A high bandwidth quantum repeater
We present a physical- and link-level design for the creation of entangled
pairs to be used in quantum repeater applications where one can control the
noise level of the initially distributed pairs. The system can tune
dynamically, trading initial fidelity for success probability, from high
fidelity pairs (F=0.98 or above) to moderate fidelity pairs. The same physical
resources that create the long-distance entanglement are used to implement the
local gates required for entanglement purification and swapping, creating a
homogeneous repeater architecture. Optimizing the noise properties of the
initially distributed pairs significantly improves the rate of generating
long-distance Bell pairs. Finally, we discuss the performance trade-off between
spatial and temporal resources.Comment: 5 page
Giant optical Faraday rotation induced by a single electron spin in a quantum dot: Applications to entangling remote spins via a single photon
We propose a quantum non-demolition method - giant Faraday rotation - to
detect a single electron spin in a quantum dot inside a microcavity where
negatively-charged exciton strongly couples to the cavity mode. Left- and
right-circularly polarized light reflected from the cavity feels different
phase shifts due to cavity quantum electrodynamics and the optical spin
selection rule. This yields giant and tunable Faraday rotation which can be
easily detected experimentally. Based on this spin-detection technique, a
scalable scheme to create an arbitrary amount of entanglement between two or
more remote spins via a single photon is proposed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Improved ESP-index: a practical self-index for highly repetitive texts
While several self-indexes for highly repetitive texts exist, developing a
practical self-index applicable to real world repetitive texts remains a
challenge. ESP-index is a grammar-based self-index on the notion of
edit-sensitive parsing (ESP), an efficient parsing algorithm that guarantees
upper bounds of parsing discrepancies between different appearances of the same
subtexts in a text. Although ESP-index performs efficient top-down searches of
query texts, it has a serious issue on binary searches for finding appearances
of variables for a query text, which resulted in slowing down the query
searches. We present an improved ESP-index (ESP-index-I) by leveraging the idea
behind succinct data structures for large alphabets. While ESP-index-I keeps
the same types of efficiencies as ESP-index about the top-down searches, it
avoid the binary searches using fast rank/select operations. We experimentally
test ESP-index-I on the ability to search query texts and extract subtexts from
real world repetitive texts on a large-scale, and we show that ESP-index-I
performs better that other possible approaches.Comment: This is the full version of a proceeding accepted to the 11th

Quantum Computation by Communication
We present a new approach to scalable quantum computing--a ``qubus
computer''--which realises qubit measurement and quantum gates through
interacting qubits with a quantum communication bus mode. The qubits could be
``static'' matter qubits or ``flying'' optical qubits, but the scheme we focus
on here is particularly suited to matter qubits. There is no requirement for
direct interaction between the qubits. Universal two-qubit quantum gates may be
effected by schemes which involve measurement of the bus mode, or by schemes
where the bus disentangles automatically and no measurement is needed. In
effect, the approach integrates together qubit degrees of freedom for
computation with quantum continuous variables for communication and
interaction.Comment: final published versio
Qudit Quantum State Tomography
Recently quantum tomography has been proposed as a fundamental tool for
prototyping a few qubit quantum device. It allows the complete reconstruction
of the state produced from a given input into the device. From this
reconstructed density matrix, relevant quantum information quantities such as
the degree of entanglement and entropy can be calculated. Generally orthogonal
measurements have been discussed for this tomographic reconstruction. In this
paper, we extend the tomographic reconstruction technique to two new regimes.
First we show how non-orthogonal measurement allow the reconstruction of the
state of the system provided the measurements span the Hilbert space. We then
detail how quantum state tomography can be performed for multi qudits with a
specific example illustrating how to achieve this in one and two qutrit
systems.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR

Single photon quantum non-demolition in the presence of inhomogeneous broadening
Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been often proposed for
generating nonlinear optical effects at the single photon level; in particular,
as a means to effect a quantum non-demolition measurement of a single photon
field. Previous treatments have usually considered homogeneously broadened
samples, but realisations in any medium will have to contend with inhomogeneous
broadening. Here we reappraise an earlier scheme [Munro \textit{et al.} Phys.
Rev. A \textbf{71}, 033819 (2005)] with respect to inhomogeneities and show an
alternative mode of operation that is preferred in an inhomogeneous
environment. We further show the implications of these results on a potential
implementation in diamond containing nitrogen-vacancy colour centres. Our
modelling shows that single mode waveguide structures of length in single-crystal diamond containing a dilute ensemble of NV
of only 200 centres are sufficient for quantum non-demolition measurements
using EIT-based weak nonlinear interactions.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures (some in colour) at low resolution for arXiv

Schrodinger cats and their power for quantum information processing
We outline a toolbox comprised of passive optical elements, single photon
detection and superpositions of coherent states (Schrodinger cat states). Such
a toolbox is a powerful collection of primitives for quantum information
processing tasks. We illustrate its use by outlining a proposal for universal
quantum computation. We utilize this toolbox for quantum metrology
applications, for instance weak force measurements and precise phase
estimation. We show in both these cases that a sensitivity at the Heisenberg
limit is achievable.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; Submitted to a Special Issue of J. Opt. B on

Normal, Abby Normal, Prefix Normal
A prefix normal word is a binary word with the property that no substring has
more 1s than the prefix of the same length. This class of words is important in
the context of binary jumbled pattern matching. In this paper we present
results about the number of prefix normal words of length , showing
that for some and
. We introduce efficient
algorithms for testing the prefix normal property and a "mechanical algorithm"
for computing prefix normal forms. We also include games which can be played
with prefix normal words. In these games Alice wishes to stay normal but Bob
wants to drive her "abnormal" -- we discuss which parameter settings allow
Alice to succeed.Comment: Accepted at FUN '1
