    Strong Coupling of a Cavity QED Architecture for a Current-biased Flux Qubit

    We propose a scheme for a cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) architecture for a current-biased superconducting flux qubit with three Josephson junctions. The qubit operation is performed by using a bias current coming from the current mode of the circuit resonator. If the phase differences of junctions are to be coupled with the bias current, the Josephson junctions should be arranged in an asymmetric way in the qubit loop. Our QED scheme provides a strong coupling between the flux qubit and the transmission line resonator of the circuit.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    A self-learning rule base for command following in dynamical systems

    In this paper, a self-learning Rule Base for command following in dynamical systems is presented. The learning is accomplished though reinforcement learning using an associative memory called SAM. The main advantage of SAM is that it is a function approximator with explicit storage of training samples. A learning algorithm patterned after the dynamic programming is proposed. Two artificially created, unstable dynamical systems are used for testing, and the Rule Base was used to generate a feedback control to improve the command following ability of the otherwise uncontrolled systems. The numerical results are very encouraging. The controlled systems exhibit a more stable behavior and a better capability to follow reference commands. The rules resulting from the reinforcement learning are explicitly stored and they can be modified or augmented by human experts. Due to overlapping storage scheme of SAM, the stored rules are similar to fuzzy rules

    Marketing 'development' in the neoliberal university: A critical insight into UK Higher Education Institutions

    UK higher education institutions (HEIs) are in competition with each other and HEIs across the globe for fee-paying students within a higher education model that promotes neoliberal values of individualism and competition in a global free market. This creates the conditions for the neoliberal university to actively market itself and its products in an international marketplace of potential students. We analyse three dominate frames employed by universities to do this: brand recognition, a discourse on the creation of global workers, and an emphasis on a degree as a product that is bought and sold. Current literature on marketing and HEIs focuses on how marketing works with the university as the unit of analysis, whereas the contribution of this paper is to advance critical insight into university marketing practices at the level of a specific discipline – development studies - with the intention to deepen our understanding of the effects of marketing practices on the discipline. That is, we ask in marketing development programmes what precisely is sold? Thus, we critically examine representations of ‘development’ within the development industry and explore the marketing of ‘development’ as a neoliberal product that it is conceptualised and sold by northern development actors to primarily northern audiences. We identify five key ideas of ‘development’ that are sold to northern publics: ‘development’ as a positive association for an individual, a commodity, an act of global citizenship, an exercise in northern nation branding and taking a broader perspective, ‘development’ as an overly simplistic, racist and misogynist trope. Bringing together these two distinct literatures, we present a conceptual framework to lead deeper enquiry into what is sold and how when marketing ‘development’ in the neoliberal university. Through this paper we aim to draw attention to the potential for contestation that can emerge between ethical and considerate representations of ‘development’ and the effective marketing of development studies programmes to fee-paying students

    Phase diagram for a Bose-Einstein condensate moving in an optical lattice

    The stability of superfluid currents in a system of ultracold bosons was studied using a moving optical lattice. Superfluid currents in a very weak lattice become unstable when their momentum exceeds 0.5 recoil momentum. Superfluidity vanishes already for zero momentum as the lattice deep reaches the Mott insulator(MI) phase transition. We study the phase diagram for the disappearance of superfluidity as a function of momentum and lattice depth between these two limits. Our phase boundary extrapolates to the critical lattice depth for the superfluid-to-MI transition with 2% precision. When a one-dimensional gas was loaded into a moving optical lattice a sudden broadening of the transition between stable and unstable phases was observed.Comment: 4 figure

    Video games as meaningful entertainment experiences

    We conducted an experiment to examine individuals’ perceptions of enjoyable and meaningful video games and the game characteristics and dimensions of need satisfaction associated with enjoyment and appreciation. Participants (N = 512) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups that asked them to recall a game that they found either particularly fun or particularly meaningful, and to then rate their perceptions of the game that they recalled. Enjoyment was high for both groups, though appreciation was higher in the meaningful- than fun-game condition. Further, enjoyment was most strongly associated with gameplay characteristics and satisfaction of needs related to competency and autonomy, whereas appreciation was most strongly associated with story characteristics and satisfaction of needs related to insight and relatedness

    Continuous and Pulsed Quantum Zeno Effect

    Continuous and pulsed quantum Zeno effects were observed using a 87^{87}Rb Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC). Oscillations between two ground hyperfine states of a magnetically trapped condensate, externally driven at a transition rate ωR\omega_R, were suppressed by destructively measuring the population in one of the states with resonant light. The suppression of the transition rate in the two level system was quantified for pulsed measurements with a time interval δt\delta t between pulses and continuous measurements with a scattering rate γ\gamma. We observe that the continuous measurements exhibit the same suppression in the transition rate as the pulsed measurements when γδt=3.60(0.43)\gamma\delta t=3.60(0.43), in agreement with the predicted value of 4. Increasing the measurement rate suppressed the transition rate down to 0.005ωR0.005\omega_R.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
