    Coverage of completion of four ANC visits based on recommended time schedule in Northern Ethiopia: A community-based cross-sectional study design.

    BACKGROUND:Despite decades of implementation of maternal health care programs, the uptake of antenatal care services based on the recommended gestational age continues to be below the national and regional targets. Thus, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors related to the completion of four antenatal care visits among mothers who gave birth 6 months preceding the study. METHOD:We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative component included administering a pre-tested structured questionnaire to 466 mothers who gave birth 6 months preceding the study using a simple random sampling technique from respective Tabias. The quantitative result was analyzed using SPSS version 22. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was done to determine the association between independent and dependent variables. Variables were declared as statistically significant at P ≤ 0.05 in multivariable logistic regression model. The qualitative interview data were collected from eight mothers and four key informants recruited through purposive sampling method. RESULTS:The overall prevalence of completion of four ANC visits based on the recommended time schedule was 9.9% (95% CI, 7.1-12.4). However, 63.9% of the participants attended four visits or more regardless of the recommended time schedule. Being member of community health insurance (AOR 2.140, 95% CI, 1.032-4.436), walking on foot less than or equal one hour to reach the health facility (AOR 3.921, 95% CI, 1.915-8.031), having workload at home (AOR 0.369, 95% CI, 0.182-0.751), and husband supported during antenatal care (AOR 2.561, 95% CI, 1.252-5.240) were independently associated with the completion of four ANC visits based on the recommended time schedule in multivariable analysis. CONCLUSION:The completion of four ANC contacts based on the recommended time schedule remains low in rural areas of Northern Ethiopia. Being a member of community health insurance, distance to the health facility, workload, and male involvement were associated with the completion of four ANC visits based on the recommended time schedule. The existing health system should consider improving the recommended ANC visits by integrating Community based interventions

    Wind Energy Data Analysis and Resource Mapping of Geba Catchment, North Ethiopia

    Wind energy potential in Ethiopia is estimated to be enormous due to local peculiar landscape situations. However, the country started to utilize the potential only very recently. One of the reasons for low utilization of wind energy in Ethiopia is the absence of reliable and accurate wind energy resource data. Development of reliable and accurate wind atlas helps to identify candidate sites for wind energy applications and facilitates the planning and implementation of wind energy projects. This paper presents wind energy data analysis and wind atlas of Geba catchment in North Ethiopia. The work reported in this paper is based on wind data collected over a period of one year from measuring masts in six different sites in Tigray, Ethiopia. The data was analyzed using various statistical software to evaluate the wind energy potential of the area. Average wind speed and power density, distribution of the wind prevailing direction, turbulence intensity and wind shear profile of each site were determined. Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Programme (WAsP) was used to generate the wind atlas of the area and to develop the wind speed and power density maps. The data analysis indicates that the average wind speed at 10 m above ground level (a.g.l.) varies from 3.7 m/s to 6.64 m/s. The mean power density at 10 m a.g.l varies from 64 W/m2 to 301 W/m2. The prevailing wind directions are East and South East directions. The wind resource map developed by WAsP at 50 m indicated that the catchment has good wind power potential having mean wind speed and power density of 6.5 m/s and 288 W/m2, respectively.status: publishe

The global shift towards renewable energy is manifested in developing countries such as Ethiopia primarily because of continuous economic growth in the last two decades and secondly due to the vast untapped potential resources. In addition to other factors, the lack of accurate data of the resources has, however, hampered the development of solar energy technologies. The aim of this paper is to investigate the resource estimation by undertaking direct measurements at selected sites in the Northern part of Ethiopia. This paper presents an assessment of the solar energy resource based on the primary data collected between January 2011 and December 2012. The daily and monthly average global solar radiation is analyzed based on the 10 minute interval measurement retrieved from the data loggers. From the analysis it is seen that the measured values give a better accuracy and distribution of the global solar radiation than earlier Fig.s that were based on satellite images and model calculations.     Erectile dysfunction and its associated factors among the male population in Adigrat Town, Tigrai Region, Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

    BackgroundErectile dysfunction is one of the common sexual dysfunctions, but it is generally misunderstood as it is not a condition that threatens life. It affects an individual's physical as well as psychosocial health and has a significant impact on sufferers and their families' quality of life. No data are suggesting the prevalence of erectile dysfunction at the population level in Ethiopia. This research aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of erectile dysfunction among the male population.MethodsWe employed a community based cross-sectional study among 802 study participants. A two-stage random sampling method was used for enrolling study participants. Including the International Index of Erectile Function Questionnaire-5 (IIEF-5) for erectile dysfunction, data were collected using pretested and a structured questionnaire administered by an interviewer. Binary logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with erectile dysfunction.ResultOut of the total of 802 individuals, 25.4%(95% CI:(22.4, 28.3%)) (n = 204) reported erectile dysfunction. The mean age of the participants was 34.3 ± 9.6 years. Age of 40years and above [AOR = 10.74, 95% CI: (7.07, 16.35)], physical inactivity [AOR = 3.62, 95% CI: (2.40, 5.45)], depression [AOR = 4.01, 95% CI: (2.22, 7.21)], poor quality of life [AOR = 1.59, 95% CI: (1.07, 2.36)] were significantly associated with erectile dysfunction.ConclusionsIn this study, the prevalence of erectile dysfunction was high. Therefore, it is recommended that erectile dysfunction treatment be integrated into the health care system that focuses on educating and inspiring people on healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior enhancing wellbeing
