    "Aggregation Bias" DOES explain the PPP puzzle

    This article summarizes our views on the role of an "aggregation bias" in explaining the PPP Puzzle, in response to the several papers recently written in reaction to our initial contribution. We discuss in particular the criticisms of Imbs, Mumtaz, Ravn and Rey (2002) presented in Chen and Engel (2005). We show that their contentions are based on: (i) analytical counter-examples which are not empirically relevant; (ii) simulation results minimizing the extent of "aggregation bias"; (iii) unfounded claims on the impact of measurement errors on our results; and (iv) problematic implementation of small-sample bias corrections. We conclude, as in our original paper, that "aggregation bias" goes a long way towards explaining the PPP puzzle

    The Impact of Uncertainty Shocks under Measurement Error: A Proxy SVAR approach

    A growing literature considers the impact of uncertainty using SVAR models that include proxies for uncertainty shocks as endogenous variables. In this paper we consider the impact of measurement error in these proxies on the estimated impulse responses. We show via a Monte-Carlo experiment that measurement error can result in attenuation bias in impulse responses. In contrast, the proxy SVAR that uses the uncertainty shock proxy as an instrument does not su¤er from this bias. Applying this latter method to the Bloom (2009) data-set results in impulse responses to uncertainty shocks that are larger in magnitude and more persistent than those obtained from a recursive SVAR

    This article identifies shocks to the Federal Reserve's inflation target as vector autoregression innovations that make the largest contribution to future movements in long-horizon inflation expectations. The effectiveness of this scheme is documented via Monte-Carlo experiments. The estimated impulse responses indicate that a positive shock to the target is associated with a large increase in inflation and long-term interest rates in the United States. Target shocks are estimated to be a vital factor behind the increase in inflation during the pre-1980 period and are an important driver of the decline in long-term interest rates over the last two decades

    A simple and accurate approach to solve the power flow for balanced islanded microgrids

    Power flow studies are very important in the planning or expansion of power system. With the integration of distributed generation (DG), micro-grids are becoming attractive. So, it is important to study the power flow of micro-grids. In grid connected mode, the power flow of the system can be solved in a conventional manner. In islanded mode, the conventional method (like Gauss Seidel) cannot be applied to solve power flow analysis. Hence some modifications are required to implement the conventional Gauss Seidel method to islanded micro-grids. This paper proposes a Modified Gauss Seidel (MGS) method, which is an extension of the conventional Gauss Seidel (GS) method. The proposed method is simple, easy to implement and accurate in solving the power flow analysis for islanded microgrids. The MGS algorithm is implemented on a 6 bus test system. The results are compared against the simulations results obtained from PSCAD/EMTDC which proves the accuracy of the proposed MGS algorithm

    The study of power flow analysis for microgrids has gained importance where several methods have been proposed to solve these problems. However, these schemes are complic ated and not easy to implement due to the absence of a slack bus as well as the dependence of the power on frequency as a result of the droop characteristics. This paper proposes simple and e ffec- tive modifications to the conventional method (Newton Raphs on) to compute the power flow for microgrids. The presented metho d provides a simple, easy to implement, and accurate approach to solve the power flow equations for microgrids. The propose d method is applied to two test systems: a 6-bus system and a 38- bus system. The results are compared against simulation result s from PSCAD/EMTDC which validate the effectiveness of the develo ped method. The phenotypic frequency of blood group B is observed highest (33.06) percent, O (31.04), A (27.02) and AB is lowest (08.33) percent. The phenotypic frequency of Rh negative is (04.26) percent. TheKunbis (Maratha) population shows close genetic relationship with the Gujratis

    Does uncertainty affect real activity? Evidence from state-level data

    We use variation in the effect of US-wide or global uncertainty on state-level uncertainty to identify the impact of this shock on real activity. We find that increases in uncertainty do have an adverse impact on real income, employment and unemployment. Thus, uncertainty shocks can be a source of economic fluctuations
