers showed similar results (p>0.05)
