    Regional Moment Tensors of the 2009 L'Aquila Earthquake Sequence

    Broadband waveform inversion of ground velocities in the 0.02 0.10 Hz frequency band is successfully applied to 181 earthquakes with ML ≥ 3 of the April, 2009, L'Aquila, Italy, earthquake sequence. This was made possible by the development of a new regional crustal velocity model constrained by deep crustal profiles, surfacewave dispersion and teleseismic Pwave receiver functions and tested through waveform fit. Although all earthquakes exhibit normal faulting, with the fault plane dipping southwest at about 55º for the majority of events, a subset of events had much shallower dips. The issue of confidence in the derived parameters was investigated by applying the same inversion procedure by two groups who subjectively selected different traces for inversion. The unexpected difficulty in modeling the regional broadband waveforms of the mainshock as a point source was investigated through an extensive finitefault modeling of broadband velocity and accelerometer data, which placed the location of major moment release updip and about 47 seconds after the initial firstarrival hypocentral parameters

    La conoscenza delle diverse forme di urbanizzazione e della tipologia insediativa è un elemento fondamentale della sostenibilità e della resilienza urbana. I processi di diffusione, dispersione urbana e di frammentazione continuano a produrre un effetto di “città diffusa” con conseguente perdita di limiti tra territorio urbano e rurale (Indovina, 1990, 2009; Simon, 2008). Il consumo di risorse e la sottrazione di qualità al territorio si presenta attraverso la creazione di centri urbani di dimensione medio-piccola all’esterno dei principali poli metropolitani, la crescita di zone di margine con insediamenti dispersi intorno ai centri, la saldatura di zone di insediamento a bassa densità in un continuum che annulla i limiti tra territorio urbano e rurale, la frammentazione del paesaggio e la mancanza di identità dei nuclei urbanizzati sparsi e senza coesione. Gli effetti ambientali e sociali dei fenomeni di espansione delle città a bassa densità e dello sprawl urbano sono rilevanti in termini di qualità ambientale, di integrità del paesaggio e di consumo di risorse naturali. L’entità di tali effetti dipende fortemente dalla modalità con la quale si realizza la trasformazione. In Europa e in Italia, l’espansione delle superfici impermeabilizzate, si manifesta nella frangia urbana e peri-urbana di molte importanti città come commistione di tipologie di uso del suolo diversificate e come aumento più marcato del consumo di suolo proprio nelle aree di margine e nei paesaggi suburbani (EEA, 2006; ISPRA, 2015). A questi fenomeni di espansione diffusa si associano, inoltre, costi pubblici e privati associati alla mobilità e alla fornitura e alla gestione delle opere di urbanizzazione primaria e secondaria. La frammentazione produce, infine, una forte riduzione della qualità della biodiversità complessiva nelle aree interessate, sia in termini di capacità residua di connessione degli ecosistemi sia di disponibilità dei servizi ecosistemici nelle unità territoriali.The knowledge of the different forms of urbanization and type of settlements are key element of sustainability and urban resilience. The processes of diffusion, urban sprawl and fragmentation continue to produce a consequent loss of boundaries between urban and rural land (Guess, 1990, 2009; Simon, 2008). Consumption of natural resources and threatening of land quality take place through the creation of small-medium sized urban centers outside of the major metropolitan, through the growth of dispersed settlements in marginal areas around the centers, through low-density settlement in a continuum that cancels the boundaries between urban and rural land, through landscape fragmentation and the lack of identity of the settlements scattered and without cohesion. The environmental and social effects of those phenomena are relevant in terms of environmental quality, integrity of the landscape and the consumption of natural resources. The magnitude of these effects depends strongly on how transformation is realized. In Europe and in Italy, the majority of expansion of the sealed areas is in urban and peri-urban fringe of many major cities, as a mixture of different types of land use, driving to the greater increase in the land take in this fringe areas and suburban landscapes (EEA, 2006; ISPRA, 2015). Is known that dispersed and fragmented urbanization is associated with widespread expansion of public and private costs associated with mobility and costs of primary and secondary urbanization. Fragmentation produces, finally, a strong reduction in the quality of the overall biodiversity, in terms of residual capacity of connection of ecosystems and the availability of ecosystem services in the territorial units

    Land degradation assessment for sustainable soil management

    Desertification is a complex phenomenon defined as the extreme degree of land degradation induced by human activities and climatic conditions. Climate change is accelerating and widening these areas. Previews analysis and studies assessed the vulnerability to desertification in Italy at national and regional level through a methodological approach based on integrating climate, soil, vege-tation, and socio-economic data (ESA). The studies carried out by ISPRA aim to provide an update of the of land degradation assessment in Italy, based on Trends.Earth methodology and of the three UN-SDGs sub-indicators on Target 15.3.1 (land use/land cover, land productivity and soil organic carbon above and below ground status and trends), together with additional dimensions of land degradation considered crucial for national land characters. Final assessment of the percentage of degraded land is around 36% of national area. This exercise demonstrates the importance to con-sider a larger number of data and include information on other fac-tors, such as climate, physical, chemical data. This integrated approach to the assessment of land degradation will allow to describe also of the loss of related ecosystem services

Il Rapporto sul consumo di suolo in Italia 2015 integra nuove informazioni, aggiorna le precedenti stime sulla base di dati a maggiore risoluzione e completa il quadro nazionale con specifici indicatori per regioni, province e comuni. Sono, inoltre, approfonditi alcuni aspetti che caratterizzano le dinamiche di espansione urbana e di trasformazione del paesaggio a scala nazionale e locale con riferimento alla fascia costiera, alle aree montane, ai corpi idrici, alle aree protette, alle aree a pericolosità idraulica, all’uso del suolo, alle forme e alle densità di urbanizzazione, ai fenomeni dello sprawl urbano, della frammentazione, della dispersione e della diffusione insediativa

    Protocol for a collaborative meta-analysis of 5-HTTLPR, stress, and depression

    Background: Debate is ongoing about what role, if any, variation in the serotonin transporter linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) plays in depression. Some studies report an interaction between 5-HTTLPR variation and stressful life events affecting the risk for depression, others report a main effect of 5-HTTLPR variation on depression, while others find no evidence for either a main or interaction effect. Meta-analyses of multiple studies have also reached differing conclusions.Methods/Design: To improve understanding of the combined roles of 5-HTTLPR variation and stress in the development of depression, we are conducting a meta-analysis of multiple independent datasets. This coordinated approach utilizes new analyses performed with centrally-developed, standardized scripts. This publication documents the protocol for this collaborative, consortium-based meta-analysis of 5-HTTLPR variation, stress, and depression.Study eligibility criteria: Our goal is to invite all datasets, published or unpublished, with 5-HTTLPR genotype and assessments of stress and depression for at least 300 subjects. This inclusive approach is to minimize potential impact from publication bias.Data sources: This project currently includes investigators from 35 independent groups, providing data on at least N = 33,761 participants.  The analytic plan was determined prior to starting data analysis. Analyses of individual study datasets will be performed by the investigators who collected the data using centrally-developed standardized analysis scripts to ensure a consistent analytical approach across sites. The consortium as a group will review and interpret the meta-analysis results.Discussion: Variation in 5-HTTLPR is hypothesized to moderate the response to stress on depression. To test specific hypotheses about the role of 5-HTTLPR variation on depression, we will perform coordinated meta-analyses of de novo results obtained from all available data, using variables and analyses determined a priori. Primary analyses, based on the original 2003 report by Caspi and colleagues of a GxE interaction will be supplemented by secondary analyses to help interpret and clarify issues ranging from the mechanism of effect to heterogeneity among the contributing studies. Publication of this protocol serves to protect this project from biased reporting and to improve the ability of readers to interpret the results of this specific meta-analysis upon its completion

    Genetic Determinants of Financial Risk Taking

    Individuals vary in their willingness to take financial risks. Here we show that variants of two genes that regulate dopamine and serotonin neurotransmission and have been previously linked to emotional behavior, anxiety and addiction (5-HTTLPR and DRD4) are significant determinants of risk taking in investment decisions. We find that the 5-HTTLPR s/s allele carriers take 28% less risk than those carrying the s/l or l/l alleles of the gene. DRD4 7-repeat allele carriers take 25% more risk than individuals without the 7-repeat allele. These findings contribute to the emerging literature on the genetic determinants of economic behavior

    Schizophrenia-associated HapICE haplotype is associated with increased NRG1 type III expression and high nucleotide diversity

    Excitement and controversy have followed neuregulin (NRG1) since its discovery as a putative schizophrenia susceptibility gene; however, the mechanism of action of the associated risk haplotype (HapICE) has not been identified, and specific genetic variations, which may increase risk to schizophrenia have remained elusive. Using a postmortem brain cohort from 37 schizophrenia cases and 37 controls, we resequenced upstream of the type I–IV promoters, and the HapICE repeat regions in intron 1. Relative abundance of seven NRG1 mRNA transcripts in the prefrontal cortex were determined and compared across diagnostic and genotypic groups. We identified 26 novel DNA variants and showed an increased novel variant load in cases compared with controls (χ2=7.815; P=0.05). The average nucleotide diversity (θ=10.0 × 10−4) was approximately twofold higher than that previously reported for BDNF, indicating that NRG1 may be particularly prone to genetic change. A greater nucleotide diversity was observed in the HapICE linkage disequilibrium block in schizophrenia cases (θ(case)=13.2 × 10−4; θ(control)=10.0 × 10−4). The specific HapICE risk haplotype was associated with increased type III mRNA (F=3.76, P=0.028), which in turn, was correlated with an earlier age of onset (r=−0.343, P=0.038). We found a novel intronic five-SNP haplotype ∼730 kb upstream of the type I promoter and determined that this region functions as transcriptional enhancer that is suppressed by SRY. We propose that the HapICE risk haplotype increases expression of the most brain-abundant form of NRG1, which in turn, elicits an earlier clinical presentation, thus providing a novel mechanism through which this genetic association may increase risk of schizophrenia

    The influence of psychiatric screening in healthy populations selection: a new study and meta-analysis of functional 5-HTTLPR and rs25531 polymorphisms and anxiety-related personality traits

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A genetic liability for anxiety-related personality traits in healthy subjects has been associated with the functional serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism (5-HTTLPR), although the data are somewhat conflicting. Moreover, only one study has investigated the functional significance of the 5-HTTLPR/rs25531 haplotypes in relation to anxiety traits in healthy subjects. We tested whether the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and the 5-HTTLPR/rs25531 haplotypes are linked to Harm Avoidance (HA) using an association study (STUDY I) and a meta-analytic approach (STUDY II).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>STUDY I: A total of 287 unrelated Italian volunteers were screened for DSM-IV Axis I disorders and genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR and rs25531 (A/G) polymorphisms. Different functional haplotype combinations were also analyzed. STUDY II: A total of 44 studies were chosen for a meta-analysis of the putative association between 5-HTTLPR and anxiety-related personality traits.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>STUDY I: In the whole sample of 287 volunteers, we found that the SS genotype and S'S' haplotypes were associated with higher scores on HA. However, because the screening assessed by Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) showed the presence of 55 volunteers affected by depression or anxiety disorders, we analyzed the two groups ("disordered" and "healthy") separately. The data obtained did indeed confirm that in the "healthy" group, the significant effects of the SS genotype and S'S' haplotypes were lost, but they remained in the "disordered" group. STUDY II: The results of the 5-HTTLPR meta-analysis with anxiety-related traits in the whole sample confirmed the association of the SS genotype with higher anxiety-related traits scores in Caucasoids; however, when we analyzed only those studies that used structured psychiatric screening, no association was found.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study demonstrates the relevance to perform analyses on personality traits only in DSM-IV axis I disorder-free subjects. Furthermore, we did not find an association between functional serotonin transporter gene polymorphisms and anxiety traits in healthy subjects screened through a structured psychiatric interview.</p

    Relationship between smoking and obesity:a cross-sectional study of 499,504 middle-aged adults in the UK general population

    Background: There is a general perception that smoking protects against weight gain and this may influence commencement and continuation of smoking, especially among young women.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using baseline data from UK Biobank. Logistic regression analyses were used to explore the association between smoking and obesity; defined as body mass index (BMI) &gt;30kg/m2. Smoking was examined in terms of smoking status, amount smoked, duration of smoking and time since quitting and we adjusted for the potential confounding effects of age, sex, socioeconomic deprivation, physical activity, alcohol consumption, hypertension and diabetes.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Results: The study comprised 499,504 adults aged 31 to 69 years. Overall, current smokers were less likely to be obese than never smokers (adjusted OR 0.83 95% CI 0.81-0.86). However, there was no significant association in the youngest sub-group (≤40 years). Former smokers were more likely to be obese than both current smokers (adjusted OR 1.33 95% CI 1.30-1.37) and never smokers (adjusted OR 1.14 95% CI 1.12-1.15). Among smokers, the risk of obesity increased with the amount smoked and former heavy smokers were more likely to be obese than former light smokers (adjusted OR 1.60, 95% 1.56-1.64, p&lt;0.001). Risk of obesity fell with time from quitting. After 30 years, former smokers still had higher risk of obesity than current smokers but the same risk as never smokers.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Conclusion: Beliefs that smoking protects against obesity may be over-simplistic; especially among younger and heavier smokers. Quitting smoking may be associated with temporary weight gain. Therefore, smoking cessation interventions should include weight management support.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt

    Neuroticism-related personality traits are related to symptom severity in patients with premenstrual dysphoric disorder and to the serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphism 5-HTTPLPR

    Neuroticism has been linked to a functional polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR), with short-allele carriers being overrepresented among high-scorers on neuroticism. Studies evaluating neuroticism-related personality traits in relation to the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism among patients with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and are lacking. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between PMDD and neuroticism-related personality traits, and secondly, to relate the personality trait scores of PMDD patients to experienced symptom severity and to the 5-HTTLPR short allele. Thirty PMDD patients and 55 asymptomatic healthy controls were included in the study. The Swedish Universities Scale of Personality was used to evaluate personality traits. Genotype analyses were available in 27 PMDD patients and 18 healthy controls. Women with PMDD displayed higher levels of neuroticism-related personality traits (psychic trait anxiety, somatic trait anxiety, embitterment, stress susceptibility and mistrust) than healthy controls, and these effects were most prominent in women with more severe luteal phase symptoms. Furthermore, PMDD patients with at least one copy of the short allele of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism scored higher on psychic trait anxiety and lack of assertiveness than PMDD patients who were homozygous for the long allele. PMDD patients who suffer from more severe luteal phase symptoms also display increased scores of neuroticism-related personality traits in comparison with healthy controls. Within the group of PMDD patients, differences in certain personality trait scores are associated with the short allele of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism
