Colored Jones polynomials with polynomial growth

The volume conjecture and its generalizations say that the colored Jones polynomial corresponding to the N-dimensional irreducible representation of sl(2;C) of a (hyperbolic) knot evaluated at exp(c/N) grows exponentially with respect to N if one fixes a complex number c near 2*Pi*I. On the other hand if the absolute value of c is small enough, it converges to the inverse of the Alexander polynomial evaluated at exp(c). In this paper we study cases where it grows polynomially.Comment: 17 pages, to appear in Commun. Contemp. Mat

Odontogenic deep neck space infection in a patient with hyper-IgE syndrome : a case report

Hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome is a primary immunodeficiency state that is characterized by eczema, recurrent skin and lung infections, and markedly increased levels of IgE. Odontogenic infection can spread to vital and deep structures in such immunocompromised patients. We report a case of a 19-year-old man with hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome presenting deep neck space infection that had spread from periapical periodontitis of the lower molars. A computed tomography scan showed an area of bony destruction in the left mandible and abscess formation in the submandibular and submental spaces. The patient was successfully treated by cervical drainage, extraction of the causative teeth, and antibiotic therapy. The present case highlights the importance of adequate treatment of dental infections in immunocompromised patients

Zerumbone Exhibits Anti-Inflammatory Functions via HSF1

Zerumbone is a sesquiterpene present in Zinger zerumbet. Many studies have demonstrated its marked anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenesis activities. Recently, we showed that zerumbone binds to numerous proteins with scant selectivity and induces the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) in hepatocytes. To dampen proteo-toxic stress, organisms have a stress-responsive molecular machinery, known as heat shock response. Heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) plays a key role in this protein quality control system by promoting activation of HSPs. In this study, we investigated whether zerumbone-induced HSF1 activation contributes to its anti-inflammatory functions in stimulated macrophages. Our findings showed that zerumbone increased cellular protein aggregates and promoted nuclear translocation of HSF1 for HSP expression. Interestingly, HSF1 down-regulation attenuated the suppressive effects of zerumbone on mRNA and protein expressions of pro-inflammatory genes, including inducible nitric oxide synthase and interlukin-1β. These results suggest that proteo-stress induced by zerumbone activates HSF1 for exhibiting its anti-inflammatory functions

Spin-torque efficiency enhanced by Rashba spin splitting in three dimensions

We examine a spin torque induced by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in three dimensions within the Boltzmann transport theory. We analytically calculate the spin torque and show how its behavior is related with the spin topology in the Fermi surfaces by studying the Fermi-energy dependence of the spin torque. Moreover we discuss the spin-torque efficiency which is the spin torque divided by the applied electric current in association with the current-induced magnetization reversal. It is found that high spin-torque efficiency is achieved when the Fermi energy lies on only the lower band and there exists an optimal value for the Rashba parameter, where the spin-torque efficiency becomes maximum.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
